PROJECT REPORT
Abstract:
Proposal for Chairman (Sharda university) to set up “Sharda Recreational
Activity” to provide recreational facilities to its students .
Recreational Activity
Recreation is an activity of leisure, leisure being discretionary time. The "need to
do something for recreation" is an essential element of human biology and
psychology. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or
pleasure and are considered to be "fun"
Why Recreational Activity
Recreational sports are important to the quality of life and communities. It has
been long associated with benefits to health such as heart disease, diabetes and
bowel cancer. It also helps decrease overweight and obesity numbers with regular
physical activity among people and communities.
Recreational sports have been reported as changing lives. The activities create
positive outcomes such as confidence, self-respect, self-esteem, trust, self reliance
and leadership abilities.
“Over the last 15 years however, sports, outdoor pursuits and constructive leisure
activities have been a well established feature of initiatives whose aim is to divert
offenders and young people at risk away from crime”. Therefore, participating in
recreational activities can help young men and women stay away from crime and
can become leaders.
Recreational sports provide challenges and adventures for individuals. In the
economic aspect, promoting physical activity for employees makes good business
sense. As for college students, recreational sports programs and activities are
correlated with overall college satisfaction and success. Students become more
socially oriented than other students who don’t participated in recreational sports.
Other benefits of recreational sports include reduction of stress, improvement of
happiness, build character, improve interaction with diverse sets of people, and
contribute to time management.
Recreation is essential to the longevity of humans because it assists with lowering
stress levels. Organized recreational activities can be found at local parks,
YMCA’s, churches, and other community facilities. These types of programs are
successful because they include recreation for the entire family.
Regular family activities can help everyone become more active and healthier.
This gives both parents and children the opportunity to interact as a family and
have fun together. In addition, some community facilities include senior citizen
programming.
Indoor recreational programs can include martial arts, table tennis, racquetball,
bowling, indoor swimming, indoor treadmills, indoor bicycling, arts and crafts,
indoor skating, and more.
Recreation Center in other Colleges:
In recent years, universities have come to the realization that their academic
prestige alone is not enough to attract the world’s top students, athletes, and overall
academic participants. In an era when students are more mobile and discerning
than ever, university officials have gone on a major building boom that has seen
designer dorms, stunning libraries, and amazing recreation centers characterize
campuses across the world.
Vanderbilt University
The Vanderbilt facility features slightly more than 132,000 square feet of strength
training space and practice facilities. Squash courts and racquetball facilities can
also be found at this central facility on campus, as can group fitness classes and
personal training instruction upon request. The field house is currently being
expanded and renovated, and a new multi-purpose facility is being built, which
should make Vandy’s recreation offerings even better.
Vanderbilt University pairs their indoor facilities with an outdoor recreation area,
which offers outdoor facilities and programming, and this is where Vanderbilt
really shines. That outdoor facility features everything from athletic practice fields
to rock climbing and a standard track. Students can even take kayaking classes!
University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA’s athletic reputation and central location make it the perfect place for a state
of the art fitness center, and that’s exactly what students will find when they enter
the campus’ John Wooden Center. Three separate basketball gymnasiums can be
found here, as well as personal fitness trainers and a full strength training center.
Squash and racquetball courts abound, as do group instruction rooms and
meditation areas. The gym employs its own unique brand of personal fitness
known as FITWELL, which helps students create a healthy lifestyle both inside
and outside of the gym. Because the school has managed to build its own state-of-
the-art facility, and create a unique fitness program for students and faculty, it
should be considered a serious contender for sports-minded students
University of Wyoming
Wyoming can be a seriously challenging place to live, especially when trying to
stay fit during the state’s punishing winters and relatively scorching summers. The
University of Wyoming tries to make the state’s climate a bit more amenable for
students with its student recreation facility, though. Strength training, indoor
swimming, relaxation areas, and a circuit training facility, are all a part of the
innovative fitness center found on campus.
And, while the student recreation center is actually quite new and impressive
already, campus officials are currently in the planning stages for a half-acre
addition to the facility that will culminate in a full overhaul of the entire gym
before the expansion wraps up in 2014.
The Ohio State University
For students who like their indoor, Olympic-sized pool to come with a bubble
bench and a slide, there is perhaps no better option than the 500,000 square foot
recreation center that can be found at Ohio State University. The state’s biggest
academic institution is also home to the single biggest university rec center in the
state of Ohio, and that means good things for students. In addition to the innovative
pool, students will find everything from a boulder wall to racquetball courts and an
indoor gym.
Ohio State is another university that has its own recreational campus where
students can work on their own health and athletic skills both indoors and
outdoors. When take all together, the university’s commitment to campus
recreation is easily among the top ten nationwide.
Recommended Scope of the Project:
Sharda University is one of the best private universities of country and is set up in
Greater Noida. Students from all parts of country come to Sharda University for
their higher education and co-curricular development. However, Greater Noida is
not a very lively and fun area to be in. There are very few recreational activities to
do in whole area. In absence of a recreational centre, students easily get stressed
out and avoid classes. To avoid this stressing out and provide a good environment
to students, I propose setting up a Recreational Activity Centre in the campus.
The proposal recommends that the Sharda Recreation Center (SRC) and
adjacent field be located at the area behind SHARDA HOSPITAL. This area is
currently football ground.
The proposal recommends that the SRC have a total gross square footage of
50,000 SF. Table-1 provides an exact accounting of what components would be
part of the 50,000 SF SRC, which includes 5,000 SF for circulation, mechanical,
electrical and fire suppression space.
SHARDA RECREATION CENTER
Gymnasium (6 Courts Informal Rec.)
Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton
12,000 sq. ft
Multipurpose Courts (Indoor Soccer,
Floor Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball)
6,000 sq. ft
Gym Storage Area 1,000 sq. ft
Fitness (Cardio, Selectorized, Stretching
Areas)
10,000 sq. ft
Weight Room (Free Weights, Plate
Loaded)
2,000 sq. ft
Locker Room 1500 sq. ft
Swimming Pool 4,000 sq. ft
Jogging Track (Suspended 4-Lane
Running Track)
4,000 sq. ft
Sports Clubs (Multi-purpose activity
space)
2,000 sq. ft
Fitness Lab 500 sq. ft
Administration Offices 500 sq. ft
Circulation Mechanical, Electrical, Fire
Suppression Spaces.
4,000 sq. ft.
Total gross sq. ft. 50,000 sq. ft.
A cost estimate of Rs. 10,000,000 was calculated by University Planning Design
and Construction (UPDC) that included construction costs, administrative costs,
equipment and furnishings.
The equipment and furnishings estimate included Rs. 5,000,000 for cardio
equipment, Rs. 1,000,000 for free weight & plate loaded area, $165,980 for
selectorized and core training area, and Rs. 2,000,000 for the rubber flooring.
Other equipment and furnishings expenses include: office furniture, classroom
furniture, outdoor furniture, decorative hallway seating, lobby furniture, juice bar
furniture, washer & dryer and other equipment needs.
Once the SRC is open, the exception of the weight and fitness area and the
locker rooms. The weight & fitness areas and the locker rooms would still be
available for all students and would provide another recreational space for
employees and students
The remaining area should be utilized for student lounge and meeting
space needs, unless an agreement can be reached between the University and SGA
leadership to better utilize the space to enhance student life.
Fee Recommendation:
The fee recommendation that is being proposed is a phased in fee starting with new
students in the Fall of 2013 at a cost of Rs. 5,000 per semester for full-time
students. The proposed student recreation fee would be applied to all new students
(including graduate and professional students) and pro-rated, per credit hour for
less than full-time students. Once the bond amortization payments are completed
the fee would be Rs. 2,500.
If the student recreation fee is approved, it will enable the University to greatly
enhance the quality of student life in campus. The recreation fee will provide the
following benefits for students:
 The Intramural Sports Department will no longer charge entry fees for
intramural leagues, tournaments or fitness classes. The current charges
are Rs. 1,500 per team and Rs. 2,000 for fitness class registration.
These would now be covered by the recreation fee.
 Sharda Recreation Center would provide significantly expanded hours
of operation. The proposed SRC would be open 108 hours per week
with weekday hours of 6:00 AM to midnight, Saturday hours of 11:00
AM to 8:00 PM and Sunday hours of 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
 The SRC will enhance the sport club program. There is dedicated
space inside the SRC for our sport clubs and the outdoor turf field will
provide additional space for club practice.
 The recreation fee will also provide the financial support necessary to
maintain and purchase equipment for the Health Science Campus
Fitness Facility.
 The Intramural Sports Department will continue to offer an Alumni
Membership program which will gain popularity with a state of the art
recreational facility.
 The new SRC will provide increased opportunities for students to
increase their personal level of fitness. In addition to the increased
fitness spaces, there will be an indoor track, expanded fitness class
offerings, personal training and a fitness lab for personal fitness
assessments.
Related Recommendations:
A concern that students expressed about the recommended SRC location was the
resulting loss of football ground. This Committee recommended that the University
provide a ground outside the University Campus.
It is recommended that, once a student graduates, they would be provided six
months of free SRC usage immediately following their graduation. This is viewed
as a benefit for recent graduates and provides a free recreational option during this
time of transition. After the six-month period, alumni would be eligible to
purchase an alumni membership.
Summary:
The Student Recreation Center would be located behind Sharda Hospital Bulding,
thus creating a “Campus Town Center”. The facility will feature recreational sports
programs along with life style educational activities that serve the needs of both the
residential and commuting students. The SRC would also provide multi-functional
space for informal recreation, competitive intramural sports, fitness classes, life
wellness programs and space for a variety of University sports clubs and other
campus activities.
The design would incorporate innovative “Green” technologies, including
energy conservation, water management and abundant natural lighting, serving as
an example of good stewardship for the University community. The SRC would
achieve the goals of a high-performance, energy-efficient facility commensurate
with the 2008 Legislature’s requirements and a LEED Silver rating.
When completed, the SRC would prove to be a vital asset in achieving the
University’s 2020 goals of attracting the best and brightest students, improving the
quality of the educational and student life experience, and improving graduation
rates. The SRC “Background Research Document” is part of the Committee
report. This background document provides national assessment data, U of L
specific assessments, benchmarking, and justification information about the need
for expanded recreational facility space for students.
Conclusion
The construction of Sharda recreational centre will benefit Sharda University in
many ways.
It will lower the stress of students. This is a major goal for university as in last 2
years, there have been 2 cases of suicide and 2 attempts. A recreational centre will
lower the student’s stress considerably.
It will also get media coverage as Sharda University will be first to have such a
Recreational Activity Centre.
Apart from these benefits, the centre will also attract more students to students and
the membership fees will increase the revenue of university.

Proposal on recreational activity center

  • 2. Abstract: Proposal for Chairman (Sharda university) to set up “Sharda Recreational Activity” to provide recreational facilities to its students .
  • 3. Recreational Activity Recreation is an activity of leisure, leisure being discretionary time. The "need to do something for recreation" is an essential element of human biology and psychology. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be "fun" Why Recreational Activity Recreational sports are important to the quality of life and communities. It has been long associated with benefits to health such as heart disease, diabetes and bowel cancer. It also helps decrease overweight and obesity numbers with regular physical activity among people and communities. Recreational sports have been reported as changing lives. The activities create positive outcomes such as confidence, self-respect, self-esteem, trust, self reliance and leadership abilities. “Over the last 15 years however, sports, outdoor pursuits and constructive leisure activities have been a well established feature of initiatives whose aim is to divert offenders and young people at risk away from crime”. Therefore, participating in recreational activities can help young men and women stay away from crime and can become leaders. Recreational sports provide challenges and adventures for individuals. In the economic aspect, promoting physical activity for employees makes good business sense. As for college students, recreational sports programs and activities are correlated with overall college satisfaction and success. Students become more socially oriented than other students who don’t participated in recreational sports. Other benefits of recreational sports include reduction of stress, improvement of happiness, build character, improve interaction with diverse sets of people, and contribute to time management. Recreation is essential to the longevity of humans because it assists with lowering stress levels. Organized recreational activities can be found at local parks, YMCA’s, churches, and other community facilities. These types of programs are successful because they include recreation for the entire family.
  • 4. Regular family activities can help everyone become more active and healthier. This gives both parents and children the opportunity to interact as a family and have fun together. In addition, some community facilities include senior citizen programming. Indoor recreational programs can include martial arts, table tennis, racquetball, bowling, indoor swimming, indoor treadmills, indoor bicycling, arts and crafts, indoor skating, and more. Recreation Center in other Colleges: In recent years, universities have come to the realization that their academic prestige alone is not enough to attract the world’s top students, athletes, and overall academic participants. In an era when students are more mobile and discerning than ever, university officials have gone on a major building boom that has seen designer dorms, stunning libraries, and amazing recreation centers characterize campuses across the world. Vanderbilt University The Vanderbilt facility features slightly more than 132,000 square feet of strength training space and practice facilities. Squash courts and racquetball facilities can also be found at this central facility on campus, as can group fitness classes and
  • 5. personal training instruction upon request. The field house is currently being expanded and renovated, and a new multi-purpose facility is being built, which should make Vandy’s recreation offerings even better. Vanderbilt University pairs their indoor facilities with an outdoor recreation area, which offers outdoor facilities and programming, and this is where Vanderbilt really shines. That outdoor facility features everything from athletic practice fields to rock climbing and a standard track. Students can even take kayaking classes! University of California at Los Angeles UCLA’s athletic reputation and central location make it the perfect place for a state of the art fitness center, and that’s exactly what students will find when they enter the campus’ John Wooden Center. Three separate basketball gymnasiums can be found here, as well as personal fitness trainers and a full strength training center.
  • 6. Squash and racquetball courts abound, as do group instruction rooms and meditation areas. The gym employs its own unique brand of personal fitness known as FITWELL, which helps students create a healthy lifestyle both inside and outside of the gym. Because the school has managed to build its own state-of- the-art facility, and create a unique fitness program for students and faculty, it should be considered a serious contender for sports-minded students University of Wyoming Wyoming can be a seriously challenging place to live, especially when trying to stay fit during the state’s punishing winters and relatively scorching summers. The University of Wyoming tries to make the state’s climate a bit more amenable for students with its student recreation facility, though. Strength training, indoor swimming, relaxation areas, and a circuit training facility, are all a part of the innovative fitness center found on campus. And, while the student recreation center is actually quite new and impressive already, campus officials are currently in the planning stages for a half-acre
  • 7. addition to the facility that will culminate in a full overhaul of the entire gym before the expansion wraps up in 2014. The Ohio State University For students who like their indoor, Olympic-sized pool to come with a bubble bench and a slide, there is perhaps no better option than the 500,000 square foot recreation center that can be found at Ohio State University. The state’s biggest academic institution is also home to the single biggest university rec center in the state of Ohio, and that means good things for students. In addition to the innovative pool, students will find everything from a boulder wall to racquetball courts and an indoor gym. Ohio State is another university that has its own recreational campus where students can work on their own health and athletic skills both indoors and
  • 8. outdoors. When take all together, the university’s commitment to campus recreation is easily among the top ten nationwide. Recommended Scope of the Project: Sharda University is one of the best private universities of country and is set up in Greater Noida. Students from all parts of country come to Sharda University for their higher education and co-curricular development. However, Greater Noida is not a very lively and fun area to be in. There are very few recreational activities to do in whole area. In absence of a recreational centre, students easily get stressed out and avoid classes. To avoid this stressing out and provide a good environment to students, I propose setting up a Recreational Activity Centre in the campus. The proposal recommends that the Sharda Recreation Center (SRC) and adjacent field be located at the area behind SHARDA HOSPITAL. This area is currently football ground.
  • 9. The proposal recommends that the SRC have a total gross square footage of 50,000 SF. Table-1 provides an exact accounting of what components would be part of the 50,000 SF SRC, which includes 5,000 SF for circulation, mechanical, electrical and fire suppression space. SHARDA RECREATION CENTER Gymnasium (6 Courts Informal Rec.) Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton 12,000 sq. ft Multipurpose Courts (Indoor Soccer, Floor Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball) 6,000 sq. ft Gym Storage Area 1,000 sq. ft Fitness (Cardio, Selectorized, Stretching Areas) 10,000 sq. ft Weight Room (Free Weights, Plate Loaded) 2,000 sq. ft
  • 10. Locker Room 1500 sq. ft Swimming Pool 4,000 sq. ft Jogging Track (Suspended 4-Lane Running Track) 4,000 sq. ft Sports Clubs (Multi-purpose activity space) 2,000 sq. ft Fitness Lab 500 sq. ft Administration Offices 500 sq. ft Circulation Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Suppression Spaces. 4,000 sq. ft. Total gross sq. ft. 50,000 sq. ft. A cost estimate of Rs. 10,000,000 was calculated by University Planning Design and Construction (UPDC) that included construction costs, administrative costs, equipment and furnishings. The equipment and furnishings estimate included Rs. 5,000,000 for cardio equipment, Rs. 1,000,000 for free weight & plate loaded area, $165,980 for selectorized and core training area, and Rs. 2,000,000 for the rubber flooring. Other equipment and furnishings expenses include: office furniture, classroom furniture, outdoor furniture, decorative hallway seating, lobby furniture, juice bar furniture, washer & dryer and other equipment needs. Once the SRC is open, the exception of the weight and fitness area and the locker rooms. The weight & fitness areas and the locker rooms would still be available for all students and would provide another recreational space for employees and students The remaining area should be utilized for student lounge and meeting space needs, unless an agreement can be reached between the University and SGA leadership to better utilize the space to enhance student life.
  • 11. Fee Recommendation: The fee recommendation that is being proposed is a phased in fee starting with new students in the Fall of 2013 at a cost of Rs. 5,000 per semester for full-time students. The proposed student recreation fee would be applied to all new students (including graduate and professional students) and pro-rated, per credit hour for less than full-time students. Once the bond amortization payments are completed the fee would be Rs. 2,500. If the student recreation fee is approved, it will enable the University to greatly enhance the quality of student life in campus. The recreation fee will provide the following benefits for students:  The Intramural Sports Department will no longer charge entry fees for intramural leagues, tournaments or fitness classes. The current charges are Rs. 1,500 per team and Rs. 2,000 for fitness class registration. These would now be covered by the recreation fee.  Sharda Recreation Center would provide significantly expanded hours of operation. The proposed SRC would be open 108 hours per week with weekday hours of 6:00 AM to midnight, Saturday hours of 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Sunday hours of 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM.  The SRC will enhance the sport club program. There is dedicated space inside the SRC for our sport clubs and the outdoor turf field will provide additional space for club practice.  The recreation fee will also provide the financial support necessary to maintain and purchase equipment for the Health Science Campus Fitness Facility.  The Intramural Sports Department will continue to offer an Alumni Membership program which will gain popularity with a state of the art recreational facility.
  • 12.  The new SRC will provide increased opportunities for students to increase their personal level of fitness. In addition to the increased fitness spaces, there will be an indoor track, expanded fitness class offerings, personal training and a fitness lab for personal fitness assessments. Related Recommendations: A concern that students expressed about the recommended SRC location was the resulting loss of football ground. This Committee recommended that the University provide a ground outside the University Campus. It is recommended that, once a student graduates, they would be provided six months of free SRC usage immediately following their graduation. This is viewed as a benefit for recent graduates and provides a free recreational option during this time of transition. After the six-month period, alumni would be eligible to purchase an alumni membership. Summary: The Student Recreation Center would be located behind Sharda Hospital Bulding, thus creating a “Campus Town Center”. The facility will feature recreational sports programs along with life style educational activities that serve the needs of both the residential and commuting students. The SRC would also provide multi-functional space for informal recreation, competitive intramural sports, fitness classes, life wellness programs and space for a variety of University sports clubs and other campus activities. The design would incorporate innovative “Green” technologies, including energy conservation, water management and abundant natural lighting, serving as an example of good stewardship for the University community. The SRC would achieve the goals of a high-performance, energy-efficient facility commensurate with the 2008 Legislature’s requirements and a LEED Silver rating.
  • 13. When completed, the SRC would prove to be a vital asset in achieving the University’s 2020 goals of attracting the best and brightest students, improving the quality of the educational and student life experience, and improving graduation rates. The SRC “Background Research Document” is part of the Committee report. This background document provides national assessment data, U of L specific assessments, benchmarking, and justification information about the need for expanded recreational facility space for students. Conclusion The construction of Sharda recreational centre will benefit Sharda University in many ways. It will lower the stress of students. This is a major goal for university as in last 2 years, there have been 2 cases of suicide and 2 attempts. A recreational centre will lower the student’s stress considerably. It will also get media coverage as Sharda University will be first to have such a Recreational Activity Centre. Apart from these benefits, the centre will also attract more students to students and the membership fees will increase the revenue of university.
