• One of the earliest examples of a print magazine is Erbauliche Monaths
Unterredungen, (Edifying Monthly Discussions) a German literary and
philosophy magazine, launched in 1663.
• London's first ever magazine was The Gentleman’s Magazine, which was first
published in 1731 and was edited by Edward Cave, who used the pen name
‘Sylvanus Urban’. Cave is the first known person to use the term ‘magazine’.
• The first illustrated magazine want released until 1842, by Herbert Ingram.The
illustrations featured in The Illustrated London News.
• The oldest consumer magazine still in print is The Scots Magazine, and was first
published in 1739.
3. Development of Print Magazine
• The first ever magazines were manufactured with a printing press in an archaic
form, with the use of large, hand-engraved wooden blocks and printing ink.
• When the demand for magazines increased, large production lines were
created to mass produce the wooden blocks and therefore more magazines
could be made to be sold.

by Schlicht & Field of NewYork as The Cosmopolitan
• As the new editor John Brisben started introducing colour
illustrations, serials and book reviews. It became a leading
market for fiction
• Cosmopolitan has been around since 1886, but it wasn’t
until Helen Gurley brown took the reins in 1965 that things
starting getting... sexier. As the magazine’s editor-in-chief
from 1965 until 1997, Brown turned Cosmo’s focus to sex,
relationships, female pleasure and, well, more sex.The
headlines were titillating, the topics were frank and the
fashion?
• Cosmopolitan today is best known for articles on
relationships, sex, health, careers, self-improvement,
celebrities, fashion, and beauty. the largest grocery chain in
the United States, used to cover up Cosmopolitan at
checkout stands because of complaints about sexually
inappropriate headlines.
• Cosmopolitan has 64 international editions worldwide, and
are published in 35 languages, with distribution in more than
100 countries making Cosmopolitan the largest-selling
young women's magazine in the world
6. Impact of the internet on Magazine
• Magazines have had to expand on to using social media, and websites to stay relevant.
• The first online only magazine Salon, hit the web in 1995
• In the first half of 2014, UK consumer magazines lost almost one million print sales, with
some titles like NME down 28% on the previous year.
• Social media allows a more circulated perspective on the productions of magazines.
• Ig,sc,twitter allow a behind the scenes look with some of our favourite celebrities which
keeps consumers interested.
• Amount of advertisement has increased, famous brands team up with magazine to
increase popularity for both brands, e.g. channel will be advertised in cosmopolitan.
