3. A Brief History
A British anthropologist, Sir Flinders Petrie,
discovered in the 1930’ss collection of objects in a
child’s grave in Egypt that appeared to be a crude
form of bowling.
If this is correct, then bowling traces its ancestry to
3200 BC.
A German historian, William Pehle, says bowling
started in his country about 300 AD
Evidence that bowling was in vogue in England in
1366(King Edward the 3 rd outlawed it)
5. American Beginnings
By the 1800’s it was
prevalent in many states
New York, Ohio and as far
“west” as Illinois.
Details like ball weights and
pin dimensions varied by
region
On September 9, 1895 the
American bowling congress
was born
Standardization was
established, and major
competitions could be held
6. Scoring
10 frames, minimum score
of 0 and max of 300
Each frame consists of
two chances to knock 10
pins down
You want to get strikes
and spares
No open frames (if you
want to kick butt)
7. Strikes
Strikes are when you
knock all ten pins down on
your first ball
Strikes are worth 10, plus
the value of your next two
rolls
You mark strikes with a X
8. Spares
Spares happen when you
knock all ten pins down in
to shots
A spare is worth 10, plus
the value of your next roll
You score a spare with a /
9. Open Frame
If, after two shots, at least
one pin is still standing,
it’s called an open frame
Open frames are taken at
face value
So you add what you
managed to knock down
in two shots to your
running score
10. Putting Everything Together
Most people understand the
basics but get confused when
trying to add everything up.
Your total score is nothing more
than the sum of each individual
frame.
If you treat each frame
individually, it’s much easier to
comprehend the scoring
system.
Fortunately for this generation
you have computers to do the
scoring for you.
13. Choosing The Right Ball
Find your ideal weight
Determine your ideal
cover stock
Find the right finger hole
size
You can choose a house
ball
Or you can have one
custom made for you
14. Plastic balls
Great for beginners
Cheap
This cover stock is not for
throwing consistent strikes
Good for spares because
the cover stock repels oil,
and with go straight from
your release point
15. Reactive Resin Ball
The resin particles
cause ball to skid on
top of oil
Also grip the dry part
of lane much better
Great for hooking the
ball which is called
backend
Great for strikes
16. Urethane Ball
Gradual controllable hook
(backend)
Great for consistency and
control over and over
again because this ball
won’t absorb the oil from
lane
A reliable addition to any
arsenal
17. Bowling Etiquette
Never go to bowl if there is someone already bowling
on either side of you
This is considered rude
Have seen people fighting over this
Don’t go to bowl on lane if your shoes are wet, this
will cause you or someone else to stick in mid stride,
and fall (funny yes, but dangerous)
Please be quiet while a bowler is up (we need to
concentrate)
18. Bowling Gear
Bowling attire has changed in many ways
Then again it is still the same in many years
You can go either retro or new age
It’s your choice
