Forrester’s The Sorry State of Digital Transformation in 2018 reports that in 37% of companies, CIOs lead digital transformation projects, the largest cohort out of the C-Suite. Why is such an important process in the evolution of the company still in the hands of the CIO alone, when it is clearly a critical component of the broader business strategy and its success? The modern digital era now demands that technology leaders become product owners and business executives understand how technology can be a key driver of how the business operates, delivers and grows. It’s within that tight integration that the transformative magic of digital can happen and add value back to the business and its customers. Agile methodologies are transforming not only the way we work, but also what is expected of us as researchers. At BeyondCurious, we think that’s a good thing. In our experience, agile, iterative user experience research is the best way of conducting ux/usability research. Why? It ensures that you’re making things that matter. Agile Research delivers rapid results to internal and client teams in as little as one week, allowing for quick pivots to align prototypes to user needs. This flexible, modular approach reduces client risk because it allows teams to test and learn. The research process iteratively informs development, and concrete, ongoing results enable rapid evolution, and ensure that you are making the best product for your end user. Another benefit of Agile Research is that client and internal design/dev partners are part of the research team: there is no black box. This integrated team co-develops areas of inquiry, prototypes, and key questions. Agile research sprints do not produce dust-attracting research tomes. Instead, reports answer key questions, propelling product development forward with clear and targeted opportunities and recommendations. These sprints also quickly uncover additional questions that could be answered with future research to help move projects forward. Sounds good, right? But how do you do it? How do you plan it? We see it moving away from arts and craft into a methodology of delivering value. Adapting to this shift, designers and changemakers are forming a new way of design thinking. As designer, not only are we crafting products / services, but we are also learning to see a much bigger system with a deep connection to business factors. How can we influence businesses with design thinking in order to build a solid business platform that delivers meaningful products / services. Systems thinking is an approach to problem solving. Businesses are an intricate ecosystem, from how the organisation is structured, to people, to commercial planning, to processes. As designers, we practice systems thinking everyday. How do we use this knowledge to craft a business? This, is business design. In this session, we want to explore what business design means. How to use what we know, as designers, to build stronger businesses? As we continue to adapt design methodologies and systems thinking to a business context, what other manifestations that will evolve? How can design thinking be leveraged in even the most straight-laced silos of a business such as Human Resources and Finance? How do we give design thinking the space it needs in the face of traditional business practice? And most importantly, how do we use our existing design thinking knowledge, to design businesses?

But releasing the potential of games and gaming for learning means knowing about trends in game designs, cultures, and genres, in the context of both educational games and commercial games, to better understand how they meet the pedagogical, curriculum, and individual needs of learners. D'Elia talks about alternate reality games (ARGs), interactive social games that transcend media and tell stories using multiple platforms. Players dive down the rabbit hole to interact with fictional characters, solve problems with other players, and, ultimately, unravel the mystery. Immersive ARGs have been described as “chaotic fiction,” but what if there is a method to all of this madness?
