Analysis Of La Lengua De Las Mariposas
La Lengua de las Mariposas, directed by JosГ© Luis Cuerda, is a marvelous and powerful film that explores Spain's past through the lens of education.
Cuerda does this by exhibiting the contrast between the 1931–1936 Republic and the dictatorships that ruled the country just before and after the
Spanish Civil War through the relationship between Moncho, a young boy, and Don Gregorio, his teacher. The film depicts the Republic's aims for a
liberal education and the pressures this produced within the more conservative region of society. Overall this film portrays both the freedom of this
short period in Spain's history and the beginning of Franco's oppressive dictatorship. There are many layers of themes that are subtlety imbedded into
the film. The political theme of the film is a truly intriguing portrayal of life in Spain during this tense time. The underlying message of the film is one
of defending the freedom of expression. It explores the importance of gaining knowledge through one's own personal experiences. Culture is used as a
pathway to achieve personal freedom. In addition, the film attempts to break some of the taboos surrounding an adequate education, focusing instead
on this education through experience. Observation is used as a way to awaken the senses. Another theme that was imbedded in the film was childhood
with the inclusion of a vast number of topics. The film not only contains scenes that deal with war but it includes scenes that include family, love, and

Socialist Party's Transition
The Socialist Party's contributions to the transition played a major role in these negotiated pacts. The PSOE's original party platform was Marxism and
democratic rupture. Democratic rupture declared the removal of remnants of Francoism from the government that included the 'bunker.' Felipe
GonzГЎlez and the Vice–Secretary General Alfonso Guerra led the change in the PSOE's change in policy. GonzГЎlez, Guerra, and their supporters
within the socialist party argued the party's slogan should not use Marxism. For GonzГЎlez, the success of SuГЎrez and his policies on amnesty, free
elections, and the PCE's legalization led to his decision that the PSOE needed to become more moderate. SuГЎrez's social conservative polices also
worked against the PSOE... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The transition was an event that took place in Spain. The transitional period's international significance was unlike the international context of the
Spanish Civil War. Still, the U.S. and the world understood how significant the death of Franco affected Western Europe and the creation and
ratification of the 1978 Constitution. For example, the U.S. State Department Central files at the National Archives has reports of the Embassy in
Madrid. These reports, along with FRUS, had the attention of a superpower to the impact of the Spanish transition. Analysis of the transition in an
international context in important because of the comparisons made to Spain's transition to other authoritarian dictatorships transitioning to democracy
in the twentieth century. Spanish newspaper publications played a major role in the transition thanks to an increase push for the freedom of the press.
El PaГs and Cambio 16 had significant and numerous reports on the events since its first issue during the transition. El Socialista, the socialist party's
newspaper, had a vital role in the PSOE's platform that led to their victory in

Speech : ' Devil 's Island '
Title: "Devil's Island" General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Alcatraz. Thesis: This morning, I am going to tell
you about the purpose of Alcatraz, some of the famous criminals that were sent there, escape attempts, and the living conditions in the prison.
Introduction I.Attention Grabber: Have any of you, if you are open to admit it, ever been to prison? A.Well, I have, but not in the way you would
think. B.I went voluntarily on a tour and the prison was actually Alcatraz. II.Credibility and Goodwill: I have always been interested in historic
landmarks and structures, and Alcatraz has always been on the top of my list. A.Two summers ago, my family and I went on vacation to California,
and one of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
B.But, because of the island was isolated from other land, and because it had ice cold waters and huge waves, they decided it could be used as a
place to hold captives of war. 1.A large cell house was built to hold them, and it started out with only twenty–six captives, but came to hold over
four–hundred and fifty. 2.But, operational costs eventually became too high, and in 1934, the Army decided to close the prison, and ownership went
to the Department of Justice. C.During this time, mobs and gangs were on the rise. 1.Alcatraz became the new home for these criminals, which was
a home that no one would ever want live in. 2.It was remodeled and built so that no one could escape, or so they thought, which I'll get to in a
minute. Transition: As I said, mobs and gangs were on the rise, and this led to the imprisonment of some of the most notorious gangsters. II.According
the therichest.com, Alcatraz housed the likes of Machine Gun Kelly and probably the most infamous of all, Al Capone. A.Machine Gun Kelley's
favorite weapon was the Thompson machine gun, hence the name Machine Gun Kelly. 1.He became known for kidnapping Charles F. Urschel, who
was a business tycoon in the oil business, and he collected a $200,000 ransom, which was close to $3,000,000 today. 2.He was eventually caught and
sent to Alcatraz. B.Al Capone was one of the first inmates sent to Alcatraz. 1.He ran the

The Concept of "Advanced Civilization" Led to the European...
During the European conquests of the 16th and 17th centuries, the concept of an advanced civilization was essential most of the time. This can be
supported by the strategic Spanish conquests, Portuguese exploration, and the Dutch trading empire.
To begin with, North and South America, which had existed in isolation for thousands of years, came into contact with the rest of the world via the
Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus. In 1492, he was sent by Spain to look for a route to India. Rather, Columbus came into contact with a
Caribbean island. This marked the beginning of Spanish invasion of the Americas, who were in search of gold. Perhaps the most profound Spanish
conquistadors were Hernan Cortez and Francisco Pizzaro, who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Incas had no knowledge of the wheel, arch construction, or writing, but they managed a society in the Andes. Pizzaro arrived with 180 men and
30 horses, and decided to meet with the ruler, Athualpa, under an agreement of having unarmed body guards. As the gold covered ruler agreed, he
was immediately stripped of his gold headband and one blast of his cannon and small army slaughtered the Inca warriors 50,000. Atuhualpa tried to
free himself by offering a 17ft by 22ft by 9ft room of gold. The Spanish took the offer, but still murdered Atuahulpa to show that they could not be
trusted so that others would abide by their rule. The contact between the Americas and the Old World began biological exchange of animals and foods
which greatly benefited trade.
Additionally, Vasco de Gama was a Portuguese explorer who discovered an ocean route to India, in 1498, by going under the tip of Africa, or Cape
of Good Hope. This way avoided conflicts with the Ottoman Turks and led one directly into the fast moving currents of the Indian Ocean. This plan
was carefully devised by skilled Portuguese mapmakers and navigators. Since this way was known, many rulers such as the Sultan of Manindi,
offered the Portugese captain a pilot to guide his ships to trade for spices, gems, and fine (cotton, paper, porcelain, silk, glass, carpets) textiles. The
Asian trading network, however were not interested in Portuguese goods such as iron

Holcomb Bridge Speeches
Good morning Robin,
For the past couple of weeks, the activity level for Suite #400 and #500 at Holcomb Bridge has been fairly "light". Personally speaking, this past
month has been a fairly active month for me, but the activity level specifically at 3867 Holcomb Bridge just hasn't been that great.
I've canvassed the surrounding area (within a half a mile) from 3867 Holcomb Bridge property and it seems like there are several "similar" types
of offices where the Landlord is asking "equal" to or slightly "less" amount per SF compared to 3867 Holcomb Bridge. However, even with the
slightly lower rates at several of these buildings, some of these spaces continue to remain in the market as "vacant" spaces. And some spaces have been

Descriptive Tourism
5 must–see top rated tourist attractions in Argentina
Argentina is a stunning country and it is one that should sit high on anyone's bucket list. There's a challenge, though, when planning a trip because the
country is so massive it's difficult to know where to start or end up. It's difficult to narrow the tourist attractions down to just 5 because there are so
many, but we dedicated ourselves to choosing the absolute best and here's what we came up with.
Please note: they're all so awesome we haven't put them in any particular order.
1. Perito Moreno Glacier
Another UNESCO site, and this one you will find in El Calafte, a small town which is home to Los Glaciares National Park. What's of interest here?
The Perito Moreno Glacier, not only is it the third largest fresh water reserve on the planet, it is also home to an 18 mile long ice formation.
The visitor center is just two hours from the town and from the center there's only a short walk to reach to glacier via a walking circuit. For the more
adventurous spirits out there... you can climb Perito Moreno! Yes, there are tours available from a quick hour walk on the surface of the ice to a five
hour trek. That's not all you will find at the park, though. There's also a 2 mile high mountain, Monte Fitz Roy, which is just as treacherous as Everest.
2. Ushuaia
Patagonia is well known for incredible landscapes, bragging massive stretches of plateaus and plains, made all the more dramatic by the backdrop of
the Andes. This southern hot spot also happens to feature Ushuaia – which just happens to be the most southern city in the world. It got its start in the
20th century as a penal colony, but now it's become the place to launch adventures. It's the starting point for trips around Cape Horn and kicking off
an Antartic adventure. It's fondly known as the end of the world and has a truly unique landscape that features woods, mountains, glaciers, and sea. It
sits at the very edge of Tierra del Fuego National Park. In fact, you'll want to visit the National Park, too, while you are in the area.
There are also two museums that shows the unique history of the area, and a lighthouse (built in 1884).

In the year of seventeen–ninety–nine (1799), Conrad Reed found a seventeen–pound gold nugget when he was fishing. His family used it as a door stop
for three years before they realized that it was a gold nugget! Once everyone found out that it was gold, they started looking for more gold in the
Little Meadow Creek that Conrad found the gold in. The creek was located on the family farm in Cabarrus County. When the rest of the family looked
for more of the gold, they found some more of it in the creek as well as some gold around the creek. All of the gold made Conrad's dad very wealthy!
Conrad's dad was named John Reed. The news of the gold being found spread very quickly. When people began to look for more gold, they found gold

California High Speed Rail
Looking at the California high speed rail project truly has shocked the public and makes them wonder if this is a great plan for California's
environment. "The current plan will connect San Francisco with Los Angeles cutting a six hour car ride down to two hours and forty
minutes"(Souza, 2011). The train running through Kings County will take out many dairies and cut even more in half. Making these cuts will be
hard for dairymen to get to their crops or feed their animals. Building the rail is a bad idea due to the fact; money will be taken from schools, it will
devastate the future of California's agriculture industry, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conclusion
If this high speed rail in California is built the school system will be at its bare minimums, will devastate the future of California's agriculture
industry, furthermore it will not produce long term steady jobs to boost the economy. Americans always want bigger and better things or the fast
paced life style. Is it better to have luxury when the state is at a time in crisis and can barely afford to stay running? Sometimes people rush into
things just because it is new or seems like a great idea. When voting for this high speed rail to come ripping through the heart of California Americans
need to think about the future and what is at stake. Schools keep students educated so they could go out and be successful person, agriculture feeds
California and produces jobs that feeds workers families. California is a great state and should not be torn apart by a train.

John Okada's No-No Boy
The United States of America a nation known for allowing freedom, equality, justice, and most of all a chance for immigrants to attain the American
dream. However, that "America" was hardly recognizable during the 1940's when President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, ordering
120,000 Japanese Americans to be relocated to internment camps. As for the aftermath, little is known beyond the historical documents and stories
from those affected. Through John Okada's novel, No–No Boy, a closer picture of the aftermath of the internment is shown through the events of the
protagonist, Ichiro. It provides a more human perspective that is filled with emotions and connections that are unattainable from an ordinary historical
document. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More importantly, it makes Ichiro loathe himself more because he feels as though being a No–no boy makes him incapable of being "American" since
he is not deserving or capable of walking around proudly like the veterans. Unlike the veterans, Ichiro finds himself unable to prove that he is
"American" which leaves him with his Japanese identity. However, it is that same Japanese identity that got him interned, imprisoned, harassed, and in
the position that he is in now. Above all, what is clearly visible is that there is not only a separation within the nation but a separation within the entire
Japanese community. The differences in Ichiro's family contributed to his self–hatred and seemingly lost identity. To him, he was the "emptiness
between the one and the other and could see flashes of the truth that was true for his parents and the truth that was true for his brother" (Okada, 19).
He did not want to be Japanese because he did not know the language and was consumed with anger and hatred towards his parents because even they
weren't any less Japanese even after living in America for thirty–five years, thus utterly rejecting America (Okada, 19). In addition, his mother's defiance
of the reality of Japan's loss in the war and their inability to go back to Japan as she hoped for, as well as his father's lack of control and courage only
increases his desire to not be Japanese. However, Ichiro's

Impassioned Love In Spain, By Neruda's War
The Way Spain Was expresses impassioned love for Spain as well as anguish for its abjection at the hands of Fascist forces. The poem is part of the
Third Residence, published in 1947, which expresses Neruda's artistic camaraderie; his love for Spanish poetry which he believes unites the coloniser
with its colony. It was written as an outraged reaction to the civil strife and political murders in Spain. It was inspired by Ruben Dario (1867 – 1916),
a Latin American poet who wrote politically charged verses. Neruda was livid and pained at the death of his friend, Garcia Lorca and a number of
other Republicans at the hands of anti–democratic Fascist forces. He tells us: "The most intense memories, perhaps, are those of my life in Spain...

The First line of the poem 'Jaut and dry Spain was' sums up the poet's suffering without any succor. Through a series of pictures and images the poet
captures the atmosphere of those days. In the second stanza of the poem the poet records his personal attitude towards Spain:

'How unto cry
out, unto the very soul
I love your barren soil and your rough bread,
Your stricken people'

Deep inside his heart the poet can still feel
the life that has disappeared. He still finds the essential Spain to be timeless which no political turmoil can ever change. He remembers the mineral
wealth of the country. Somehow, he feels, all this has been undone by a cruel and unfeeling god.
The poem presents a picture of Spain, historically
rich and glorious but torn by strife at that time. The poet mourns the glorious past but at the same time emphasizes with the suffering of its stricken
people. Silence and isolation are reiterated in the poem. The contrast inherent in the situation has been brought out by the description of the wine that is
both harsh and sweet, and again in the reference to the vineyards which are both delicate and

Essay God and Gold: Spanish Exploration
Spanish Exploration
Spanish exploration and settlement of the western hemisphere lasted from 1492 until 1898, from Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the loss of its
last colonies in the Spanish–American war. As with all major seafaring European nations, they were in pursuit of the fabled Northwest Passage, a direct
route to Asia. This was how Christopher Columbus stumbled upon the Americas, on his quest for this route. The Spanish were after more though,
specifically gold and spread of the Christian faith. With this page we will discuss multiple historical figures, places, and ideas that emphasized what the
Spanish found most important at the time, God and gold.

After a mutiny and less then fruitful journeys, Pizarro convinced the Spanish government to allow an expedition with the prospect of being the future
governor of the unclaimed land Peru (The Mariners' Museum, 2014). He made his way towards the city of Cajamarca in 1532, being allowed to
travel inland by the Incan emperor, Atahualpa, believing they were "children of the sun" (Black, 2005). At the city, Pizarro hosted a huge feast,
with many Inca nobles, including the emperor, attending. While at the feast, the Incan guests were rushed, killed, and the emperor taken hostage.
After chats, Atahualpa agreed to ransom himself by agreeing to fill a room, and when that was not enough, he doubled the offer. The final offer
consisting of over 3,000 cubic feet worth of gold and silver (The Mariners' Museum, 2014). Even after having to send their own troops out to help
collect all the riches from across the Incan empire, eventually his men returned with a staggering load of riches. After all was said and done, by
June 1533, Pizarro had 333lbs worth of gold and silver, a value of nearly 100 million US dollars (The Mariners' Museum, 2014). He sent his brother
to turn his 1/5 portion due to the Spanish Crown and was promptly reward with fame, fortune, and royal titles whereas Atahualpa was executed, but
not before he was converted. He still had to conquer Cuzco, the Capital of Peru. This would prove to be

The Beautiful Painting by Edward Hopper, House by the...
I. Description The painting, House by the Railroad, by Edward Hopper was completed in 1925. The house he painted was in the style of a Victorian
house. The house was built next to railroad tracks. He painted House by the Railroad with oil based paint on a canvas. The artwork is a twenty–four
by twenty–nine inches in a frame. When I look at this painting, the first thing I think of is where is it located? It looks like it is in the middle of
nowhere but then again it looks like it is in a town because of the railroad tracks. The house is built next to the railroad tracks but there are no trees.
The house contains several windows which I think would be neat. In this painting, he uses vertical and horizontal lines. He used vertical lines for
the columns of the house and parts of the house. He also uses horizontal lines for parts of the house and the railroad tracks. Many of the lines
Edward Hopper painted were medium size. The painting is painted with several figures lined up. If you look at the front of the house, you can tell
that it is square on top of another square. The one on the bottom left is also a square but it is bigger. The picture and the lines are very soft. The
lines in the picture never seem to overlap each other. The way the sun is in the picture makes it look absolutely beautiful. The sun could be either
rising or setting by the look of the artwork. House by the Railroad was painted in the United States. Edward Hopper painted this picture after he came

There was a Mid–Autumn parade in Chinatown on that day, accompanying the dragon and lion dancing, Marann started to give us illustration about
Chinatown. Because It is hard to get a parking lot in Chinatown, and the people who live in Chinatown celebrated Mid–Autumn Day, so I decided to

Francisco Goya
Through his art, Francisco Goya relayed his feelings toward the political unrest that plagued Spain during his lifetime. As an artist of the late eighteenth
and early nineteenth centuries, Goya lived through a time of political and social upheaval, especially throughout Europe. At the time, the ideas of the
Enlightenment had captivated the minds of Spain's most influential citizens and soon, that of Goya's. Born in Fuendetodos, Spain, in 1746, Francisco
Goya came from very humble beginnings. As the son of a gilder, Goya grew up in the lower class of society, and even after his amazing success as
court painter to Spanish royalty, he highly identified himself with the everyday Spaniard or majo. It is this very bond to the people that ... Show more

In Winter, peasants trudge through the storm with a slaughtered pig. The bright pink used in the color of the pig is symbolic of the Rococo style. A
fierce wind blows the tree to near breaking, further communicating the harshness of the weather. Among the colorful scenes that make up this set, it is
undoubtedly in those dedicated to winter that Goya manifests, for the first time in this cartoon, a social awareness of the everyday reality around him,
the same consciousness that would evolve toward the more extreme and dramatic works characteristic of his maturity. The social commentary of this
painting lead to its rejection by the Royal Tapestry Factory. Francisco Goya's questioning and irreverent attitude toward life was graphically conveyed
in his works. His success with the Royal Tapestry Workshop brought his artistic talents to the attention of the Spanish monarchs who would later give
him access to the royal court. As court painter (1789), he created realistic, penetrating portraits of his patrons. Perhaps the most notable portrait painted
during this time, is that of The Family of Charles IV. In this piece, Goya does not emphasize on any particular member of the family. No significant
focus is placed on the king, whom one would assume the portrait should predominantly be about. He and the queen

A Giant Seated in a Landscape, sometimes called The Colossus by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes and Peasant Woman Cooking by a Fireplace that
was painted by Vincent Van Gogh are two very meaningful artworks. Regarding their nationalities, Goya's artwork's geographic location is Spain while
Van Gogh's is Dutch. Goya's art is an etching that is part of the romanticism movement. Contrary to Goya's, Van Gogh's painting was created during the
time of the post–impressionism art movement. These two artworks contrast each other very well, while also containing a few similarities with each
other. Both artists depict a simple yet strong message in their artworks, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The History of the Golden Gate Bridge Essay
Stretching across the San Francisco Bay stands the world famous Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge is located in one of nature's most beautiful settings,
spanning the mile–wide bay from Fort Point in San Francisco to the Marin County Shore. Joseph Strauss, specializing in bridge building, was the
leader of the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. The start of construction began on January 5, 1993 and, after four years, was completed on
April 27, 1997. The bridge was needed to be built because of the growing population after the California Gold Rush. The bridge was a difficult task
for engineers and is now an inspiration. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the largest suspension bridges and is well known around the world. The

He was most certainly familiar with the job.
In 1919, a study was begun to see if it would be possible to build a bridge across the Golden Gate. Michael O'Shaughnessy was the San Francisco
city engineer. He was in charge of the rebuilding of the city after the devastating 1906 earthquake that destroyed much of the city. O'Shaughnessy
knew the need for the city to have bridges. Most said it could not be done and others said it could be done but "it would cost about $100 million to
build it" (Barter 23). O'Shaughnessy and Strauss, both wanting the same thing, got together. After the two consulted, they figured the only way to
bridge the channel was to use a suspension bridge.
Once O'Shaughnessy and Strauss believed they could build the bridge, politics came into the picture. In 1923, the California state legislature
passes a bill that allowed the establishment of a Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District. The district's job was to oversee the project and run the
bridge once it was built. Over the next few years, many people spoke up both for and against the building of the bridge. The land on both ends of the
bridge was owned by the U.S. military. Before any plans could move forward, the military would have to approve the project and give the Bridge
District permission to use War Department land. An army colonel was appointed to hold hearings on the matter and "for seven months, he listened to

Consumerism In The Hippie Movement
The 1960s Hippie movement was a major point in the American history. In the 1960s a certain class of young people associated their lifestyles
with the ideas of freedom, peace, and love. Hippies acted against white upper middle class lifestyle because they thought it was based on the wrong
ideology. Hippies were against consumerism and American suburban life of the late 1950s and early 1960s was embodied in itself the idea of
consumerism. Hippies, on the other hand, felt better about communal life with equal distribution of social goods. Traditional "bigger share" and
consumerist greed as concepts of American society were despised by Hippies. White middle class suburban America with its traditional values and
financial prosperity of baby boom generation was ideologically unfit for the energetic American youth. Seeing half of the world starving (Africa, India,
China) Hippies considered it highly inappropriate to bath in economic prosperity and technological progress with half of the world being deprived of
basic human needs. That way Hippies alienated them from their parents presenting an alternative lifestyle to that of consumerism. Traditional
business–like lifestyle of white middle class in America was based on financial success and economic prosperity as the features of happiness. Hippies
claimed that happiness does not come from money but goes along with peace, love, and unity (Moretta, 45). While typical American family built a

The Revolutions Of The French Revolution
The revolutions that occurred in France and Spain were in different time periods and sought to change their country in different ways. Despite this,
there are many parallels in the ideologies and histories of their revolutionary leaders. Looking at this, one might ask how the backgrounds and styles of
the leaders affected the outcome of each revolution? Napoleon Bonaparte of the French Revolution (hereafter Napoleon) and Francisco Franco of the
Spanish Civil War (hereafter Franco) came from similar backgrounds with a heavy influence on education andmilitary training. Both men fought with
a primary motivation of forming a military dictatorship under their rule. One notable area that where they differed is in their leadership: Franco led
through fear and intimidation whereas Napoleon led by gaining the respect of his people. With respect to their backgrounds, Francisco Franco and
Napoleon Bonaparte came from middle–class families and went on to establish themselves as leaders in military school. Franco was born in "El
Ferrol, a small naval base in northwestern Spain," in Galicia. It is said that the "stereotypical Galician man... is melancholic, soft–spoken, and prudent."
Because of this, many Spaniards argue that Franco's background in Galicia played a huge role in the type of leader he later became. His father,
NicolГЎs Franco, held a "high–level administrative position" in the Galician region that Franco grew up in. Franco came from a "family with a

Japanese Exclusionism Pros And Cons
The reasons for immigration to the "land of opportunity" called America in the early years of our country are clear. America was seen as a place
where an individual could start over with an equal chance of success or failure, offered jobs, no matter what country he or she came from. This proved
to be true for Irish immigrants, German–American immigrants, English and black immigrants that came to America. However, this was not the same
for many of the Japanese immigrants. One of the many challenges Japanese immigrants faced when they arrived in the United States was the efforts of
politicians, intellectuals, and community leaders to label Japanese an "undesirable race." Known collectively as the "anti–Japanese exclusion
movement," these efforts ranged from introducing discriminatory legislation that discouraged further Japanese immigration, encouraging and enforcing
boycotts of Japanese businesses, and spreading propaganda that offered a multitude of reasons to justify the exclusion of Japanese from the United
States. The Anti–Japanese Exclusion Movement came on the heels of the earlier Chinese exclusion movement. When Chinese laborers began
immigrating to the U.S., especially the West Coast, in the mid–nineteenth century in pursuit of work, other groups (some of which consisted of
European immigrants) sought to exclude Chinese on the premise that as "Asiatics" or "Mongolians" they were inherently unassimilable. In particular,
these exclusionists objected to the class background and what they argued was the questionable morality of these immigrants who were mostly laborers
and (in the case of women) prostitutes, arguing that as "non–Christians" these immigrants lacked basic morals and as such would be detrimental to
American society. Using tactics ranging from brute violence to more subtle legal means–particularly the Page Law and 1882 Chinese Exclusion
Act–these groups succeeded in barring most Chinese immigration. By identifying Chinese as inherently undesirable and therefore not worthy of being
allowed into the U.S., and by laying the groundwork for associating Asia with a paranoid vision of the impending onslaught of Asian invaders (also
known as yellow peril), the anti–Chinese exclusion movement

How Does Goya Design Transcend Into Modern Caricature And...
Baudelaire once said, "Caricatures are often the most faithful mirror of life." The art of caricature was established into print in eighteenth–century
England as a form of commentary on the current events of the time. Caricature as a style itself is a combination of two separate social inventions. "
Caricature Adopting the Italian invention of caricatura–the graphic exaggeration of facial and bodily features for comic effect and combining it with
an updated repertoire of visual metaphor, personification, and allegorical attributes. " Though born in England, the story about to be told in this paper
is one of Spanish origin, a story about Francisco Goya. This paper will discuss how Goya implemented painting, drawing, and printing technique to
stimulate social critique of and satirize the subjects of his works. Then how does Goya's methodology transcend into modern caricature and social
critique?
Before one can talk about his prints, one must understand who Francisco Goya is as an artist. Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker of
late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout his long career was an important commentator and chronicler of his era. Goya produced a great
number of works in a variety of media in his lifetime. He did religious subjects in painted frescos and portraits, he then also depicted life in Spain
through aquatints, etchings, and lithographs . Gautier comments saying:

American Identity In No-No Boy
After WWII ended in 1945, xenophobia amongst the white populace, coupled with an inflexible definition of who or what represented
"American–ness", prevented Asian Americans from claiming an American identity. Alongside this exclusion, the post
–war period also witnessed the
assertion of American identity formed by culture and family in the Issei and Nisei community. This essay will argue that through Ichiro Yamada's
struggle to integrate, Okada's No–No Boy represents the fracturing belief of a monoracial American identity and the cultural instability found within the
narrative. John Okada's No–No Boy adopts an allegoric strategy in order to foreground the attitudes and lives the Issei and Nisei shaped during their
internment and sometimes incarceration, which continued after the war. Moreover, as the novel progresses, Okada examines characters such as Ichiro
Yamada, who face the cultural conflicts and form the possibility of an "elusive insinuation of promise" of belonging in post–war America (221).
Additionally, the racial slurs and violent attacks by other Japanese and non–Japanese Americans that befall him highlight the divisions within American
society. A close reading for the free indirect discourse and allegory shows how John Okada uses these literary strategies to suggest the disturbance of
American identity. Ichiro Yamada's refusal to serve in the U.S. Army presents the parental and cultural aspects that are influenced by the belief of a
monoracial American identity. During the internment, the government administered a Loyalty Questionnaire to all Japanese internees. To Ichiro, this
either determined his rejection or acceptance into American society. One major question was Question 27: "willing to serve whenever ordered" (10/9
Lecture). Another major question was Question 28: "swearing allegiance to the United States and forswearing allegiance to the Emperor of Japan" (10
/9 Lecture). By refusing to serve in the army, American society regarded him as a disloyal American. However, in Mrs. Yamada's eyes, his refusal
affirms her pride in calling him "her son" (16). During this scene, free indirect discourse, or the "presenting of thoughts of a character as if it is from

Analysis Of'saturn His Son, At The Museum Of El Prado...
I first saw this painting, Saturn Devouring His Son, at the Museum of El Prado alongside the other Black Paintings. My initial reaction was of fear.
These are artworks that should not be simply seen in front of a computer screen. The thickness of the paint and the careful attention to details; these are
things that are missed if not seen in person. Upon walking into the small room the first painting that draws the attention of visitors is this painting. Not
only is this a grotesque piece in an otherwise frightening room, Saturn also looks like he's rather enjoying this action, and his intense glare from his
bulging eyes gives the impression as if you (the viewer) are the next target. The goal for this essay is to show Goya's way of depicting events that have
affected not only society but him personally.
It is a mythological subject that literally shows Saturn devouring his son. Light is very important as it focuses directly on the face of Saturn and the
body of his son. It is a blinding light that leaves the dark background with a feeling of gloominess. The composition revolves around a single plane in
which Saturn is placed devouring his victim. The dark background marks the sense of depth. Violent motion appreciates both his posture, and his
mouth. His face reflects an expression of drama and tenebrism. The predominant color on the drawing emphasizes the dark tones that contrast with the
clarity of the body of the victim. His deformity produces more drama in the scene.

American Directness and the Japanese Essay
American Directness and the Japanese
American and Japanese ways of speaking are so different that they often cause culture shock to both Americans and Japanese who visit each other's
country. Most Japanese who come to the United States are at first shocked and have a problem with the American direct way of speaking.
Culture shock occurs because most Japanese cannot easily escape from the formula "politeness= indirectness." Compared to the American way of
speaking, Japanese speak much more indirectly. Directness is considered a form of impoliteness in Japan. Therefore, when we want to be polite, we
speak and act very indirectly. For example, we seldom say, "I'll go to abathroom," except when we are with close friends. Usually, we ... Show more

Japanese are shocked by American unreserved behavior because the American way of speech is very direct. They do not hesitate to express what they
want since directness is honesty for them. They will say, "I'm hungry. Why don't we go and eat something?" Japanese are surprised to see Americans
in the presence of guests say, "I'm hungry" or "Can I have another glass of juice?" On the other hand, we can easily understand what they want.
At the same time, Japanese are shocked because their way of being polite no longer holds good in the United States. If we answer, "Uh..., yes. I'm
hungry but only a little," our host or hostess may postpone the meal. Later, Americans around me might notice my stomach rumbling and wonder why I
did not tell the truth.
Similarly, Japanese may be surprised to hear Americans say "No" often because Japanese tend not to say "No." We usually express our reluctance to
accept an offer by subtle facial and verbal expressions because we want to avoid making people feel bad by refusing directly. For instance, a Japanese
student studying might say, "Um..., yes," when asked by an American roommate if he may turn on the TV. Whereas the Japanese student thinks his
expression, "Um," fairly expresses his intention of

Challenging Society Through Art.
Challenging Society Through Art
Art makes a statement, it is as simple as that. The most preferred type of art emotes happiness to the viewer throughout all of history. Yet, throughout
the years, artists have come to challenge society's preference of art. Artists like Gustave Courbet, Francisco Goya, and Ai Weiwei, who decided to take
the challenge and start a new progression. Social critique through art is blatantly shown throughout each of their pieces: Stonebreakers, The Third of
May 1808, and Sunflower Seeds. All three are similar yet different. Through comparison, a similar theme still remains present: Each artist 's social
critique through their artwork. These particular types of artwork will show how one moment in history changed the view of millions throughout
centuries of time. With the use of symbolism, positioning of figures, historical context, color usage, and many other elements, these three works of art
make an inspiring statement to the world.
The first painting, Stone Breakers by Gustave Courbet depicts two males that go to work breaking stone and wearing torn and tattered clothing. This
job was usually done by the lower classes of society. At this time in France there was a rising of revolutionary thinking. The reason for the sudden
outbreak involved many factors, the ones portrayed in this painting are the demands of the working classes. The figures are not arranged in the typical
way. Both the young and the old males are turned away from the viewer.

generational gap between two different immigrant generations, Ichiro and his paranoid and controlling mother, already had the potential to create
conflicts; yet the war between Japan and the U.S. intensified the tension. To Ichiro, being a No–No Boy caused by his mother's powerful influence was

Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Spanish Civil War
The twentieth century saw more proxy wars than any time in human history; great powers would flex their martial muscles in smaller theatres of
conflict in order to test their own strengths and weaknesses without risking their international reputation as an aggressive nation. The Spanish Civil
War served as a significant proxy for the totalitarian European powers in the interwar period; Fascist Italy andNazi Germany would support the
right–wing nationalists while the Soviet Union and various International Brigades would back the alliance of the Republican government and
Anarcho–communist organizations. Spain would serve as a testing ground for the armed forces of the European totalitarian states in which major
military and ideological support would be given to the Spanish belligerents. In spite of initial setbacks in the initial military coup, Francisco Franco
would eventually crush the Republican–Anarchist opposition and maintain authoritarian control of Spain for decades. His success was due in large
part to the interests of Hitler and Mussolini in creating a friendly state in the Iberian Peninsula. Through contributions of manpower, military advisors
and materiel from the Nazis and Fascists, Nationalist Spain was able to take advantage of the less–organized and squabbling Republican government
forces. La Guerra Civil was the culmination of a century of turmoil in Spain. The Spanish monarchy would be abolished in 18XX, with its Savoyard

Francisco Franco Bahamonde : The Civil Of The Sacred Heart
Francisco Paulino Hermenegildo Teodulo Franco Bahamonde, or more commonly Francisco Franco, was born on December 4, 1892 in Ferrol,
Galicia, Spain. Franco was born to Nicolas Franco y Salgado–AraГєjo, a Spanish Naval Officer, and MarГa del Pilar Bahamonde y Pardo de Andrade,
an upper middle class Roman Catholic. Until the age of 12, Francisco attended El Ferrol's Roman Catholic School of the Sacred Heart, a small
private school run by a priest; he would then attend a naval secondary school. His family was very involved in the Spanish Navy, for six uninterrupted
generations, almost two centuries, the Franco Family produced several naval officers. It was generally assumed that Francisco would follow in his
family's footsteps, however, in 1906–1913 the Spanish government suspended admissions at Academia de Marina (The Naval Academy) due to
shortages in funding. Francisco would no longer have the chance to follow in his family's footsteps, instead he began to attend Academia de InfanterГa

the Spanish Army as a second lieutenant. He was briefly stationed in Ferrol, but he then volunteered for active duty in Spanish Morocco, during 1912.

Francisco De Goya Black Paintings
Francisco de Goya's Pinturas negras, or Black Paintings, are some of the most grotesque and unsettling images in art history, with one painting in
particular, Saturno devorando a su hijo, or Saturn Devouring One of His Sons, standing out the most amongst them all. With his wildly staring eyes,
gaping mouth and half–eaten son in his hands, it makes one wonder what would drive an artist to create an image like this. Goya, however, was not
uneducated in the horrors of the world, witnessing the travesties of the Peninsular War, the atrocities of the Spanish Inquisition, surviving two life
threatening illnesses, with one leaving him completely deaf, and the death of six of his seven children. Perhaps it was one of these instances in
particular that encouraged him to conceiving this disconcerting figure, or perhaps it was a combination of the three.
At the beginning of Goya's career, in 1777, he was commissioned to create a series of tapestry cartoons from the Royal Tapestry Factory, designing
some 42 patterns over five years. Some of his more popular paintings were originally tapestry cartoons such as The Parasol. His use of the popular
Rococo style, brought him to the attention of the aristocracy of Spain. In 1789, he was appointed to court painter to Charles IV and then the following
year, he became First Court Painter. His portraits of the king, queen and royal family, were anything but flattering. While he was given this great
position of influence and prestige, he

mutual philosophy is manifested in Neruda and Whitman's poetry in several interesting ways. One of the most striking biographical parallels between
the two poets originates from their direct involvement in civil war. Whitman served as a nurse in war hospitals during the American ... Show more

In the section "Arrival in Madrid of the International Brigade" Neruda shows the troops from the international forces arriving in the desolate city of
Madrid. This section mirrors Whitman's Drum Taps section of poetry "Eighteen Sixty–One" which also focuses on the war as it is reaching a critical
point of expansion. Centered on the time of most profound national crisis, the poets use the image of gathering soldiers to validate their cause. The
solider becomes the embodiment of the poets' war philosophies of reconstruction out of destruction. Neruda and Whitman concentrate on the soldier's
sacrifice as requisite for societal salvation.
Each poem reflects the desolation resulting from the beginning stages of the conflict and subsequently presents the gathering soldiers as a reason for
hope. The sections begin submerged in the bleak solemnity of the turmoil of war. This represents a shift from the booming patriotism in the proceeding
section in Drum Taps. Whitman's speaker shifts to a grave tone, lamenting the "Arm'd year–year of struggle, / No dainty rhymes or sentimental love
verses for you terrible year" (lines 1–2). The "terrible year" is replete with the profound disintegration of societal structures as the order of the United
States is destroyed. The gravity presented in "Eighteen Sixty–One" assumes a physical manifestation in "Arrival in Madrid" as Neruda observes the

The Effects Of Foreign Labor On Hawaii Essay
It is with great news that I write to you on this momentous day, brother. I have finally landed in San Francisco. About time as well. I don't think I
was ever able to gain sea legs. Now, it is time for me just like our fellow countrymen abroad to serve Japan in expanding her influence. While aboard
the ship, I was able to to study the guides. There was a lot of useful information in all of them. I believe I gained a great deal from How to Go to
America Alone.
We stopped in Honolulu to pick up more travelers. Many were fellow Japanese who were leaving Hawaii in search of higher paying jobs on the
mainland. I must say, many of their stories did not quite represent those that had encouraged me to take this journey. Life on Hawaii must be very much
different than on the mainland. I was told that the companies and plantations had effectively became powerful unchecked governing forces. Abuse of
foreign labor is common. I must be positive and understand that the situation in the United States will not be the same. Hopefully, I will be able to
succeed in my studies and make a great deal of money. It is ever important that I send my remaining earnings back home to support the family.
I have changed as a person adjusting to life in America. Finding good work has been an arduous task. Thankfully, I have had the support of our ken.
Kenjinkai has been important in my first few years in the United States. Imagine coming this country alone without anyone familiar to fall back upon.

Analysis Of La Lengua De Las Mariposas

  • 1. Analysis Of La Lengua De Las Mariposas La Lengua de las Mariposas, directed by JosГ© Luis Cuerda, is a marvelous and powerful film that explores Spain's past through the lens of education. Cuerda does this by exhibiting the contrast between the 1931–1936 Republic and the dictatorships that ruled the country just before and after the Spanish Civil War through the relationship between Moncho, a young boy, and Don Gregorio, his teacher. The film depicts the Republic's aims for a liberal education and the pressures this produced within the more conservative region of society. Overall this film portrays both the freedom of this short period in Spain's history and the beginning of Franco's oppressive dictatorship. There are many layers of themes that are subtlety imbedded into the film. The political theme of the film is a truly intriguing portrayal of life in Spain during this tense time. The underlying message of the film is one of defending the freedom of expression. It explores the importance of gaining knowledge through one's own personal experiences. Culture is used as a pathway to achieve personal freedom. In addition, the film attempts to break some of the taboos surrounding an adequate education, focusing instead on this education through experience. Observation is used as a way to awaken the senses. Another theme that was imbedded in the film was childhood with the inclusion of a vast number of topics. The film not only contains scenes that deal with war but it includes scenes that include family, love, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Socialist Party's Transition The Socialist Party's contributions to the transition played a major role in these negotiated pacts. The PSOE's original party platform was Marxism and democratic rupture. Democratic rupture declared the removal of remnants of Francoism from the government that included the 'bunker.' Felipe GonzГЎlez and the Vice–Secretary General Alfonso Guerra led the change in the PSOE's change in policy. GonzГЎlez, Guerra, and their supporters within the socialist party argued the party's slogan should not use Marxism. For GonzГЎlez, the success of SuГЎrez and his policies on amnesty, free elections, and the PCE's legalization led to his decision that the PSOE needed to become more moderate. SuГЎrez's social conservative polices also worked against the PSOE... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The transition was an event that took place in Spain. The transitional period's international significance was unlike the international context of the Spanish Civil War. Still, the U.S. and the world understood how significant the death of Franco affected Western Europe and the creation and ratification of the 1978 Constitution. For example, the U.S. State Department Central files at the National Archives has reports of the Embassy in Madrid. These reports, along with FRUS, had the attention of a superpower to the impact of the Spanish transition. Analysis of the transition in an international context in important because of the comparisons made to Spain's transition to other authoritarian dictatorships transitioning to democracy in the twentieth century. Spanish newspaper publications played a major role in the transition thanks to an increase push for the freedom of the press. El PaГs and Cambio 16 had significant and numerous reports on the events since its first issue during the transition. El Socialista, the socialist party's newspaper, had a vital role in the PSOE's platform that led to their victory in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction I.Attention Grabber: Have any of you, if you are open to admit it, ever been to prison? A.Well, I have, but not in the way you would think. B.I went voluntarily on a tour and the prison was actually Alcatraz. II.Credibility and Goodwill: I have always been interested in historic landmarks and structures, and Alcatraz has always been on the top of my list. B.But, because of the island was isolated from other land, and because it had ice cold waters and huge waves, they decided it could be used as a place to hold captives of war. 1.A large cell house was built to hold them, and it started out with only twenty–six captives, but came to hold over four–hundred and fifty. 2.But, operational costs eventually became too high, and in 1934, the Army decided to close the prison, and ownership went to the Department of Justice. C.During this time, mobs and gangs were on the rise. 1.Alcatraz became the new home for these criminals, which was a home that no one would ever want live in. 2.It was remodeled and built so that no one could escape, or so they thought, which I'll get to in a minute. Transition: As I said, mobs and gangs were on the rise, and this led to the imprisonment of some of the most notorious gangsters. II.According the therichest.com, Alcatraz housed the likes of Machine Gun Kelly and probably the most infamous of all, Al Capone. A.Machine Gun Kelley's favorite weapon was the Thompson machine gun, hence the name Machine Gun Kelly. 1.He became known for kidnapping Charles F. Urschel, who was a business tycoon in the oil business, and he collected a $200,000 ransom, which was close to $3,000,000 today. 2.He was eventually caught and sent to Alcatraz. • 5. The Concept of "Advanced Civilization" Led to the European... During the European conquests of the 16th and 17th centuries, the concept of an advanced civilization was essential most of the time. This can be supported by the strategic Spanish conquests, Portuguese exploration, and the Dutch trading empire. To begin with, North and South America, which had existed in isolation for thousands of years, came into contact with the rest of the world via the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus. In 1492, he was sent by Spain to look for a route to India. Rather, Columbus came into contact with a Caribbean island. This marked the beginning of Spanish invasion of the Americas, who were in search of gold. Perhaps the most profound Spanish conquistadors were Hernan Cortez and Francisco Pizzaro, who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Incas had no knowledge of the wheel, arch construction, or writing, but they managed a society in the Andes. Pizzaro arrived with 180 men and 30 horses, and decided to meet with the ruler, Athualpa, under an agreement of having unarmed body guards. As the gold covered ruler agreed, he was immediately stripped of his gold headband and one blast of his cannon and small army slaughtered the Inca warriors 50,000. Atuhualpa tried to free himself by offering a 17ft by 22ft by 9ft room of gold. The Spanish took the offer, but still murdered Atuahulpa to show that they could not be trusted so that others would abide by their rule. The contact between the Americas and the Old World began biological exchange of animals and foods which greatly benefited trade. Additionally, Vasco de Gama was a Portuguese explorer who discovered an ocean route to India, in 1498, by going under the tip of Africa, or Cape of Good Hope. This way avoided conflicts with the Ottoman Turks and led one directly into the fast moving currents of the Indian Ocean. This plan was carefully devised by skilled Portuguese mapmakers and navigators. Since this way was known, many rulers such as the Sultan of Manindi, offered the Portugese captain a pilot to guide his ships to trade for spices, gems, and fine (cotton, paper, porcelain, silk, glass, carpets) textiles. • 6. Holcomb Bridge Speeches Good morning Robin, For the past couple of weeks, the activity level for Suite #400 and #500 at Holcomb Bridge has been fairly "light". Personally speaking, this past month has been a fairly active month for me, but the activity level specifically at 3867 Holcomb Bridge just hasn't been that great. I've canvassed the surrounding area (within a half a mile) from 3867 Holcomb Bridge property and it seems like there are several "similar" types of offices where the Landlord is asking "equal" to or slightly "less" amount per SF compared to 3867 Holcomb Bridge. However, even with the slightly lower rates at several of these buildings, some of these spaces continue to remain in the market as "vacant" spaces. And some spaces have been in the ... • 7. Descriptive Tourism 5 must–see top rated tourist attractions in Argentina Argentina is a stunning country and it is one that should sit high on anyone's bucket list. There's a challenge, though, when planning a trip because the country is so massive it's difficult to know where to start or end up. It's difficult to narrow the tourist attractions down to just 5 because there are so many, but we dedicated ourselves to choosing the absolute best and here's what we came up with. Please note: they're all so awesome we haven't put them in any particular order. 1. Perito Moreno Glacier Another UNESCO site, and this one you will find in El Calafte, a small town which is home to Los Glaciares National Park. What's of interest here? The Perito Moreno Glacier, not only is it the third largest fresh water reserve on the planet, it is also home to an 18 mile long ice formation. The visitor center is just two hours from the town and from the center there's only a short walk to reach to glacier via a walking circuit. For the more adventurous spirits out there... you can climb Perito Moreno! Yes, there are tours available from a quick hour walk on the surface of the ice to a five hour trek. That's not all you will find at the park, though. There's also a 2 mile high mountain, Monte Fitz Roy, which is just as treacherous as Everest. 2. Ushuaia Patagonia is well known for incredible landscapes, bragging massive stretches of plateaus and plains, made all the more dramatic by the backdrop of the Andes. This southern hot spot also happens to feature Ushuaia – which just happens to be the most southern city in the world. It got its start in the 20th century as a penal colony, but now it's become the place to launch adventures. It's the starting point for trips around Cape Horn and kicking off an Antartic adventure. It's fondly known as the end of the world and has a truly unique landscape that features woods, mountains, glaciers, and sea. It sits at the very edge of Tierra del Fuego National Park. In fact, you'll want to visit the National Park, too, while you are in the area. There are also two museums that shows the unique history of the area, and a lighthouse (built in 1884). 3. California High Speed Rail California High Speed Rail Michael Kimbrell English 1 Ms. Irwin August 21, 2011 California High Speed Rail Looking at the California high speed rail project truly has shocked the public and makes them wonder if this is a great plan for California's environment. "The current plan will connect San Francisco with Los Angeles cutting a six hour car ride down to two hours and forty minutes"(Souza, 2011). The train running through Kings County will take out many dairies and cut even more in half. Making these cuts will be hard for dairymen to get to their crops or feed their animals. Building the rail is a bad idea due to the fact; money will be taken from schools, it will devastate the future of California's agriculture industry, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conclusion If this high speed rail in California is built the school system will be at its bare minimums, will devastate the future of California's agriculture industry, furthermore it will not produce long term steady jobs to boost the economy. Americans always want bigger and better things or the fast paced life style. Is it better to have luxury when the state is at a time in crisis and can barely afford to stay running? Sometimes people rush into things just because it is new or seems like a great idea. When voting for this high speed rail to come ripping through the heart of California Americans need to think about the future and what is at stake. Schools keep students educated so they could go out and be successful person, agriculture feeds California and produces jobs that feeds workers families. • 12. John Okada's No-No Boy The United States of America a nation known for allowing freedom, equality, justice, and most of all a chance for immigrants to attain the American dream. However, that "America" was hardly recognizable during the 1940's when President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, ordering 120,000 Japanese Americans to be relocated to internment camps. As for the aftermath, little is known beyond the historical documents and stories from those affected. Through John Okada's novel, No–No Boy, a closer picture of the aftermath of the internment is shown through the events of the protagonist, Ichiro. It provides a more human perspective that is filled with emotions and connections that are unattainable from an ordinary historical document. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More importantly, it makes Ichiro loathe himself more because he feels as though being a No–no boy makes him incapable of being "American" since he is not deserving or capable of walking around proudly like the veterans. Unlike the veterans, Ichiro finds himself unable to prove that he is "American" which leaves him with his Japanese identity. However, it is that same Japanese identity that got him interned, imprisoned, harassed, and in the position that he is in now. Above all, what is clearly visible is that there is not only a separation within the nation but a separation within the entire Japanese community. The differences in Ichiro's family contributed to his self–hatred and seemingly lost identity. To him, he was the "emptiness between the one and the other and could see flashes of the truth that was true for his parents and the truth that was true for his brother" (Okada, 19). He did not want to be Japanese because he did not know the language and was consumed with anger and hatred towards his parents because even they weren't any less Japanese even after living in America for thirty–five years, thus utterly rejecting America (Okada, 19). In addition, his mother's defiance of the reality of Japan's loss in the war and their inability to go back to Japan as she hoped for, as well as his father's lack of control and courage only increases his desire to not be Japanese. The poem is part of the Third Residence, published in 1947, which expresses Neruda's artistic camaraderie; his love for Spanish poetry which he believes unites the coloniser with its colony. It was written as an outraged reaction to the civil strife and political murders in Spain. It was inspired by Ruben Dario (1867 – 1916), a Latin American poet who wrote politically charged verses. Neruda was livid and pained at the death of his friend, Garcia Lorca and a number of other Republicans at the hands of anti–democratic Fascist forces. The First line of the poem 'Jaut and dry Spain was' sums up the poet's suffering without any succor. Through a series of pictures and images the poet captures the atmosphere of those days. In the second stanza of the poem the poet records his personal attitude towards Spain:

'How unto cry out, unto the very soul
I love your barren soil and your rough bread,
Your stricken people'

Deep inside his heart the poet can still feel the life that has disappeared. He still finds the essential Spain to be timeless which no political turmoil can ever change. He remembers the mineral wealth of the country. Somehow, he feels, all this has been undone by a cruel and unfeeling god.
The poem presents a picture of Spain, historically rich and glorious but torn by strife at that time. The poet mourns the glorious past but at the same time emphasizes with the suffering of its stricken people. Silence and isolation are reiterated in the poem. The house he painted was in the style of a Victorian house. The house was built next to railroad tracks. He painted House by the Railroad with oil based paint on a canvas. The artwork is a twenty–four by twenty–nine inches in a frame. When I look at this painting, the first thing I think of is where is it located? It looks like it is in the middle of nowhere but then again it looks like it is in a town because of the railroad tracks. The house is built next to the railroad tracks but there are no trees. The house contains several windows which I think would be neat. In this painting, he uses vertical and horizontal lines. He used vertical lines for the columns of the house and parts of the house. He also uses horizontal lines for parts of the house and the railroad tracks. Many of the lines Edward Hopper painted were medium size. The painting is painted with several figures lined up. If you look at the front of the house, you can tell that it is square on top of another square. The one on the bottom left is also a square but it is bigger. The picture and the lines are very soft. The lines in the picture never seem to overlap each other. The way the sun is in the picture makes it look absolutely beautiful. The sun could be either rising or setting by the look of the artwork. As an artist of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Goya lived through a time of political and social upheaval, especially throughout Europe. Born in Fuendetodos, Spain, in 1746, Francisco Goya came from very humble beginnings. The social commentary of this painting lead to its rejection by the Royal Tapestry Factory. Francisco Goya's questioning and irreverent attitude toward life was graphically conveyed in his works. His success with the Royal Tapestry Workshop brought his artistic talents to the attention of the Spanish monarchs who would later give him access to the royal court. As court painter (1789), he created realistic, penetrating portraits of his patrons. Perhaps the most notable portrait painted during this time, is that of The Family of Charles IV. Joseph Strauss, specializing in bridge building, was the leader of the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. The start of construction began on January 5, 1993 and, after four years, was completed on April 27, 1997. The bridge was needed to be built because of the growing population after the California Gold Rush. The bridge was a difficult task for engineers and is now an inspiration. Michael O'Shaughnessy was the San Francisco city engineer. He was in charge of the rebuilding of the city after the devastating 1906 earthquake that destroyed much of the city. O'Shaughnessy knew the need for the city to have bridges. Most said it could not be done and others said it could be done but "it would cost about $100 million to build it" (Barter 23). O'Shaughnessy and Strauss, both wanting the same thing, got together. After the two consulted, they figured the only way to bridge the channel was to use a suspension bridge. Once O'Shaughnessy and Strauss believed they could build the bridge, politics came into the picture. In 1923, the California state legislature passes a bill that allowed the establishment of a Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District. The district's job was to oversee the project and run the bridge once it was built. Over the next few years, many people spoke up both for and against the building of the bridge. The land on both ends of the bridge was owned by the U.S. military. Before any plans could move forward, the military would have to approve the project and give the Bridge District permission to use War Department land. • 22. Consumerism In The Hippie Movement The 1960s Hippie movement was a major point in the American history. In the 1960s a certain class of young people associated their lifestyles with the ideas of freedom, peace, and love. Hippies acted against white upper middle class lifestyle because they thought it was based on the wrong ideology. Hippies were against consumerism and American suburban life of the late 1950s and early 1960s was embodied in itself the idea of consumerism. Hippies, on the other hand, felt better about communal life with equal distribution of social goods. Traditional "bigger share" and consumerist greed as concepts of American society were despised by Hippies. White middle class suburban America with its traditional values and financial prosperity of baby boom generation was ideologically unfit for the energetic American youth. Seeing half of the world starving (Africa, India, China) Hippies considered it highly inappropriate to bath in economic prosperity and technological progress with half of the world being deprived of basic human needs. That way Hippies alienated them from their parents presenting an alternative lifestyle to that of consumerism. Traditional business–like lifestyle of white middle class in America was based on financial success and economic prosperity as the features of happiness. Despite this, there are many parallels in the ideologies and histories of their revolutionary leaders. Looking at this, one might ask how the backgrounds and styles of the leaders affected the outcome of each revolution? Napoleon Bonaparte of the French Revolution (hereafter Napoleon) and Francisco Franco of the Spanish Civil War (hereafter Franco) came from similar backgrounds with a heavy influence on education andmilitary training. Both men fought with a primary motivation of forming a military dictatorship under their rule. One notable area that where they differed is in their leadership: Franco led through fear and intimidation whereas Napoleon led by gaining the respect of his people. With respect to their backgrounds, Francisco Franco and Napoleon Bonaparte came from middle–class families and went on to establish themselves as leaders in military school. Franco was born in "El Ferrol, a small naval base in northwestern Spain," in Galicia. It is said that the "stereotypical Galician man... is melancholic, soft–spoken, and prudent." Because of this, many Spaniards argue that Franco's background in Galicia played a huge role in the type of leader he later became. • 24. Japanese Exclusionism Pros And Cons The reasons for immigration to the "land of opportunity" called America in the early years of our country are clear. America was seen as a place where an individual could start over with an equal chance of success or failure, offered jobs, no matter what country he or she came from. This proved to be true for Irish immigrants, German–American immigrants, English and black immigrants that came to America. However, this was not the same for many of the Japanese immigrants. One of the many challenges Japanese immigrants faced when they arrived in the United States was the efforts of politicians, intellectuals, and community leaders to label Japanese an "undesirable race." Known collectively as the "anti–Japanese exclusion movement," these efforts ranged from introducing discriminatory legislation that discouraged further Japanese immigration, encouraging and enforcing boycotts of Japanese businesses, and spreading propaganda that offered a multitude of reasons to justify the exclusion of Japanese from the United States. The Anti–Japanese Exclusion Movement came on the heels of the earlier Chinese exclusion movement. When Chinese laborers began immigrating to the U.S., especially the West Coast, in the mid–nineteenth century in pursuit of work, other groups (some of which consisted of European immigrants) sought to exclude Chinese on the premise that as "Asiatics" or "Mongolians" they were inherently unassimilable. In particular, these exclusionists objected to the class background and what they argued was the questionable morality of these immigrants who were mostly laborers and (in the case of women) prostitutes, arguing that as "non–Christians" these immigrants lacked basic morals and as such would be detrimental to American society. Using tactics ranging from brute violence to more subtle legal means–particularly the Page Law and 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act–these groups succeeded in barring most Chinese immigration. By identifying Chinese as inherently undesirable and therefore not worthy of being allowed into the U.S., and by laying the groundwork for associating Asia with a paranoid vision of the impending onslaught of Asian invaders (also known as yellow peril), the anti–Chinese exclusion movement ... • 27. How Does Goya Design Transcend Into Modern Caricature And... Baudelaire once said, "Caricatures are often the most faithful mirror of life." The art of caricature was established into print in eighteenth–century England as a form of commentary on the current events of the time. Caricature as a style itself is a combination of two separate social inventions. " Caricature Adopting the Italian invention of caricatura–the graphic exaggeration of facial and bodily features for comic effect and combining it with an updated repertoire of visual metaphor, personification, and allegorical attributes. " Though born in England, the story about to be told in this paper is one of Spanish origin, a story about Francisco Goya. This paper will discuss how Goya implemented painting, drawing, and printing technique to stimulate social critique of and satirize the subjects of his works. Then how does Goya's methodology transcend into modern caricature and social critique? Before one can talk about his prints, one must understand who Francisco Goya is as an artist. Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker of late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout his long career was an important commentator and chronicler of his era. Goya produced a great number of works in a variety of media in his lifetime. He did religious subjects in painted frescos and portraits, he then also depicted life in Spain through aquatints, etchings, and lithographs . We went to boot camp together; then we were told we were both going on the USS Nimitz to fight the naval battle against the Iraqians. • 29. American Identity In No-No Boy After WWII ended in 1945, xenophobia amongst the white populace, coupled with an inflexible definition of who or what represented "American–ness", prevented Asian Americans from claiming an American identity. Alongside this exclusion, the post –war period also witnessed the assertion of American identity formed by culture and family in the Issei and Nisei community. This essay will argue that through Ichiro Yamada's struggle to integrate, Okada's No–No Boy represents the fracturing belief of a monoracial American identity and the cultural instability found within the narrative. John Okada's No–No Boy adopts an allegoric strategy in order to foreground the attitudes and lives the Issei and Nisei shaped during their internment and sometimes incarceration, which continued after the war. Moreover, as the novel progresses, Okada examines characters such as Ichiro Yamada, who face the cultural conflicts and form the possibility of an "elusive insinuation of promise" of belonging in post–war America (221). Additionally, the racial slurs and violent attacks by other Japanese and non–Japanese Americans that befall him highlight the divisions within American society. A close reading for the free indirect discourse and allegory shows how John Okada uses these literary strategies to suggest the disturbance of American identity. Ichiro Yamada's refusal to serve in the U.S. Army presents the parental and cultural aspects that are influenced by the belief of a monoracial American identity. During the internment, the government administered a Loyalty Questionnaire to all Japanese internees. To Ichiro, this either determined his rejection or acceptance into American society. One major question was Question 27: "willing to serve whenever ordered" (10/9 Lecture). Another major question was Question 28: "swearing allegiance to the United States and forswearing allegiance to the Emperor of Japan" (10 /9 Lecture). By refusing to serve in the army, American society regarded him as a disloyal American. However, in Mrs. Yamada's eyes, his refusal affirms her pride in calling him "her son" (16). • 30. The thickness of the paint and the careful attention to details; these are things that are missed if not seen in person. Upon walking into the small room the first painting that draws the attention of visitors is this painting. Not only is this a grotesque piece in an otherwise frightening room, Saturn also looks like he's rather enjoying this action, and his intense glare from his bulging eyes gives the impression as if you (the viewer) are the next target. The goal for this essay is to show Goya's way of depicting events that have affected not only society but him personally. It is a mythological subject that literally shows Saturn devouring his son. Light is very important as it focuses directly on the face of Saturn and the body of his son. It is a blinding light that leaves the dark background with a feeling of gloominess. The composition revolves around a single plane in which Saturn is placed devouring his victim. The dark background marks the sense of depth. Violent motion appreciates both his posture, and his mouth. His face reflects an expression of drama and tenebrism. The predominant color on the drawing emphasizes the dark tones that contrast with the clarity of the body of the victim. His deformity produces more drama in the scene. ... American Directness and the Japanese Essay American Directness and the Japanese American and Japanese ways of speaking are so different that they often cause culture shock to both Americans and Japanese who visit each other's country. Most Japanese who come to the United States are at first shocked and have a problem with the American direct way of speaking. Culture shock occurs because most Japanese cannot easily escape from the formula "politeness= indirectness." Compared to the American way of speaking, Japanese speak much more indirectly. On the other hand, we can easily understand what they want. At the same time, Japanese are shocked because their way of being polite no longer holds good in the United States. Later, Americans around me might notice my stomach rumbling and wonder why I did not tell the truth. Similarly, Japanese may be surprised to hear Americans say "No" often because Japanese tend not to say "No." We usually express our reluctance to accept an offer by subtle facial and verbal expressions because we want to avoid making people feel bad by refusing directly. For instance, a Japanese student studying might say, "Um..., yes," when asked by an American roommate if he may turn on the TV. The most preferred type of art emotes happiness to the viewer throughout all of history. Yet, throughout the years, artists have come to challenge society's preference of art. Artists like Gustave Courbet, Francisco Goya, and Ai Weiwei, who decided to take the challenge and start a new progression. Social critique through art is blatantly shown throughout each of their pieces: Stonebreakers, The Third of May 1808, and Sunflower Seeds. All three are similar yet different. Through comparison, a similar theme still remains present: Each artist 's social critique through their artwork. These particular types of artwork will show how one moment in history changed the view of millions throughout centuries of time. With the use of symbolism, positioning of figures, historical context, color usage, and many other elements, these three works of art make an inspiring statement to the world. The first painting, Stone Breakers by Gustave Courbet depicts two males that go to work breaking stone and wearing torn and tattered clothing. This job was usually done by the lower classes of society. At this time in France there was a rising of revolutionary thinking. The reason for the sudden outbreak involved many factors, the ones portrayed in this painting are the demands of the working classes. The figures are not arranged in the typical way. Parent-Child Relationships In No-No Boy In novel No–No Boy, Japanese–American writer, John Okada, tells a story centered around the life of a young Japanese–American boy named Ichiro Yamada who was seen and treated as a "No–No boy" during/after World War II. • 36. Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Spanish Civil War The twentieth century saw more proxy wars than any time in human history; great powers would flex their martial muscles in smaller theatres of conflict in order to test their own strengths and weaknesses without risking their international reputation as an aggressive nation. The Spanish Civil War served as a significant proxy for the totalitarian European powers in the interwar period; Fascist Italy andNazi Germany would support the right–wing nationalists while the Soviet Union and various International Brigades would back the alliance of the Republican government and Anarcho–communist organizations. Spain would serve as a testing ground for the armed forces of the European totalitarian states in which major military and ideological support would be given to the Spanish belligerents. In spite of initial setbacks in the initial military coup, Francisco Franco would eventually crush the Republican–Anarchist opposition and maintain authoritarian control of Spain for decades. His success was due in large part to the interests of Hitler and Mussolini in creating a friendly state in the Iberian Peninsula. Through contributions of manpower, military advisors and materiel from the Nazis and Fascists, Nationalist Spain was able to take advantage of the less–organized and squabbling Republican government forces. Francisco Franco Bahamonde : The Civil Of The Sacred Heart Francisco Paulino Hermenegildo Teodulo Franco Bahamonde, or more commonly Francisco Franco, was born on December 4, 1892 in Ferrol, Galicia, Spain. Franco was born to Nicolas Franco y Salgado–AraГєjo, a Spanish Naval Officer, and MarГa del Pilar Bahamonde y Pardo de Andrade, an upper middle class Roman Catholic. Until the age of 12, Francisco attended El Ferrol's Roman Catholic School of the Sacred Heart, a small private school run by a priest; he would then attend a naval secondary school. His family was very involved in the Spanish Navy, for six uninterrupted generations, almost two centuries, the Franco Family produced several naval officers. It was generally assumed that Francisco would follow in his family's footsteps, however, in 1906–1913 the Spanish government suspended admissions at Academia de Marina (The Naval Academy) due to shortages in funding. Francisco would no longer have the chance to follow in his family's footsteps, instead he began to attend Academia de InfanterГa (The Infantry Academy) in Toledo. In 1910, after three years, when Francisco was 17 years old, he graduated from the Infantry Academy. He entered the Spanish Army as a second lieutenant. • 39. Francisco De Goya Black Paintings Francisco de Goya's Pinturas negras, or Black Paintings, are some of the most grotesque and unsettling images in art history, with one painting in particular, Saturno devorando a su hijo, or Saturn Devouring One of His Sons, standing out the most amongst them all. With his wildly staring eyes, gaping mouth and half–eaten son in his hands, it makes one wonder what would drive an artist to create an image like this. Goya, however, was not uneducated in the horrors of the world, witnessing the travesties of the Peninsular War, the atrocities of the Spanish Inquisition, surviving two life threatening illnesses, with one leaving him completely deaf, and the death of six of his seven children. Perhaps it was one of these instances in particular that encouraged him to conceiving this disconcerting figure, or perhaps it was a combination of the three. At the beginning of Goya's career, in 1777, he was commissioned to create a series of tapestry cartoons from the Royal Tapestry Factory, designing some 42 patterns over five years. Some of his more popular paintings were originally tapestry cartoons such as The Parasol. His use of the popular Rococo style, brought him to the attention of the aristocracy of Spain. In 1789, he was appointed to court painter to Charles IV and then the following year, he became First Court Painter. His portraits of the king, queen and royal family, were anything but flattering. The conflicts represented a critical point for each respective nation, a time of either death or continuation for the countries. Both Whitman and Neruda exibit a key shared element in the poets' works of the concept of a cosmic rebirth illustrated in their poetry through a celebration of the perpetual cycle of life and death fostering optimism. This section mirrors Whitman's Drum Taps section of poetry "Eighteen Sixty–One" which also focuses on the war as it is reaching a critical point of expansion. Centered on the time of most profound national crisis, the poets use the image of gathering soldiers to validate their cause. The solider becomes the embodiment of the poets' war philosophies of reconstruction out of destruction. Neruda and Whitman concentrate on the soldier's sacrifice as requisite for societal salvation. Each poem reflects the desolation resulting from the beginning stages of the conflict and subsequently presents the gathering soldiers as a reason for hope. The sections begin submerged in the bleak solemnity of the turmoil of war. This represents a shift from the booming patriotism in the proceeding section in Drum Taps. Whitman's speaker shifts to a grave tone, lamenting the "Arm'd year–year of struggle, / No dainty rhymes or sentimental love verses for you terrible year" (lines 1–2). I don't think I was ever able to gain sea legs. Now, it is time for me just like our fellow countrymen abroad to serve Japan in expanding her influence. While aboard the ship, I was able to to study the guides. There was a lot of useful information in all of them. I believe I gained a great deal from How to Go to America Alone. We stopped in Honolulu to pick up more travelers. Many were fellow Japanese who were leaving Hawaii in search of higher paying jobs on the mainland. I must say, many of their stories did not quite represent those that had encouraged me to take this journey. Life on Hawaii must be very much different than on the mainland. I was told that the companies and plantations had effectively became powerful unchecked governing forces. Abuse of foreign labor is common. I must be positive and understand that the situation in the United States will not be the same. Hopefully, I will be able to succeed in my studies and make a great deal of money. It is ever important that I send my remaining earnings back home to support the family. I have changed as a person adjusting to life in America. Finding good work has been an arduous task.
