8. Consumer demand is changing our supply chain
Book distribution & POD
Mathijs Suidman | m.suidman@cb.nl
• Internet companies are focused on ultimate consumer satisfaction
• Next day and even same day delivery is ‘the benchmark’
• Consumer behavior becomes more demanding
• It’s not just effecting internet companies, but the whole industry
• Supply chains are changing rapidly due to consumer demand
• For the book trade: print on demand becomes a necessity to deliver, now!
9. Fully integrated print on demand
• CB offers publishers an fully integrated print on demand solution
• Titles which are (temporarily) out of stock will be printed when ordered, with the same delivery time of books which are in stock
• This service started in 2011 and is fulfilled by a joint venture of CB and Printforce
• In 2017, CB acquired 50% of Printforce in answer to the fast growing demand of POD
• At the end of 2018 Printforce will be completely integrated in CB and Printforce will be able to further reduce production costs for
publishers due to a larger an innovative production scale and will focus specifically on integrated short print production

12. Focus on Total Cost of Ownership, not just production costs
Book distribution & POD
Mathijs Suidman | m.suidman@cb.nl
• TCO also includes the costs of:
• Inbound processes
• Storage
• Outbound picking costs for overstock
• Returns
• Investment in production of stock
• Traditionally production and distribution possesses (and costs) are managed
separately within a publishing company, limiting TCO focus
• A focus and strong drive for the lowest production cost, could increase costs
of distribution substantially to the extend of a higher TCO
13. Availability is key!
Lost sales
Dutch market research shows that
66% of sales is lost in case a title is
in ‘re-print’ status at CB and
waiting for new stock
Used books
Visibility of used used books
(through online sales) is a threat
for publishers
Customer demand
In case of ‘re-print’,
45% buys a used copy
Short-sighted
Waiting to ‘re-print’ to investigate
market demand, results in losing
200 orders for every 100 back orders

14. Not just for ‘slow sellers’
The unexpected
Unexpected publicity and success
in sales is driving our single copy
POD production
In between stock
Although aimed at the market of ‘slow
sellers’, single copy POD at CB is
recognized by publishers as an ideal
‘in between stock’ service, even
for bestsellers
No missed sales
Publishers are making sure they
(and their authors)
will not miss any sales
Communicating vessels
Since our POD solution is fully integrated
as a warehouse, it forms communicating
vessels with our stock warehouses:
As soon a stock is being replenished,
we will stop single copy POD and
deliver from stock. Vice versa.

• Specifically in educational and professional publishing
• Offering new enhancements such as:
• Adding unique codes for access tot digital education
portals/apps
• Customized printing for personalized learning
