2. What is Creative Commons (CC)?
• CC – non-profit organization devoted to
expanding the range of creative works available
for others to build upon legally and to share
• CC replace individual negotiations for specific
rights between copyright owner (licensor) and
licensee, which are necessary under an "all rights
reserved" copyright management, with a "some
rights reserved"

3. CC history
• 2001 – Creative Commons founded.
• 2002 – Version 1.0 licenses released.
Approximately 1 million licenses in use.
• 2004 – Version 2.0 released. Estimated 4.7
million licensed works by the end of the year.
• 2007 – Version 3.0 released. Estimated 90 million
licensed works.
• 2012 – Estimated 500 million licensed works.
• 2013 – Newest Version 4.0 released.

Icon Right Short description
Attribution (BY)
This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon
your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the
original creation.
Non-commercial (NC)
Licensees may copy, distribute, display, and perform the work and
make derivative works based on it only for noncommercial
purposes.
No Derivative Works (ND)
Licensees may copy, distribute, display and perform only verbatim
copies of the work, not derivative works based on it.
Share-alike (SA)
Licensees may distribute derivative works only under a license
identical to the license that governs the original work.

This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your
work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original
creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered.
Recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed
materials.
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even
for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their
new creations under the identical terms. This license is often
compared to “copyleft” free and open source software licenses. All
new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any
derivatives will also allow commercial use.
This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial,
as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to
you.

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-
commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-
commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new
creations under the identical terms.
This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, only
allowing others to download your works and share them with others
as long as they credit you, but they can’t change them in any way or
use them commercially.
