Editor's Notes
The hackathon has its origin in software and hardware engineering, but the concept is now also successfully applied in other industries for developing innovative solutions.
Hackathon is an event lasting from few hours to few days where people come together to find a solution to a presented problem by means of teams competing to produce and present the best project that meets the predefined criteria.
The participants work in small groups in a unique environment that encourages creative thinking and leads to surprisingly innovative new concepts, ideas, and prototypes. The result of the hackathon is a finished prototype for an innovative product, service or business model.
1. Which problems/challenges should be solved?
2. groups start working
3. Identification of needs and problems
4. Idea generation
5. Pitching
6. selection: the winner is…
In the face of the evolving COVID-19 crisis, the use of hackathons demonstrate the possibilities to quickly crowdsource ideas and solutions
Finding a complete list in covid-related hackathons is not easy, the information is fragmented on different sites. Garage 48 has started Hack the crisis therefore it is involved in many hackathons and on their website they have a long list, at the moment the most exhaustive. Although not complete, it gives a downward idea of the spread of this type of event

3 examples on line hackathon:
#BuildforCOVID19 Global Online Hackathon: This hackathon is organised by the World Health Organisation and is supported by big tech partners - AWS, Facebook, Giphy, Microsoft, Pinterest, Salesforce, Slack, TikTok, Twitter and WeChat - to create innovative ideas to combat the COVID-19 pandemic
The Global Hack is a global initiative which unites the Hack the Crisis movement and the 40+ hackathons put up in the frames of this movement. The core initiative comes from the team who organised the very first hackathon just in 6 hours on 13-15 of March in Estonia and are passionate about solving the huge ongoing crisis that concerns everyone at the moment (the people are from Garage48, Accelerate Estonia, Guaana). BUT this is truly a global effort and movement involving communities and organizers from all over the world.
EuvsVirus - pan-European hackathon: The European Commission, led by the European Innovation Council and in close collaboration with the EU member states
