Trauma is a leading cause of death for people aged 1-40 in the UK. There are three main phases of death from trauma: immediate from critical injuries, early from blood loss, and late from complications like sepsis. When responding to a trauma call, medical staff should focus on stabilizing the airway, breathing, and circulation while also protecting the cervical spine. Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) provides a standardized approach for assessing and treating trauma patients through an initial survey and secondary survey. The primary survey focuses on life-threatening injuries and interventions, while the secondary survey involves a full examination and ordering of appropriate tests and imaging.
