• Body divided into two major parts:
Cephalothorax – head and main body cavity
Abdomen – muscular, segmented dorsal part of
body
• Usually 16 – 20 body segments
• Carapace – shell covering cephalothorax

• Males release sperm packet
using modified appendages
• Females mate during molting –
hold sperm packet until
fertilization
• Females carry fertilized eggs
under abdomen until hatching
