4. John Ashbrey
born in 1927, is the only American poet to win all three major
annual literary prizes -- the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book
Critics Circle Award, and the National Book Award -- for one
book, "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror" (1975). Among the most
recent of his 16 collections of poetry: "Shadow Train," (1981),
Selected Poems" (1985), "April Galleons" (1987), And the Stars
Were Shining" (1993), and "Can You Hear, Bird," (1995) which
includes "Sleepers Awake." John Ashbery is Charles P. Stevenson,
Jr., Professor of Languages and Literature at Bard College.

5. John Berryman
(1914-1972), won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1965 for "77
Dream Songs." In 1968, "His Toy, His Dream, His Rest" won the
National Book Award for Poetry. Both works were incorporated
into his major work, "The Dream Songs," published in 1969, the
year John Berryman won the Bollingen Prize for Poetry. In
addition to several volumes of criticism, he published "Stephen
Crane," a biography; and a novel, "Recovery." His "Collected
Poems: 1937-1971" was published in 1989.

6. Frank Bidart
was born in 1939. He has published four books: "Golden Gate"
(1973), "The Book of the Body" (1977), "The Sacrifice" (1983)
and "In the Western Night: Collected Poems 1965-1990" (1990).
Frank Bidart teaches at Wellesley College. "Love Incarnate" will
be included in his forthcoming collection, "Desire," to be
published in October 1997.

7. Louise Bogan
(1987-1970) was poetry critic for "The New Yorker" for 38 years
beginning in 1931. During her lifetime, she won almost every
major poetry prize, including the Bollingen Prize (1955) and two
Guggenheim fellowships. Her first volume of poetry, "Body of
This Death" was published in 1923; "Collected Poems, 1923-
1953" was published in 1954; "The Blue Estuaries: Poems, 1923-
1968" appeared in 1968. Her book, "Journey Around My Room:
The Autobiography of Louise Bogan," was posthumously
published in 1981.

8. Joseph Brodsky
(1940-1996), winner of the 1987 Nobel Prize for Literature, was
born in Leningrad and began writing poetry at the age of 18. In
1964, he was sentenced to five years in exile in the Arkhangelsk
region of Northern Russia. His sentence was commuted two
years later because of internal and international protests. In
1972, Joseph Brodsky became an involuntary exile from his
native country. After brief stays in Vienna and London, he went
to the United States; he became Poet Laureate of the United
States in 1991.
