Wales is one of the nations making up the
United Kingdom. Located to the west of the
island of Great Britain, where it borders with
England to the east and the west of Ireland
and Celtic seas of the Atlantic. It has a
population of 3.1 million people, is a bilingual
country, the official languages are English and
Welsh. The capital and biggest city is Cardiff or
Caerdydd (305,000 people).

Wales or Cymru (Welsh) has been
inhabited by modern humans for at least
29,000 years, although stable settlements
in the territory does not appear until the
last Ice Age. In Wales there are many sites
and remains of the Neolithic period
(mainly dolmens and cromlechs) and
subsequent traces of Bronze Age and Iron
Age.

Wales is a generally mountainous country on
the western side of central southern Great
Britain. It is about 274 km north–south and 97
km east–west. Wales is bordered by England to
the east and by sea in all other directions: the
Irish Sea to the north and west, St George's
Channel and the Celtic Sea to the southwest
and the Bristol Channel to the south.
Altogether, Wales has over 1,180 km of
coastline. Over 50 islands lie off the Welsh
mainland; the largest being Anglesey, in the
northwest.

fresh air and peaceful Snowdonia Mountains
for example. These mountains are located in a
national park of the same name and runs a
famous railroad where the broad valleys and
lakes that are located in the foothills of the
mountains.
