Every Originality Report provides instructors with the opportunity to teach their students proper citation methods as well as to safeguard their students' academic integrity”. 7. 7.

GradeMark offers features which allows the user to mark and grade any assignment via a web browser.

Assignment needs to be submitted through the Turnitin service, regardless of whether or not it is sent for plagiarism checking.

There is no need to download assignments as mark-up is carried out online and supports all popular internet browsers.

Students can read marked work on screen or print the feedback. Students also have the ability to save the original document upload, in its original format and as a PDF file.

 8. 8.

Can GradeMark replace the traditional paper and pen based system of marking up and returning assignments?

 16. 16.

Improved consistency for marking and comments

Improved speed and transfer of data (no downloading, emailing across files, re-uploading etc)

Technical issues reduced. ie. problems with different versions of MS Word (esp. MS Office 2007) and track changes.

Easier for end user to view comments (standardised and logical)

No longer relies on an email system that has provided issues in the past.

Future developments, including peer to peer assessment tools, might be of interest.

 17. 17. Student Comments

What more could be given to support you in using this system?

I can't suggest anything, it was easy.

“ the format is easier to read, however the old method wasn’t difficult. ”

“ there was an improvement in the quality of comments and feedback ”

 18. 18. Student Comments

As a feedback tool it was relatively simple to use and access comments from the marker. The document had changed slightly (portrait/landscape etc) but this didn't really matter, after all I was mostly interested in (a) Had I passed, and (b) How I could improve the next one.

 19. 19.

“ Would see great use for customised rubrics. I just need time to set one up ”

What benefits does the GradeMark offer you?

Robust storage of assignments, plagiarism checking

Is this a system you would be keen to use in the future?

Yes

Do you think this system would save you time in the long run?

Yes. I especially like the clipboard

How easy was it to use this system?

Easy

 20. 20.

The original document had a number of tables inserted that did not display in the correct alignment when in grademark.

Not sure how the students submission can be anonymised as per Uni regs and can two markers mark the paper without seeing each others comments?

 21. 21.

Since TurnitinUK is profile-driven, this means when a student submits a paper, it is automatically linked to their profile, and the tutor will therefore be aware of whose work he is viewing. This clearly is an issue for anonymous marking.

Following consultation with Turnitin UK Support and an increased demand for anonymous marking, iParadigms announced this feature in February 2009:

Since this announcement our department will be looking at the GradeMark with more emphasis.

Issues remain over how 2 nd and 3 rd markers use this system to collaborate to mark an assignment. We currently email original work to these markers.

 22. 22.

Request 2 nd and 3 rd marker access options (?)

Evaluation of process (BOS) – both markers and end users (students)

Dissemination of findings and recommendations

 23. 23.

… in terms of ease of use, speed and targeted comments, Grademark does represent an impressive electronic means for marking that eliminates repetition, organises the tasks and automatically enters marks. In Student Evaluation of Teaching surveys students have expressed a high degree of satisfaction with this method. Grademark may not represent the final word in electronic assessment but it is an impressive step forward and gives a real possibility of creating a paper ‘lite’ office .

Henderson, P. 2008.
