1. Interview with The Modern Age drummer.
So Paul, how do you feel about releasing your debut album with The Modern Age this summer?“Yeah it’s going to be interesting to see what people think of the album, and to see how well people adapt to our music. Hopefully we will do well.”What are your expectations for the new album release?“I really don’t know, because the single (Our Last Dance) went brilliantly with the public; however you can never be too sure about the rest of the album. It’s hard to predict what will happen, but I do feel confident because the album contains come good songs.”
I have also heard that a few members of the public have had disagreements with you too, is this true?“Yeah it’s true, Paul especially. Liam never gets into bother, he keeps to himself a lot, but if Paul disagrees with other people then it normally gets heated, but you know...these things happen when you’re in a rock band, but they are very pointless sometimes. One time, Paul got into a fight over someone knocking his Budweiser over! It’s silly, but he likes Budweiser (laughs).”Have there been any disagreements with the band members? Because I’ve heard a lot of rumours about the band not getting along.“There have been a lot of differences, to say the least. Joe sometimes gets into bother with other members of the band when he drinks too much, which is quite often *laughs*. There have been a few disagreements with our ex member, as he was replaced by Paul, which is why they don’t get along. But I still speak to him, which involves me and Paul getting into a few disagreements. But we get through them...eventually (laughs).”Who are your biggest influences?“Well my main influence is The Beatles, however a lot of my influences are indie bands, such as Oasis, The Courteeners, Blur...you know. I think our band sounds so different to other bands, just because of the different influences which the band members have, like Joe, who likes a lot of heavier rock songs, yet Liam prefers a lot of...weirder songs (laughs).”So what do you think about other drummers in the UK, cause we all know you have become a very recognisable drummer. What is your opinion on other drummers on the current indie scene?“Honestly, I don’t like it, I’m not trying to become big headed, but the drummers in the present music industry aren’t very good. If you go back 20 years ago, there were loads of amazing drummers. But at the moment, I think that drummers need to improve. People need to start learning instruments, and buy a drum kit at a young age, rather than doing nothing at all. You never know, there can be a lot of talented drummers out there, but we just have to wait for improvements.”
Are there any festivals that you are thinking about attending this summer?“Yeah, we have had a few offers, but we are not sure which ones we are going to do yet. We are going to discuss it amongst ourselves, and see what we decide to do.”Was it a shock for your first ever single to be so big?“Yeah, I couldn’t comprehend it, it was mad. The way that it adapted to our fans was just unbelievable.”
So what are your plans for next year?“It depends; we might be adding new tour dates, so we might still be touring into next year. Maybe towards the end of next year we can release a second album...but these are just ideas, we just have to see how it goes.”What festivals do you personally want to do?“I would like Glastonbury, because there have been a lot of huge bands there, so it would be good to be playing at the same festival as them. But Reading is looking appealing too...who knows?”
So I’ve heard that you have had trouble in the past with Linkin Park. What went on there?“Basically, I really am not a fan of that type of music, and we had a bit of a disagreement at the Isle of Wight festival (laughs).”Yes, it was a bit of a disagreement to say the least Paul.“Yeah, I just don’t like them at all, Honestly, I think they are rubbish! Linkin Park? They are just annoyingly bad! And they knew we didn’t like them so that’s why it got heated at Isle of Wight. But just cause we don’t get along I don’t wanna be compared to them, cause they are rubbish.”
So when you was making the album, where was you coming up with the songs? Was you a bit of a bedroom producer?“Bedroom producer? (laughs)Well Joe made a lot of the lyrics at home, we all did. But the instrumental side of it was all done in the studio.”
Above is the different questions and answers that have been put onto the main magazine article.
