Emergence of Web 2.0 Tools
• Web 2.0 tools are rapidly becoming tools of
  choice for a growing body of classroom
  educators.

• Web 1.0 has largely been a one-way medium.

• In 2004, the web became a two-way street, and
  a group of new web tools began to appear.

• By 2007, a second generation of the Web had
  taken over – Web 2.0!
Characteristics of Web 2.0 Tools
• Web-based applications can be accessed from anywhere.

• Simple applications solve specific problems.

• Value lies in content, not the software used to display
  content.

• Data can be readily shared.

• Students & educators can access and use tools on their
  own.

• Social tools encourage people to create, collaborate, edit,
  categorize, exchange, & promote information.
Effecting Teaching & Learning
• What do today’s graduates need to be
  proficient in both core subject and 21st
  century content and skills?

• Web 2.0 tools energize and motivate
  students, but teaching and learning strategies
  are equally, or more important.

• Uploading assignments to a class website.

• E-mail questions to their teachers.

• Work on assignments with distant peers using instant
  messaging, online discussion forums, and wikis.

• Enables students with disabilities to participate more fully
  in classroom instruction.

• Students are more independent, interaction, & engaged
  socially.
Importance of Web 2.0 Tools
• Students must master vital 21st century skills!

• Students must be able to:
  – Research using the Internet
  – Assess information
  – Work collaboratively
  – Communicate effectively
  – Think critically and creatively

Emergence of Web 2.0 Tools • Web 2.0 tools are rapidly becoming tools of choice for a growing body of classroom educators. • Web 1.0 has largely been a one-way medium. • In 2004, the web became a two-way street, and a group of new web tools began to appear. • By 2007, a second generation of the Web had taken over – Web 2.0!
  • 3. Characteristics of Web 2.0 Tools • Web-based applications can be accessed from anywhere. • Simple applications solve specific problems. • Value lies in content, not the software used to display content. • Data can be readily shared. • Students & educators can access and use tools on their own. • Social tools encourage people to create, collaborate, edit, categorize, exchange, & promote information.
  • 4. Effecting Teaching & Learning • What do today’s graduates need to be proficient in both core subject and 21st century content and skills? • Web 2.0 tools energize and motivate students, but teaching and learning strategies are equally, or more important.

Impact on Learning • Uploading assignments to a class website. • E-mail questions to their teachers. • Work on assignments with distant peers using instant messaging, online discussion forums, and wikis. • Enables students with disabilities to participate more fully in classroom instruction. • Students are more independent, interaction, & engaged socially.
  • 7. Importance of Web 2.0 Tools • Students must master vital 21st century skills! • Students must be able to: – Research using the Internet – Assess information – Work collaboratively – Communicate effectively – Think critically and creatively
