‘TYPE FACE’ PROJECT
How will my work be marked?
AO1  Develop: studying work by other artists or
designers
AO2  Refine: doing experiments to find out what
works best for your ideas
AO3  Recording: making sketchbook drawings,
notes, photographs and presentations
AO4  Present: offering a final outcome
Brief: Type Face
You are a freelance designer and Beaumont School have
asked you to create some large scale Art work to represent
Beaumont students. The criteria are that it should be a
portrait and include text.
Portraiture is one of the most common themes throughout
Art history and typography is key to Graphic Design. This
assignment will help you combine these two themes and
develop your skills, gain knowledge and understanding of
the constraints of a wide variety of media and build on
previous techniques learnt.
You will use a range of materials to investigate your ideas
and will incorporate techniques from art history. You will
use yourself and friends as a starting point on each task.
You will be asked to link your work to an artist’s and
designer’s work, responding to their work and analysing
their artistic style. This research will form the basis of all
your final pieces.
Texture, colour, shape, form and scale are all important
formal elements you will be studying. Your sketchbook will
be used to record all investigations and processes you learn.

Design Brief
Create your own Brief

Task One

Use the outline below to help you write your own Brief…

I have been hired by Beaumont School as a freelance designer to create
exciting, original Art work that reinvents the idea of the portrait using
typography. My Art must represent Beaumont students and combine text
and image.

Throughout this assignment I will use a range of materials to investigate
several themes of portraiture, incorporating techniques from art history and
using myself as a starting point on each task.
I will link my work to artists and designers responding to their work and
analysing their artistic style. This research will help and inspire me to produce
my final outcomes.
Texture, colour, shape, form and scale are all important formal elements I
will be studying. I will use my  sketchbook  to record my investigations and
processes throughout this assignment.
Task Two

Artist/Designer Research

Create an Artist research
board on an Artist or Designer
that incorporates text and
image. Your board must be
well presented and include:
good quality images, facts and
opinions using the ‘How to
write about Artists’ sheet and
a well presented transcription

Anatol Knotek
Gui Borchert

Sergio Albiac
Nick Gentry

Deadline: Wednesday 15th January 2014
Portrait photographs

Task Three
Take at least 20 portrait photographs.
These could be of you or or your school
friends (so they represent Beaumont
School). Some could be expressive, you
could take close up images, interesting
angles etc. These should be printed to
mount on an A1 board and printed as
thumb nails for your sketchbook

Task Four

Photoshop Type Face

You are going to explore basic
techniques which you can use on
Photoshop to create a series of portrait
images that incorporate type.
What to do …

1.Open up Photoshop CS5
(this is under the Art folder)
2. Create a contact sheet (thumbnails)
of all your portrait images and print
this A4 size. Choose one or two of your
favourite images.
Open a ‘New’ document. Make the
width 210 mm and the height 297 mm
(resolution 72 pixels/inch)
Go to ‘File’ ‘Automate’ ‘Contact Sheet’
3. Open a ‘New’ document. Make the width 210 mm
and the height 297 mm (resolution 72 pixels/inch)
4. On this document type
words that represent you. For
example. friends, football,
pizza, graphics… (save this
document)

5. Open up your portrait image.
Use the crop tool like this
and write in the measurements
width 210 mm and height 297mm
(resolution 72 pixels/inch) and
click crop.. (save this document)
6. Drag the portrait image on
top of your text document.
Move the image so it fits
exactly over the text.

7. On the right hand tool bar
change the ‘Fill’ percentage so
the text shows through under
your portrait image.
8. If you want to have more
text on your image you can
duplicate your text layer as
shown above
9. Once you are happy with
your image go to ‘Layer’ then
‘Flatten Image’ and save your
document

10. To up the contrast of your
image go to ‘image’ then
‘Brightness/Contrast’
11. To cut out your portrait so
you have a plain background
you can either use the rubber
tool or the lasso tool

12. You are now ready to
experiment and create some
final ‘Type Face’ images.
Explore some of the filter
effects (tool bar needed shown
above)
Cutout

Film Grain
Poster edges

Note Paper
Graphic pen (contrast added)
Neon Glow (Hue adjust on second image)
Photoshop: what to complete and deadlines
1.A Photoshop title page and a page of thumbnail photographs
-circle the one or two you have chosen and explain why you have
chosen this image(s)
2. At least two double pages showing the processes you have
explored on Photoshop. This should include your original image,
your original text and lots of screen shots of the different steps
your have taken on Photoshop.
3. Images that haven’t worked stuck in. Write why they don’t
work. Your final prints printed (minimum of 3) and stuck in your
sketchbook with your opinions written below.
4. Your final pieces printed (minimum of 3) on photo paper and
mounted either A3 or A4 size (Miss May will mount these for you)
Deadlines
-Photoshop title page, thumb nail photographs page and
one double page on the Photoshop process:
Wednesday 22nd January 2014
-All Photoshop work completed: Friday 31st January 2014

Yr 10 gcse graphics type face

  • 2. How will my work be marked? AO1  Develop: studying work by other artists or designers AO2  Refine: doing experiments to find out what works best for your ideas AO3  Recording: making sketchbook drawings, notes, photographs and presentations AO4  Present: offering a final outcome
  • 3. Brief: Type Face You are a freelance designer and Beaumont School have asked you to create some large scale Art work to represent Beaumont students. The criteria are that it should be a portrait and include text. Portraiture is one of the most common themes throughout Art history and typography is key to Graphic Design. This assignment will help you combine these two themes and develop your skills, gain knowledge and understanding of the constraints of a wide variety of media and build on previous techniques learnt. You will use a range of materials to investigate your ideas and will incorporate techniques from art history. You will use yourself and friends as a starting point on each task. You will be asked to link your work to an artist’s and designer’s work, responding to their work and analysing their artistic style. This research will form the basis of all your final pieces. Texture, colour, shape, form and scale are all important formal elements you will be studying. Your sketchbook will be used to record all investigations and processes you learn. Design Brief
  • 4. Create your own Brief Task One Use the outline below to help you write your own Brief…   I have been hired by Beaumont School as a freelance designer to create  exciting, original Art work that reinvents the idea of the portrait using  typography. My Art must represent Beaumont students and combine text  and image. Throughout this assignment I will use a range of materials to investigate  several themes of portraiture, incorporating techniques from art history and  using myself as a starting point on each task. I will link my work to artists and designers responding to their work and  analysing their artistic style. This research will help and inspire me to produce  my final outcomes. Texture, colour, shape, form and scale are all important formal elements I  will be studying. I will use my  sketchbook  to record my investigations and  processes throughout this assignment.

Choose one or two of your favourite images. Open a ‘New’ document. Make the width 210 mm and the height 297 mm (resolution 72 pixels/inch) Go to ‘File’ ‘Automate’ ‘Contact Sheet’
  • 8. 3. Open a ‘New’ document. Make the width 210 mm and the height 297 mm (resolution 72 pixels/inch)
  • 9. 4. On this document type words that represent you. For example. friends, football, pizza, graphics… (save this document) 5. Open up your portrait image. Use the crop tool like this and write in the measurements width 210 mm and height 297mm (resolution 72 pixels/inch) and click crop.. (save this document)
  • 10. 6. Drag the portrait image on top of your text document. Move the image so it fits exactly over the text. 7. On the right hand tool bar change the ‘Fill’ percentage so the text shows through under your portrait image.
