8. But, why choosing the South Asian communities and why focusing on Diabetes?
INdu: My role on the team includes screening participant for prediabetes by taking their Anthropometric measurements – this means their wt, Ht and BMI and waist circumference, in our program we use the WHO parameters for South asian. Zem: My role in includes the clinical part in performing the finger prick test to screen for glucose levels and after that I asses the risk factor which I get from the answers from questionnaire and the anthropometric values. I then make appropriate referels whether it is to Mid Toronto Diabetes Program, physician or the Dietician.
The tool was developed by both the clinicians. We retrieved research from credible sources such as the CDA, WHO, Health Canada and peer reviewed journals to develop our tool. Our tool has 3 components: Questionnaire which ask about the risk factors, such as family history. The second part is the Anthropometric section (which calculates BMI and waist measurements) and the third part id the blood glucose testing (fasting and/or Random). We are very proud of the development of this tool and it’s comprehensive design
