4 Common 
Mistakes To Avoid 
On your first call 
with the client
I used to freak out when I 
got a call from a client
I didn’t know what to say
I didn’t know how much 
should I ask for
I didn’t know how to make a 
good impression
But Hell - 
Nailing this call can 
pay the rent!
So I learned to take it 
like a boss.
Here are 4 mistakes you can 
avoid on that first call:
1 
Take the call in a 
noisy place
Don’t do it in a bus 
station or at the mall
Be A Pro 
take the call in a quiet place, 
sit down and take notes
2 
Jump into bed 
without foreplay
Before you talk business try to 
understand who’s your client
How did he get your 
number?
from another client?
on LinkedIn?
Maybe on Facebook?
Or Instagram?
Tinder?
Yellow Pages?
Try to break the ice, find a 
common interest you are 
both sharing
Remember: 
your client is wondering if 
you’re fun to work with. And 
you should too!

Too much talking, not 
enough listening
Did you hear the cliché - 
“The client is always right”?
Your client heard it too
So do less talking 
and more listening
Learn as much as possible 
about your client, you’ll need 
it later on
Ask him and listen:
What is this project all 
about?
Who is it for?
What is the timeline?
Try to understand: 
Does it sound like a good 
fun project?
Let the client talk as much 
as he wants
If he’s not much of a talker, 
ask him questions to make 
him give you more info

Talk money on 
the first call
The client asks: 
“How much would it cost me?”
Don’t freak out 
Everything is fine
Because you shouldn’t talk 
money on this call.
Explain to your client that you 
are a pro, and you need to sit 
down to do your math
Tell him you want to give him an 
awesome offer that is attractive 
both for him and you
He’ll respect that, and you 
will end up the call with the 
ball in your court
That’s it.
