         in Water, Environment and Infrastructure

                  www.unesco-ihe.org
MISSION & VISION

UNESCO-IHE envisions a world in
which people manage their water and
environmental resources in a
sustainable manner, and in which all
sectors of society can enjoy the
benefits of basic services.

Mission of the Institute is to contribute
to the education and training of
professionals and to further develop
the capacity of sector organisations
and knowledge centres in the fields of
water, the environment and
infrastructure, in developing countries
and countries in transition.
WHO WE ARE
& WHAT WE
DO
UNESCO-IHE is the largest
international post-graduate water
education facility in the world. The
institute confers fully accredited MSc
degrees and promotes PhDs.

The Institute carries out numerous
research and capacity development
projects throughout the world.

Since 1957 the Institute has provided
post-graduate education to more than
14,500 water professionals from over
160 countries, the vast majority from
the developing world.
CORE
ACTIVITIES
UNESCO AND WATER
UNESCO is the largest body within the United Nations system
dealing with the most comprehensive range of water activities.

UNESCO’s water activities rest on three pillars:
2. International Hydrological Programme (research)
3. UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (capacity development)
4. Secretariat of the World Water Assessment Programme (data)

In 2003 IHE Delft became a UNESCO Category 1
Institute. It belongs to the Science Division, Natural
Science Sector. Within UNESCO the Institute is
                                   responsible for tertiary water education.

Financially the Institute operates under the
responsibility of the IHE Foundation. Overall
responsibility falls under the UNESCO-IHE Governing
                                   Board.
EDUCATION
       UNESCO-IHE offers a wide
                range of accredited
         educational programmes.
           These are designed for
      engineers, social and natural
          scientists and managers
              working in the water,
                  environment and
             infrastructure sectors.
MASTERS
PROGRAMME

            UNESCO-IHE offers 4 accredited
            International Master of Science
programmes, with a total of 21
            specialisations.

            The MSc programmes are meant
            for professionals who want to
deepen their expertise, and in the
            meantime wish to gain substantial
insight into the global water agenda.
JOINT
  PROGRAMMES
 The development of joint educational
 programmes with partner institutes is
one of the cornerstones of the
Institute’s policy to serve the water
     sector with good quality, relevant
education and training at a scale
                 required by the sector.

Joint programmes are based on a
         form of credit transfer systems
between the (two) institutes and a
   joint responsibility in delivering part
          of the educational programme.

RESEARCH
      Research is a vital component
        of UNESCO-IHE’s mission.
            The Institute’s research
              activities focus on and
        contribute to the knowledge
         base concerning the water
        environment, and therefore
        complement its other major
          activities – education and
             capacity development.
RESEARCH
THEMES

 • Water Security
 • Environmental Integrity
 • Urbanisation
 • Water Management and Governance
 • Information and Communication Systems
PHD
PROGRAMME
Just under 130 PhD fellows from
            around the world are currently
            enrolled in water-related research.

            PhD fellows do scientific research,
            often with conclusions that directly
            influence their region.

            They participate in problem-focused
            and solution-oriented research on
            development issues. This results in
            an inspiring research environment.
CAPACITY
 DEVELOPMENT
          UNESCO-IHE provides capacity development
services to knowledge institutes and water sector
                        organizations around the world.

Through these operations, the Institute increases its
global impact and helps to build sustainable
                                           organisations.

These organisations will be equipped to properly
manage water resources and deliver water services
                                    to all communities.

     Services include institutional development projects,
                  tailor-made training and policy advice.

Need for a global campus
1. We have reached our physical limits in Delft
2. The entire World needing water education

3. Bring Delft to the World then and create a
   system/network of UNESCO-IHEs as mirrors
4. Connect them through the provision of the same
