HVUT – An Introduction
• HVUT stands for "Heavy Vehicle Use Tax" and it is the tax that heavy
(over 55,000 lbs) highway, farming, and logging vehicles pay to the IRS
on an annual basis using Form 2290.
• The HVUT tax due depends on the amount of miles, the weight of the
vehicle, and the months it was in use throughout the year.
• The HVUT is always due starting July 1 and by August 31, unless
there are weekends or holidays.

How to Get Schedule1
•After a Form 2290 is Filed with the IRS, the taxpayer will receive a
Stamped Schedule 1.
•This serves as proof that the Form 2290 was filed for the Heavy
Vehicle Use Tax.
•In the past, when paper filing was the norm, the IRS would physically
stamp the Schedule 1 to prove that the return was officially filed and
paid.
•Now that e-filing has become the preferred method of filing, the IRS
will provide an E-File watermark on the Schedule 1.

Form 2290 Taxable Vehicles
•Taxable vehicles are those heavy vehicles that are over 55,000 lbs
and go over 5,000 miles annually.
•These vehicles are fully taxable and will have their taxes determined
by weight and their first use month.
•Taxable vehicles can be regular trucks or logging vehicles, given that
they meet their respective requirements.

Due Date
• Although the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is an annual tax, the IRS form
2290 must also be filed after the first month the vehicle is placed in
service.
• The due date for each month is the last day of the following month.
• This means that any heavy vehicle operating on public roads must file
the IRS Form 2290 by the traditional deadline (Aug 31), and also the
month after it is first used.
• The Form 2290 Due Date for a partial period return depends on the
month you first use your vehicle.

Form 2290 Payment Options
There are 3 payment options to pay taxes to the IRS:
• Direct debit/EFW
The direct debit or EFW (Electronic Funds Withdrawal) pulls money
directly from your account.
• EFTPS
The EFTPS, or Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, is similar to
the EFW but requires an account to be set up at EFTPS.gov.
• Check or money order
check or money orders are simple payments sent to the IRS which are
safer than cash and less complex than the previously mentioned
payment methods.

Requirements to File Form 2290
You need the details of your business –
• Business Name (Sole proprietor can use their legal name)
• Address
• EIN (Employer Identification Number)
• Details of the authorized signatory
• Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
• Gross Weight of the vehicle
If you are going to pay the IRS by direct debit, then have the routing
number and the account number ready.
