Facility Layout means:
It is a process by which the placement of departments, workgroups with in
departments, workstations, machines, and stock-holding points within a facility
are determined.
Objectives of Good Layout:
 Providing enough production capacity
 Utilize available space efficiently and effectively
 Reducing material handling costs
 Utilize labour efficiently
 Provide ease of supervision
 Facilitate co-ordination and face to face communication for better
productivity and also quick service
The overall objective of good layout is IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY.
This process requires following inputs:
 Specification of objectives of the system
 Space requirements for the elements in the layout
 Space availability within the facility itself
Factors Determining Layout and Design:
1) Ease of Future expansion or change:
The layout designed should be flexible so that it can be changed
according to the future needs at the time of any expansions if needed.
2) Flow of movement:
The facility design should reflect the process of flow smoothly. When
the flow is against or across the overall flow, it becomes confusion and
coordination also becomes complicated.
3) Materials handling:
It should make certain that the facility layout makes it possible to handle
materials in an orderly, efficient and in a simple manner.
4) Space Utilization:
The space should be utilized in a proper way that it should help in
3
reducing time.
5) Ease of communication and support:
Facility should be laid in a proper way so that communication within
various areas of business and interactions with co-employees and
customers can be done easily and effective manner.
“Facility layout must be considered very carefully because the companies
do not want to redesign facility constantly.”
 Characteristics of Facility layout decision:
 The amount and type of space required for various areas
 The amount and type of space available
 The operations strategy
 Principles of Layout:
 The principle of Minimum Travel:
There should be a minimum travel from one department to
another in order to avoid waste of labour and time.
 Principle of sequence:
There should be a sequence in the arrangement of machinery
and operations.
 Principle of usage:
This principle states that each and every foot in the
organization space should be utilized properly and effectively.
 Principle of compactness:
There should be a harmonious fusion of all the relevant factors
so that the final layout looks well integrated and compact.
 Principle of Safety and Satisfaction:
It should planned so that it should result in the comfort and
convenience to the workers and they should feel satisfied.
 Principle of Minimum Investment:
This principle states that layout should not involve huge investment.
4
 Types of Layout:
 Process layout
 Product layout
 Static layout
 Cellular layout
 Hybrid layout
1. Process layout:
 Used when the operations system must handle a wide variety of
products in relatively small volumes.
 The layouts include departments or other functional groups in which
similar kind of activities are performed.
 Example – machine shop which has separate departments for milling,
grinding, drilling etc.,
2. Product layout:
 It is used to achieve a smooth and rapid flow of large volumes of
products or customers through a system.
 Example – if a portion of a manufacturing operation require the
sequence of cutting, sanding and painting and it should be arranged
in that sequence.
3. Static layout:
 The item being worked on remains stationary and workers, materials,
equipment’s are moved as needed.
4. Cellular layout:
 This layout groups all machineries into cells, which function
somewhat like a product layout.
5. Hybrid layout:
 It is a type of layout in which a process layout is combined with a
product layout.
 Example – super markets
Service facility Layout
 Service facility exist to bring together customers and services.
 It should provide easy entrance to service facilities from freeways and busy
5
thoroughfares.
 Parking areas, walkways are some of the requirements of service facility
layouts.
 Importance of Facility layout:
 Economies in Handling
 Effective use of Available area
 Minimization of production delays
 Improved Quality Control
 Minimum Equipment Investment
 Avoidance of bottlenecks
 Better production control
 Improved utilization of labour
 Improved Employee morale
 Avoidance of unnecessary and costly changes
Objectives of my Research:
 The present layout of SBI bank is properly facilitated or not
 Does it need to undergo any changes
 Is there any issues in the layout
 Does the space available is properly utilized or not

Findings and Recommendations:
1) Here the entire layout of SBI is properly laid
2) Space is properly utilized
3) The facility is laid in such a way that there is a flow of work and
communication
4) Here the only drawback is with parking facility
5) It is a big problem in Tilak road for traffic
6) For this only reason they are trying to change their location
7) So, instead of parking at the front portion of building there is a small space
beside bank so there it can provide parking facility to its both employees as
well as customers.
