Introduction
 Pumping systems account for nearly 20% of
the world’s energy used by electric motors
and 25% to 50% of the total electrical energy
usage in certain industrial facilities.
 Significant opportunities exist to reduce
pumping system energy consumption
through smart design, retrofitting, and
operating practices.
 The savings often go well beyond energy, and
may include improved performance,
improved reliability, and reduced life cycle
costs.
Saving of power
Types of VSD
1. Mechanical : Fixed speed motor
I. Mechanical variator
II. Fluid coupling
III. Magnetic coupling
IV. Eddy current coupling
2. Electrical:
I. DC motor:
A. Electrical commutation
B. Mechanical commutation
II. AC motor:
A. Asynchronous
B. Synchronous
Advantages of VSD
1. More efficient
2. Less power requirement, hence economical
3. Reduction in speed reduces hydraulic losses in the
impeller
4. Increases bearing life
5. Reduces vibration and noise
6. Reduces wear and tear of pump hence increases
pump life
Disadvantages of VSD
 Resonance conditions can cause excessive vibration
levels, which in turn are potentially harmful to
equipment and environment.
 Should never be used in systems requiring high static
heads compared to total head
 Not suitable for all type of load pattern
Conclusion
 Considering world energy crisis, use of VSD in
pumping system can give us beneficial and
economical results

Introduction  Pumping systems account for nearly 20% of the world’s energy used by electric motors and 25% to 50% of the total electrical energy usage in certain industrial facilities.  Significant opportunities exist to reduce pumping system energy consumption through smart design, retrofitting, and operating practices.  The savings often go well beyond energy, and may include improved performance, improved reliability, and reduced life cycle costs.

  • 7. Advantages of VSD 1. More efficient 2. Less power requirement, hence economical 3. Reduction in speed reduces hydraulic losses in the impeller 4. Increases bearing life 5. Reduces vibration and noise 6. Reduces wear and tear of pump hence increases pump life
  • 8. Disadvantages of VSD  Resonance conditions can cause excessive vibration levels, which in turn are potentially harmful to equipment and environment.  Should never be used in systems requiring high static heads compared to total head  Not suitable for all type of load pattern
  • 9. Conclusion  Considering world energy crisis, use of VSD in pumping system can give us beneficial and economical results
