Several industries have a vast catalog of products, often with several different options to chose from and highly customizable products.
The product configurator will enable your salespeople to have a smoother experience when selecting the different options available for the customer, go through them and ensure they are happy with their choice.
It will also allow customers to choose for themselves with a much more enjoyable experience configuring the products they are purchasing.
All of this while keeping your product catalog manageable and avoiding having to create all the different combinations you might need.
Setting up your variants is really simple and straightforward. We just need to create your different attributes and values, select how we will want them displayed (as radio buttons, selectables or colors) and then whether we will want the variants in our catalog, if we want to add them once they’re sold (dynamically) or if we never want them created.
Once you have your attributes and values, then we add them unto your products.
Allowing customers or salespeople to create different combinations on the fly can get you in trouble if they end up selecting a specific combination that is not really possible for you to make or part of your inventory. When you’re selecting between different car models, the premium one will probably have leather seats but that doesn’t mean you can select the same colors as the cloth seat versions. When you’re building your own PC, some components are bound to not be compatible between them, that is why it’s important to be able to exclude certain combinations
By clicking on configure variants inside a product, we can set up additional costs for different attribute values. I.e. A large table is bound to be sold for a higher price than a small one. This way if the large attribute is selected, $15 will be added to the price.
When a salesperson adds a product with the product configurator enabled to a sales order, you will see this popup that will allow him to select from the different attributes for the product
Well I’m not really sure if 5 times, maybe more, but it's definitely a lot faster to be able to input several different combinations at once to your Sales Order, particularly for certain businesses who sell a lot of different options at once, that is why we have the Variant Grid entry. This will allow us to add from the different combinations just by selecting the quantities from the grid popup. Clicking confirm will add the products in the following way..

As you can see from this image, the product configurator also integrates perfectly with your Odoo website and Ecommerce. Just like you would do on Amazon or other big e commerce platforms your customers can browse through your online catalog, select a product they are interested in and then configure it on the fly before adding it to their cart.
This smooth experience allows customers to select the option they like the most without you having to show too many options on your catalog.
We cannot leave manufacturing out of the equation as we want to simplify things throughout our whole workflow.
When manufacturing a product, we will want to consume specific components depending on the variant sold.
There’s no point in consuming purple paint for a red door.
That’s why in our Bills of Materials, we can select what variant to use a component for.
An exciting new feature is the inclusion of the product configurator in Odoo’s Point of Sale. By selecting the product configurator option, you can now configure your products from the same screen so that you can offer customizable products easily from your stores and registers.
Let’s say you have the Odoo POS setup in a restaurant, its fairly straightforward and has a lot of useful features, then one of your customers orders a yummy Rib Eye Steak.
Now your waiters can select directly from the product how that steak will be cooked and what side’s to add to the steak, then that configuration or variant will be sent directly to the kitchen, streamlining the ordering process even further for you.
