Wireless Network
• Need: Access computing and communication services, on the move.
• Infrastructure based Networks.
• Traditional cellular systems (base station infrastructure)
• Wireless LAN
• Infrared (IrDA) or radio links (Wavelan)
• Very flexible within the reception area; adhoc networks possible
• Low bandwidth compared to wired networks (110 Mbit/s).
Wireless Network (Continue…)
• Ad-Hoc Network
• Useful when infrastructure not available, impractical, or expensive
• Military applications, rescue, home networking
Terminology & Paradigm
• “Ad-Hoc”
• Formed or use for specific or immediate problems or need. – ad-hoc solutions
• Fashioned from whatever immediately available. – Encyclopedia Britannica.
Wireless Ad-hoc Network
• A wireless ad-hoc network is a decentralized type of wireless network.
• The network is ad-hoc because it does not rely on a pre-existing infrastructure,
such as routers in wired networks or access points in managed(infrastructure)
wireless networks. Instead, each node participates in routing by forwarding
data for other nodes, and so the determination of which nodes forward data is
made dynamically based on the network connectivity.
Mobile Ad-hoc Network
• Self-configuring network of mobile routers (and associated hosts) connected
by wireless links.
• This union forms a random topology.
• Routers move randomly free
• Topology changes rapidly and unpredictably.
• Suitable for emergency situations like natural or
human – induced disasters, military conflicts, emergency
medical situations, etc.
Differences to other wireless networks
Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET)
Applications of MANET
• Military arena: An ad hoc networking will allow the military battleground to
maintain an information network among the soldiers, vehicles and
headquarters.
• Provincial level: Ad hoc networks can build instant link between multimedia
network using notebook computers or palmtop computers to spread and share
information among participants (e.g. Conferences).
• Personal area network: A personal area network is a short range, localized
network where nodes are usually associated with a given range.
Applications of MANET (Continue…)
• Industry sector: Ad hoc network is widely used for commercial applications. Ad
hoc network can also be used in emergency situation such as disaster relief.
The rapid development of non-existing infrastructure makes the ad hoc network
easily to be used in emergency situation.

Issues In Ad-Hoc Network
• Medium access scheme
