METTA BHAVANA is the Meditation   on Loving-Kindness METTA BHAVANA   既是修习慈爱禅
The Buddha gave a Discourse on Loving-Kindness ( The discourse is the Karaniya Sutta …in Sutta Nipata 1.8 ) While the Buddha was staying at Savatthi, a band of monks, having received subjects of meditation from the Master, proceeded to a forest to spend the rainy season (vassana). The tree deities inhabiting this forest were worried by their arrival, as they had to descend from tree abodes and dwell on the ground. They hoped, however, the monks would leave soon; but finding that the monks would stay the vassana period of three months, harassed them in diverse ways, during the night, with the intention of scaring them away.
佛陀对慈爱的开示 (慈爱经  经集 ....... 1.8) 一 时,佛 在舍 卫 国 。雨安居时,一群比丘依佛陀 的指示,到一座森林修行。 森林里的树灵对比丘们的到来受到了困扰,因为他们被逼从树上搬到地下住。 他们希望,比丘们很快便会离开。 不过,当他们知道比丘们将在雨安居期间住上三个月时, 在晚上,便使用多种的方法来骚扰以致吓走比丘们。
Living under such conditions being impossible, the monks went to the Master and informed him of their difficulties. Thereon the Buddha instructed them in the Metta Sutta and advised their return equipped with this Sutta for their protection. The monks went back to the forest, and practicing the instruction conveyed, permeated the whole atmosphere with their radiant thoughts of Metta or loving-kindness. The deities so affected by this power of love, henceforth allowed them to meditate in peace.
在此情况下,比丘们实在无法修炼。 于是他们回去禀告世尊他们的苦楚。 因此,佛陀教导比丘们唱诵慈爱经。 有了爱心就配备了保护作用。 佛陀吩咐比丘们回到原处。 回到原来的森林,比丘们依照佛陀的指导唱诵慈爱经。 慈爱经发挥了力量,森林四周弥漫了慈爱。 树灵们深受感动,因此也让比丘们进行他们的禅修。
What is METTA ? Metta is… Loving-Kindness Goodwill Friendliness Benevolence Concord Love 什么是  Metta   ? Metta  包含着 慈爱 亲善 友谊  慷慨  和睦  爱
In Metta, there is a strong wish for the happiness and welfare of oneself and others. The heart opens unconditionally encompassing all that is. 慈爱的涵义是深深的祝福他人也祝福自己。 将大爱的心无条件的打开。
Metta is devoid of self-interest.  One with Metta has the attitude of a friend who wants to give to another the best to further his or her well-being . 慈爱心是无私的。 有慈爱的人会将最好的给予他人 也希望他人会越来越好。
Just as a mother gives her own life to protect her child, so Metta only gives and never wants anything in return. 就如母亲会牺牲自己的生命来保护自己的孩子。有慈爱的心只有给予而不会祈望回报。
The 11 Benefits of Metta Bhavana The 11 Benefits of Metta Bhavana 1  One sleeps happily. 睡得安稳 培 育 慈 爱 能 获 得 十 一 种 利 益
2  One wakes up happily. 睡 醒 时 精 神 舒 畅
3  One has no bad dreams. 不 做 恶 梦
4  One is dear to human beings. 受人敬爱
5  One is dear to non-human beings . 非 人 也 敬 爱
6  One is protected by the gods. 天 神 护 卫
7  One’s countenance  is radiant. 仪态安祥
8  Fire, poison and weapons  do not affect one.  武器火毒不能侵害
9  One’s mind concentrates quickly. 心易入定
10  One dies without bewilderment. 死 时 心 不 颠 倒
11  If one develops no further, one will reach at least to the Brahma World. 今生若未证得罗汉果也将能生在梵天界
Metta Bhavana – Guidelines 1 We can spend some minutes a day on Metta Bhavana, sending thoughts of loving-kindness to all beings throughout the world. 修习慈爱禅 指导  1 每天花几分钟,散播慈爱予世界上的一切众生。
Metta Bhavana – Guidelines 2 1 Sit in a relaxed posture on the floor or a cushion. (cross-legged, semi-lotus or lotus position ) 2 Keep your back straight. 3 You may close your eyes. 4 Breathe in and out softly and naturally. 5 Allow your thoughts to dwell upon loving-kindness and compassion. 修习慈爱禅 指导  2 ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Metta Bhavana – Guidelines 3 First, radiate thoughts of loving-kindness to yourself. Charge your heart and mind with thoughts such as : “May I be free from harm and danger. May I be free from mental suffering. May I be free from physical suffering. May I be well, happy and peaceful.” 修习慈爱禅 指导  3 开始时,把慈爱传送给自己 。我们可以用下面的词句作观想让身心升起慈爱感。 “ 愿我免受伤害与危险。 愿我无内心的痛苦。 愿我无身体的痛苦。 愿我安好 , 快乐与安宁。
Metta Bhavana – Guidelines 4 You may repeat such thoughts of Metta until your concentration and calmness grow. 修习慈爱禅  指导  4 持续重复慈爱的意念直到定力渐深,心神安宁。
Metta Bhavana – Guidelines 5 Next, radiate thoughts of loving-kindness to your parents and other family members as follows: May they be free from harm and danger. May they be free from mental suffering. May they be free from physical suffering. May they be well, happy and peaceful.” 修习慈爱禅  指导  5 接下来 ,  根据下面的词句把慈爱心散播给父母亲与其他家庭成员。 愿他们免受伤害与危险。 愿他们无内心的痛苦。 愿他们无身体的痛苦。 愿他们安好 , 快乐与安宁   
Metta Bhavana – Guidelines 6 Radiate thoughts of loving-kindness to all your teachers and friends repeating mentally and fervently the four lines as before. 修习慈爱禅  指导  6 心中热诚地重复前面的词句,散播慈爱心给你全部的老师与朋友。
Metta Bhavana – Guidelines 7 Radiate thoughts of loving-kindness to your enemies or people who are negative towards you, repeating mentally and fervently the four lines as before. 修习慈爱禅  指导  7 心中热诚的重复前面的词句,散播慈爱心给你的敌人与讨厌你的人。
Metta Bhavana – Guidelines 8 Lastly, radiate your thoughts of loving-kindness to all beings in the whole world, universe and all the realms of existence, repeating mentally and fervently the four lines as before. 修习慈爱禅  指导  8 最后,心中热诚地重复前面的词句,散播慈爱心给这个世界,整个宇宙与众道所有的生灵。

  • 4. The Buddha gave a Discourse on Loving-Kindness ( The discourse is the Karaniya Sutta …in Sutta Nipata 1.8 ) While the Buddha was staying at Savatthi, a band of monks, having received subjects of meditation from the Master, proceeded to a forest to spend the rainy season (vassana). The tree deities inhabiting this forest were worried by their arrival, as they had to descend from tree abodes and dwell on the ground. They hoped, however, the monks would leave soon; but finding that the monks would stay the vassana period of three months, harassed them in diverse ways, during the night, with the intention of scaring them away.

  • 6. Living under such conditions being impossible, the monks went to the Master and informed him of their difficulties. Thereon the Buddha instructed them in the Metta Sutta and advised their return equipped with this Sutta for their protection. The monks went back to the forest, and practicing the instruction conveyed, permeated the whole atmosphere with their radiant thoughts of Metta or loving-kindness. The deities so affected by this power of love, henceforth allowed them to meditate in peace.

May they be free from mental suffering. May they be free from physical suffering.
