Patients struggled to get admission in overcrowded hospitals as this year's dengue
outbreak headed to be one of the two worst seen in the capital. Latest official
figures reveal the disease claimed five lives and affected 1,872 people even as the
peak dengue period (Sep tember-October) lay ahead. Municipal corporations said,
in the past week alone, three people had died and at least 613 new cases reported
in the city. Delhi's worst dengue outbreak of 2010 had seen 1,933 cases in the same
period.
Experts said the government's unpreparadness had exacerbated the crisis, result
ing in shortage of hospital beds. Patients, even those who can pay , were finding it
difficult to get a bed in hospitals.
After the government's diktat to not turn away anybody , some hospitals said they
were putting two or three children on one bed while others claimed to have put
beds even in verandahs. To meet the manpower needs, the Delhi Gov ernment also
ordered cancellation of leave of all doctors and paramedical staff.

TOI checked with major hospitals, both government and private-run, on Monday to
find nearly all running full.
Dr Y K Sarin, medical superintendent of Lok Nayak hospital, said they had created a
separate fever clinic and dengue ward with over 75 beds but even this was proving
insufficient. “I have asked the Central Procurement Agency for purchase of
additional 250 beds,“ he said.
At AIIMS, Safdarjung and Hindu Rao hospitals, doctors said several patients had to
be put on stretchers in corridors outside the emergency ward as there was little
space inside.“Our emergency wing sees 400-500 patients daily . Over the last few
days, this has gone up to even 700, mainly due to dengue patients. We cannot
admit everyone as we are short of beds,“ said an AIIMS doctor.
Private hospitals such as Apollo, Sir Ganga Ram, BLK, Saroj Super-Specialty , Fortis
hospitals in Vasant Kunj and Nehru Place too said they did not have vacant beds.
They , however, claimed no needy patient was being turned away .

“Normally , we get 100 patients in the emergency daily .But due to the
dengue rush, the numbers have gone up to 250.Of this, 25%-30% are
admitted. We have used every inch of space in the hospital to accommodate
patients,“ said Dr Sudhir Joseph, director of St Stephen's hospital.
He said at least seven dengue deaths have taken in their hospital. “Official
figures do not reflect clearly the situation on ground,“ Dr Joseph added.
Experts said that the government has woken up to the crisis following the
suicide by a couple who could not find a bed for their seven-year-old child
suffering from dengue.
“My mother, a cancer survivor, has been suffering from dengue for three
days. I really struggled to find a bed even in a private hospital. She is in the
ICU of a top hospital but it is costing nearly Rs 20,000 per day,“ said Ritesh
Verma, a resident of Punjabi Bagh.

Nikhil Kumar, a resident of Malviya Nagar, said smaller nursing homes are
milking the situation. “I got my friend admitted in a private nursing home
because there were no beds at AIIMS. They ran a battery of tests on him,
kept him on intravenous fluid and even administered platelet twice a day .
The bill was Rs 42,000. I know people who have spent above Rs 1 lakh at big
private hospitals,“ he said.
A senior health official at the directorate of health services said the situation
could worsen since September and October are the peak season for the
disease.
“Several factors including temperature, moisture and rain contribute to the
rise in dengue cases. Health is not a key issue for people and that's why even
politicians wake up only when there is an emergency like this,“ said Dr
Vishwa Mohan Katoch, former director general of the Indian Council of
Medical Research.
