1. Pregnancy Blood Test
A pregnancy blood test is the best way to determine if a
woman is pregnant. This is the test that physicians use
to test a woman for pregnancy. The blood test is to
determine hormone levels of human chorionic
gonadotropin or HCG. This hormone is produced only
during pregnancy. Trace amounts may be found in the
blood stream briefly during ovulation however those
amounts quickly decrease and are usually undetectable.
Levels of the hormone HCG are detectable as soon as
11 days after conception. A pregnancy blood test can
confirm whether a woman is pregnant based on the level
of the hormone HCG that is detected. The hormone
level increases upon conception and will continue to
increase by as much as 50% over a period of six days.
The levels of HCG will continue to increase for several
weeks.

Levels of HCG as determined by a pregnancy blood test
can be a complicated issue. The test can be used to
confirm a pregnancy however it is not the sole measure
used to determine a healthy pregnancy. HCG levels in
women can vary drastically. While physicians do look
for an approximate median level for confirmation of a
positive pregnancy this level cannot necessarily be used
2. as a measure for determining health of the pregnancy.
Other tests must be performed in addition to the HCG
test to indicate complications within the pregnancy.
A blood test is one of the best means for determining
pregnancy however it is not the best measure to
determine gestation. Again, HCG hormone levels vary
drastically from women to women therefore it is
difficult to determine gestation based on this measure.
There are two types of HCG tests that could potentially
be used. The first is a qualitative test which will detect if
there are elevated levels of HCG present in the blood
stream. The qualitative test will not register a particular
level it simply confirms that elevated levels are present.
The quantitative test detects the amount of HCG levels
in the bloodstream. The quantitative test is the more
accurate of the two and is therefore used frequently to
determine pregnancy. There are urine tests that can
detect HCG levels in the body as well, these too can be
a great indicator of pregnancy. Out of the many tests
available on the market the most accurate is the
pregnancy blood test that can yield quantitative results.
