Loris Malaguzzi founded the Reggio Emilia approach to 
learning on the premises that children develop through 
interactions, first with the adults in their lives – parents 
and teachers – then with their peers, and ultimately with 
the environment around them. Environment, said 
Malaguzzi, is the third teacher.”

Third Teacher Project 
Vision Statement 
• To support, encourage and inspire staff and students to co-design engaging 
learning spaces, that will enable and enrich teaching and learning at St 
Paul’s. 
Core Values 
 Promote co-creation, not only amongst staff and students, but all members 
of the School community, creating a sense of ownership, respect and 
responsibility 
 Utilise design principles to reimagine learning spaces that support 21st 
Century pedagogies, whilst respecting the School’s history and architecture 
 Design and implement a process that can guide as well as support staff 
through reimagining learning spaces 
 Foster and nurture the philosophies of Reggio Emilia and The Third Teacher 
throughout the School

The Third Teacher Project Agenda • Project Background • Identifying Best Practice • Pilot expressions of Interest from Staff “In the 1940s, pioneering Italian teacher and psychologist Loris Malaguzzi founded the Reggio Emilia approach to learning on the premises that children develop through interactions, first with the adults in their lives – parents and teachers – then with their peers, and ultimately with the environment around them. Environment, said Malaguzzi, is the third teacher.” -OWP/P Architects et al. 2012
  • 2. “How might we create engaging learning spaces with all members of the School community?” What is our mission statement and values that the Third Teacher Project stands for? How do we look to support staff expressions of interest in developing the environment for learning? How will we celebrate and share transformations to learning spaces with the SPS and wider community? What kind of obstacles and road blocks lie ahead and how will we hope to adapt, minimise and overcome them? How can we encourage staff to co-create flexible, humanised learning spaces that support teaching and learning? How can we ensure that any or all future developments at SPS makes considerations for the environment for learning? How will we ensure students co-create learning spaces with us, whether at a classroom or larger project level? How do we grow a culture, among staff and students, of positive ownership of learning spaces?

Third Teacher Project Vision Statement • To support, encourage and inspire staff and students to co-design engaging learning spaces, that will enable and enrich teaching and learning at St Paul’s. Core Values  Promote co-creation, not only amongst staff and students, but all members of the School community, creating a sense of ownership, respect and responsibility  Utilise design principles to reimagine learning spaces that support 21st Century pedagogies, whilst respecting the School’s history and architecture  Design and implement a process that can guide as well as support staff through reimagining learning spaces  Foster and nurture the philosophies of Reggio Emilia and The Third Teacher throughout the School
