• What is BACnet?
  • An ASHRAE Building Automation and Control

3-Challenges: Maintaining The Integrity of Life Safety Systems

 • The data structures for the standard protocols are
   similar
 • However, their implementations are quite different
 • So, gateways between any two of the standard
   protocols tend to be complex

• Stable and reliable communication is one
  precondition for system integration
• Protocols and functions must be exactly
  described if successful performance and
  integration is to take place
• Integration can only be successful, when
  standard protocols are implemented

Editor's Notes

  1. The Intelligent Building Institute has proposed: "an intelligent building is one that provides a productive and cost-effective environment through optimization of its four basic elements - structure, systems, services and management - and the interrelationships between them. Intelligent buildings help business owners, property managers and occupants to realize their goals in the areas of cost, comfort, convenience, safety, long-term flexibility and marketability." Such definitions lead inexorably to a more all-encompassing meaning - overall performance, not only of the building itself, but also of the entire construction process. This concept is best expressed in the mission statement for the uniformat.com site on the World Wide Web: "to improve building investment performance by applying ASTM E1557-96 'Standard Classification of Building Elements and Related Sitework - UNIFORMAT II.' This classification enables a seamless link of all phases of a building life cycle - from facilities development through facilities management." 2. Slide 15 – picture of project site The building industry is approaching a migration phase where the need for scalable, interoperable, flexible and open systems is spurring participants from different building technology industries to collaborate on a single platform. This will allow them to build systems, which can ultimately propel growth in intelligent building (IB) concepts. This transition demands technological developments with the ability to curtail the prominence of proprietary solutions that give an impression of being open systems when they are not. As the technologies in the building industry are more business driven than research oriented, they are likely to benefit from technological advancements taking place in other areas also. Overall, a building's degree of intelligence is likely to depend on the extent to which there is a consensus to include various available technologies. Hence, building technologies are set for further growth with embedded intelligence leading to excellent comfort levels, state-of-the-art security, optimized operational costs, and exceptional smartness.
  3. Stable and reliable communication is one precondition for system integration. Protocols and functions must be exactly described if successful performance and integration is to take place. In the case of multi vendor systems integration, the right contracts, mutual coordination and agreed upon responsibility is indispensable. Nevertheless, there are practical limits to implementation: The fusion of different concepts is difficult and demands considerable investment of time and energy. This is hardly justifiable for a single application! The delimitation of responsibility at the interfaces and uncoordinated alterations in the subsystems represent almost intolerable complications for integration. To overcome these limits the industry agreed on communication standards, which describe the basic functions in the disciplines of HVAC, lighting, safety, etc. These basic functions defined as objects can then be exchanged by different services, disciplines or management systems easily and with a minimum of effort via communication networks, routers, gateways etc. Integration will only be really successful, however, when standard protocols are implemented internally within the individual systems. This eliminates complex conversion and, above all, too much loss of functionality. The standardization of engineering data and the engineering and commissioning workflow in the future will further help to lower costs and to increase the reliability and functionality of integrated systems! Typical applications in a building: air, water, lighting and sun-blinds, heating, cooling, ventilation, energy distribution, safety and security, refrigeration, transportation and ancillary systems
