• The term is believed to come from the military "beware
before", which an artilleryman about to fire would yell alerting

• One of tennis’s iconic rivalries, X and Y were the two
dominant women's players in the early 1990s. X had been No.
1 from 1987 to 1990, and Y was No. 1 in 1991 and 1992.
They were at their peaks in 1992 and 1993, meeting in the
finals in three of four consecutive Grand Slam tournaments:
the 1992 French Open, 1992 Wimbledon and 1993 Australian
Open. Y won the 1992 U.S. Open in the fourth major in that
span when X was upset in the quarterfinals.
• Tragically, it was this intense rivalry that led to an
incident(aimed to help restore X’s world no 1 ranking) that
disrupted Y’s career prematurely in 1993.
• Following the incident, Y did not play a match for two-and-a-
half years and won just one more Grand Slam title in her
career, the 1996 Australian Open.

• In January 1995, an away match against Crystal Palace, X was
sent off by the referee for a kick on Palace defender Richard Shaw
after Shaw had pulled his shirt. As he was walking towards the
tunnel, X launched a 'kung-fu' style kick into the crowd, directed at
Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons, a fan who had run down 11
rows of stairs to confront and shout abuse at him. X followed the
infamous kick with a series of punches.
• As well as the inevitable disciplinary action from his club and the
Football Association, X was also faced with a criminal charge of
assault. At a press conference called later, X gave what is perhaps
his most famous quotation. X said, in a slow and deliberate manner:
