3. How common is pms? According to rough estimates 80% of women experience premenstrual symptoms. 40-50% of the above mentioned, experience mild symptoms. 20-35% of them experience moderate to severe intensity of symptoms. 2-5% experience extremely severe intensity or PMDD (premensturaldysphoric disorder) www.mindmantra.in
4. What causes Pms? There are various theories about the reason for PMS to occur. Most theories suggest it to happen due to interaction between hormones responsible for keeping reproductive organs healthy namely the sex hormones and chemicals secreted by the brain to keep other body functions healthy namely neurochemicals. www.mindmantra.in
5. What are the symptoms? A lady in PMS experiences disturbances in one or more areas of emotional, behavioral, physical and sexual health. 6. Psychological symptoms These are one or more of the following: Bouts of anger and irritability. Higher than normal levels of fear, stress and anxiety. 7. Physical symptoms These are one or more of the following: Fatigue, bloating (due to fluid retention), weight gain, breast tenderness, acne, sleep disturbances as in either sleeping too much or too little appetite changes with overeating or excess food cravings. www.mindmantra.in
8. How to diagnose pms? A lady can be diagnosed with PMS if: The psychological and physical symptoms reoccur periodically over months. The symptoms happen during the same time period within every menstrual cycle. The intensity can fluctuate from cycle to cycle. The symptoms disappear with the onset of menstrual flow. 9. What is the treatment? The treatment is based on the intensity of symptoms experienced. In cases with Mild to moderate intensity of symptoms – natural methods is advocated.
