1. The Proof’s In Your Portfolio! Pat Sorcic, M.A.E. Bryant and Stratton College
2. Potential employers want to know what skills you bring to their organization. Your portfolio shows evidence of your skills.
3. Interviewers want to hear about your strengths & ability to work well with others. Your portfolio will help you answer questions with confidence.
4. You don’t have to be an artist, photographer or architect to use a portfolio to demonstrate your strengths/skills to potential employers.
5. A Portfolio is an organized compilation of your skills and strengths that “proves” you have the tools necessary to achieve your career goals whether you are searching for a new job or trying to move forward in your career.
6. Goals for Today What to Gather How to Gather Portfolio Formats How to Present Maintenance
7. Before you start… Create a “containment unit” to keep all of your portfolio evidence in one place – you will then be able to choose which items you will use for each portfolio opportunity. More about this later…stay tuned!

15. Portfolio Presentation/Organization Paging or clicking around can show a lack of organization – know where everything is and be able to page to it quickly. (T.O.C.) Put your portfolio in an order that makes sense to YOU!
17. Portfolio Presentation/Organization Ask whether you can show evidence Don’t assume they will want to see your entire portfolio If they do not want to see it, don’t be offended
18. Maintenance Just as with anything that you own…you must schedule regular maintenance of your containment unit/portfolio to keep it up to date, relevant and ready to go!
19. Reflection Definitions Simply an opportunity through which one can learn from experience. Reflection can take numerous forms, and touch on an endless variety of issues. It furthers learning and inspires provocative thought and action Schön, D. A. (1983) The Reflective Practitioner: How professionals think in action. London: Temple Smith

Intro myselfPortfolio history at BSCStudent Success StoryWays to use employment interviews performance evaluation reflection tool
Your resume got you the interviewThe portfolio can help you focus It shouldn’t be everything – like a 4” binder. It should be a focused set of work
If you are in those particular fields – there are industry standards that you want to meet.Everyone else…Your portfolio reflects YOU.If you are creative – Let it show!If you are a computer whiz – Let it show!It can help show that you are the right fit.
In this definition – you will notice that it also points out moving forward in your career. If you use it for an employment search, you don’t want to just throw it in a corner once you get a job. Use it for performance evaluations As an employee As a managerUse it as you are planning your career path May help you see gaps that you can fill to make yourself more marketable in the future
Go through all 5 goalsThen do the match Today, I only want to light a little fire under you You will not leave here with a portfolio in hand It does take time and effort to put a quality portfolio together Want you to start thinking about how you can prove that you have the knowledge, skills and abilities for a particular job or promotion
When you are leaving the house for an interview or professional meeting or other portfolio opportunity, you shouldn’t be bringing the same evidence to every occasion – kind of like not sending the same cover letter to each job you are applying for.Your portfolio should be reflecting the skill set needed for whatever opportunity you are seeking. That is why a c.u. is important so that you have one place for everything and then you can pick, choose and organize for each event you are using it for.
In order to discuss this part of the process, sometimes it’s a little more clear if we use a celebrity type that most everyone knows…
Sometimes you have to be creative with your evidence. You may not have a “certificate” that shows you volunteered somewhere….maybe a print our of the organizations’ web page would be enough to show what the organization does and how you fit in.
Gathering is a continual process. It’s more than just a one afternoon project. You may be in the shower and think of a new way of presenting your evidence. Keep an open mind. You may already have some sort of C.U. with all of your evidence – YEA! When I first started mine, I was not that organized and I had to look in a variety of places to put my hands on evidence.
What are some targets?Emphasize TOP strengthsWhen I walk away, what do I want the audience to remember about me?Your evidence should always be your very best work.
Most common – ring binder with page protector sheets. 1 protector for each sheet – back to back the sheets – makes it easier for someone to review your work without taking it out and then trying to stuff it back into the protector. Easy to carry around Easy to show Not really 3-DWeb Page Easy to pull up anywhere Can host many different types of media Can only be seen with a connectionFlash Drive Very portable Need to create some sort of organization – do not just want a list of files
