Ahead of the big-bang sale across ecommerce platforms in the coming weeks,
marketplaces are courting sellers through multiple schemes and incentives to reach
their targets for on-boarding sellers by the year-end, and prepare them for possible
hiccups while processing such large volumes of orders.Online marketplaces are also
trying to ensure that this Diwali is a happy one for merchants by giving up on
commissions and reducing the pay cycle for sellers.
“We have been receiving calls from different non-banking financial companies
(NBFCs) which have tied up with marketplaces extending loans to us at market
rates.Snapdeal has also reduced its payment cycle from over a 10-day period to
over a 6-day period to ensure that we can rotate the money for procurement,“ said
Sumanth Lingala, an electronics reseller who works with multiple marketplaces.
Online marketplace ShopClues is not charging any commissions for new sellers on
the portal.

“The zero-commissions scheme will apply to all new merchant signups and will last
during October and November. The merchants are also being encouraged to drive
traf ic to their own webstores which run on ShopClues platform backend for easy
management of traffic during the festive season,“ said Sanjay Sethi, CEO of
ShopClues. He added that in October and November, the platform will be adding
close to 60,000 new merchants.
“We will be incentivising sellers who provide timely deliveries and better customer
experience. We have tied up with service providers as part of the F1 Stop to
connect sellers to them on a common platform, Turbo Charge programme with a
30-day free trial period for seller,“ said Ankit Nagori, chief business officer at
Flipkart.
“We started the year with 12,000 merchants and have scaled it up to 42,000. In the
upcoming festive season, we hope to add 10,000 more,“ he said.
Flipkart had reportedly stocked its warehouses to capacity a week back with
products from sellers for shorter and easy fulfillment.

Paytm has also indicated that it will not charge any commission on specific
categories.
“We are looking at a few categories on which we wouldn't be charging
commissions. We are going to run four-day special campaigns around
merchant sign-up from October 14 onwards. As part of the campaign, new
merchants will be able to avail of services like cataloging, seller financing,
etc., for free. We are looking to add 15,000 new merchants in October,“ said
Renu Satti, vice-president at SME business and operations at Paytm.
The festive season -October and November -typically accounts for one-third
of the annual sales for the ecommerce platforms. In order to ensure that
merchants don't run out of inventory, marketplaces have been handing out
projection of volumes expected, hiring temporary fulfillment personnel and
extending capital to sellers to prepare them for the event.
