Introduction
Countries around the world provide major preference to the
construction industry, but use of traditional practices and improper
planning causes several problems in construction, which may be in
the form of delay in project delivery, increased cost of construction,
poor quality in construction, increased risk of crisis, all these flaws in
construction calls for an effective project management and quality
control system .
In this present study Microsoft project 2013 is used for the purpose of
scheduling and quality control check list are introduced to monitor the
quality in construction .
3
PROJECT AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT
A project is an individual or collaborative enterprise involving
research, design that is carefully planned by the assigned team to
achieve a particular aim.
Project management is the effective management of all the resources
involved in a project such as skills, knowledge, tools and
techniques, cost, people, time, money and many more in order to
meet the needs and expectations of the stake holders.

PROJECT PLANNING
A construction project planning is the process of scheduling all the activities of the
project, and managing various resources involved in the project which may be in the
form of men, material, machinery, skill, knowledge, money etc, in order to complete
the project within the stipulated time period with the specified quality.
Steps in Project planning
Some of the steps involved in planning are as follows
 Scoping Stage
 Schedule development
 Execution stage
 Monitoring
 Rescheduling 6
Fig : Flow chart for project planning
7
Objectives
The main objective of this study is
 To develop effective schedule by defining the various activities and
arranging these activities in an appropriate sequential order.
 To identify the resources required for all activities, allocating and
managing the same with efficiency.
 Estimating the time duration required to complete the individual
activity with the available resources and give the start and end date of
the project.
 To estimate the cost required to complete the project.
 To provide control over the quality of the project by preparing an
effective quality control check list on all the activities of construction.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Abishek and Pathak (2015)
 Analyzed the relation between the project completion time and the manpower
availability as inversely proportional, that is the completion time of the project can
be reduced by increasing the manpower.
 For this study, author considered a multi storey building construction named
“MahadevParisar at ShivajiNagar Bhopal”. The project attributes consists of G+6
floors residential apartments with 92 flats in it. With an available land area of 2.64
acres at shivajinagar Bhopal with the estimated duration of completion of 24 months,
but the project was delayed. In this paper author suggests, the delay was due to the
improper planning, scheduling, execution and controlling of the project.
 In this project MSP2013 is used as the project management tool, and two phase
methodology is adapted.
 As a result the estimated time of completion was exceeded from 693 days to 1424
days, the cost of manpower was exceeded from 2.5 crores to 3.1 crores . The
variance cost of 67 lakhs and the variance time of 731 days were found as a result of
application of scheduling.
9
RamyaSmruthi and Toufeeq (2016)
 Analyzed the use of Microsoft project in comparing the construction of villas, in
this paper the author has considered a case study on a live project construction
called “Ramky Pearls” villas in Hyderabad.
 Time and material management is explained in order to increase the
effectiveness, efficiency and productivity of the project, need for the adoption of
an effective management system with a management tool, effects of
inappropriate time management, such as increased cost, loss of profit and
damage to the reputation are clearly stated.
 The project planning methodology adapted is CPM by using MSP, in this
methodology two types of construction practices are considered
Type 1: Construction of three villas one after the other
Type 2 : Construction of three villas simultaneously, and the data from both the
cases are collected on regular basis, the variation of time and cost on both the
methods are reported using the different report options available in MSP report.
10
Lakshmi R(2015)
 Found that construction industry is contributing heavy to the GDP
of a nation and also provides jobs to several people directly and
indirectly, as so many lives and industries are dependent on the
construction activities, construction quality control and assurance
becomes a major area of concerned.
 Quality control programs are conducted in accordance with the
specified code of practice, and it is made sure that these codes are
practiced in construction, in the form of checklist and quality norms
of the organization, quality assurance is to guarantee the quality in
construction to the clients, by conducting the quality control audits.
 The various construction materials that are considered for quality
control are stone, brick, cement, fine, aggregate, course aggregate,
steel, concrete .

 Project is carried out in two Phases
Phase I
For this Phase of the project, basic information required to execute
the project is collected, basic information includes
 Previous similar successful project schedule
 Site conditions , site survey report are thoroughly studied
 Expert advice on the project
 Labour availability at site
 Material inventory
 Machines used
14
METHODOLOGY
Phase II
This the phase of the project where actual project is executed
Schedule Development
 With the available data and expert judgment various activities
involved in the project are listed and the relationship between each
and every activities are defined.
 Start and end dates for the completion of each and every activities
are defined
15
 The resources available are allocated for each and every activity,
project calendar is set as per the companies working days and
working hours per day.
 The activities are represented by graphical representation called
Gantt chart, which clearly indicates the relation between the
activities in a easily understandable manner, MSP Gantt chart is as
shown in fig
16
MSP Schedule
Fig : List Of Activities and Gantt chart in
Schedule Development
17
 Over allocated resources are leveled by reducing the work hours, or
by increasing the labor as per the required quantity. fig shows the
resource sheet of MSP.
Fig : Resource Sheet
18
SCHEDULE ESTIMATION
 The resource for the specific task can be allocated only by knowing
the quantity of the work to be performed or by knowing the quantity
of materials to be used for that particular activity.
 The quantity of materials to be used and the quantity of work to be
performed in order to complete a particular activity can be
calculated manually using long wall short wall method or grid line
method of estimation with the help of the hard copy of good for
construction drawing available.
19
 All the quantities can also be obtained by softcopy of
AutoCAD drawing approved and issued by the architects.
 The quantities that needs to be calculated are Excavation
quantity, concrete quantity, steel quantity, block work
quantity, plastering quantity, painting and many other
quantity of materials and work that take part in the project.
 All the quantities obtained are tabulated using another most
popular Microsoft software called MS Excel as shown in
Table .

QUALITY CONTROL BY CHECK LIST
 This is a method of quality controlling in a construction project. In this
method a check list is prepared for the purpose of controlling the
quality aspect of the project. This check list is prepared by comparing
various similar successful projects, the methods adapted and the
materials used in their construction are taken into considerations.
 This check list also comprises of the expert judgment and analysis, the
checklist for various activities in the construction are made by
considering the methodology and material standards mentioned in the
construction code of practice.
 The check list is prepared for various activities such as the Excavation,
footing, column and beam erection, slab, block work, plastering and

  • 6. PROJECT PLANNING A construction project planning is the process of scheduling all the activities of the project, and managing various resources involved in the project which may be in the form of men, material, machinery, skill, knowledge, money etc, in order to complete the project within the stipulated time period with the specified quality. Steps in Project planning Some of the steps involved in planning are as follows  Scoping Stage  Schedule development  Execution stage  Monitoring  Rescheduling 6
  • 7. Fig : Flow chart for project planning 7
  • 8. Objectives The main objective of this study is  To develop effective schedule by defining the various activities and arranging these activities in an appropriate sequential order.  To identify the resources required for all activities, allocating and managing the same with efficiency.  Estimating the time duration required to complete the individual activity with the available resources and give the start and end date of the project.  To estimate the cost required to complete the project.  To provide control over the quality of the project by preparing an effective quality control check list on all the activities of construction. 8
  • 9. LITERATURE REVIEW Abishek and Pathak (2015)  Analyzed the relation between the project completion time and the manpower availability as inversely proportional, that is the completion time of the project can be reduced by increasing the manpower.  For this study, author considered a multi storey building construction named “MahadevParisar at ShivajiNagar Bhopal”. The project attributes consists of G+6 floors residential apartments with 92 flats in it. With an available land area of 2.64 acres at shivajinagar Bhopal with the estimated duration of completion of 24 months, but the project was delayed. In this paper author suggests, the delay was due to the improper planning, scheduling, execution and controlling of the project.  In this project MSP2013 is used as the project management tool, and two phase methodology is adapted.  As a result the estimated time of completion was exceeded from 693 days to 1424 days, the cost of manpower was exceeded from 2.5 crores to 3.1 crores . The variance cost of 67 lakhs and the variance time of 731 days were found as a result of application of scheduling. 9
  • 10. RamyaSmruthi and Toufeeq (2016)  Analyzed the use of Microsoft project in comparing the construction of villas, in this paper the author has considered a case study on a live project construction called “Ramky Pearls” villas in Hyderabad.  Time and material management is explained in order to increase the effectiveness, efficiency and productivity of the project, need for the adoption of an effective management system with a management tool, effects of inappropriate time management, such as increased cost, loss of profit and damage to the reputation are clearly stated.  The project planning methodology adapted is CPM by using MSP, in this methodology two types of construction practices are considered Type 1: Construction of three villas one after the other Type 2 : Construction of three villas simultaneously, and the data from both the cases are collected on regular basis, the variation of time and cost on both the methods are reported using the different report options available in MSP report. 10
  • 11. Lakshmi R(2015)  Found that construction industry is contributing heavy to the GDP of a nation and also provides jobs to several people directly and indirectly, as so many lives and industries are dependent on the construction activities, construction quality control and assurance becomes a major area of concerned.  Quality control programs are conducted in accordance with the specified code of practice, and it is made sure that these codes are practiced in construction, in the form of checklist and quality norms of the organization, quality assurance is to guarantee the quality in construction to the clients, by conducting the quality control audits.  The various construction materials that are considered for quality control are stone, brick, cement, fine, aggregate, course aggregate, steel, concrete . 11

  • 14.  Project is carried out in two Phases Phase I For this Phase of the project, basic information required to execute the project is collected, basic information includes  Previous similar successful project schedule  Site conditions , site survey report are thoroughly studied  Expert advice on the project  Labour availability at site  Material inventory  Machines used 14
  • 15. METHODOLOGY Phase II This the phase of the project where actual project is executed Schedule Development  With the available data and expert judgment various activities involved in the project are listed and the relationship between each and every activities are defined.  Start and end dates for the completion of each and every activities are defined 15
  • 16.  The resources available are allocated for each and every activity, project calendar is set as per the companies working days and working hours per day.  The activities are represented by graphical representation called Gantt chart, which clearly indicates the relation between the activities in a easily understandable manner, MSP Gantt chart is as shown in fig 16
  • 17. MSP Schedule Fig : List Of Activities and Gantt chart in Schedule Development 17
  • 18.  Over allocated resources are leveled by reducing the work hours, or by increasing the labor as per the required quantity. fig shows the resource sheet of MSP. Fig : Resource Sheet 18
  • 19. SCHEDULE ESTIMATION  The resource for the specific task can be allocated only by knowing the quantity of the work to be performed or by knowing the quantity of materials to be used for that particular activity.  The quantity of materials to be used and the quantity of work to be performed in order to complete a particular activity can be calculated manually using long wall short wall method or grid line method of estimation with the help of the hard copy of good for construction drawing available. 19
  • 20.  All the quantities can also be obtained by softcopy of AutoCAD drawing approved and issued by the architects.  The quantities that needs to be calculated are Excavation quantity, concrete quantity, steel quantity, block work quantity, plastering quantity, painting and many other quantity of materials and work that take part in the project.  All the quantities obtained are tabulated using another most popular Microsoft software called MS Excel as shown in Table . 20
