• The 1994 F1 season will always be mourned for the loss of
the legendary Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, but it
was still a fiercely contested one, with X and Y separated by
just one point going into the final race. Though X was leading
during the race he went off and Y was on him in a flash. As Y

entrusted with the responsibility and since then it
has been passed onto Hamilton of Cincinnati, Ohio.

• The Lanterne Rouge is a distinction offered in
Cycling, most notably the Tour de France. The

Lantern” and refers to the red lantern hung on
the carboose of a railway train, which

none of the couplings were disconnected. Who
is this special distinction offered to?
It is offered to the rider who finishes last, rather than dropping out along the way.

• X grew up as a football fan living in poverty in Mexico. His
family escaped to Los Angeles as illegal immigrants. As he
became older, he became a busboy at a restaurant, while
also working part-time with his father in a gardening
business. A former Scottish footballer and scout spotted X,
playing for an amateur club in Los Angeles, before offering
him a tryout for Y, a Premier League club. X’s father did not
approve, claiming that the family business was more
important than sports. Without the money to travel, he lost
all hope of giving the tryout; however his grandmother with
her own secret money purchased X a plane ticket, which he
reluctantly accepted and departed for England. ID X and Y.

• In ice hockey, a Gordie Howe hat-trick is a variation of
the hat-trick. It is not exactly scoring 3 goals in match. It is
not even an official statistic. The first known Gordie Howe
hat-trick was achieved by Hall of famer Harry Cameron of
the Toronto St. Pats on December 22,1920.The namesake
of the achievement Gordie Howe, achieved it twice in his
NHL career. Rick Tocchet is the Gordie Howe hat-trick
leader with 17 recorded efforts. What does scoring a
Gordie Howe hat-trick actually require one to do?
Score a goal, make an assist and get
involved in a fight.

• X’s popularity has expanded and entered into
Texas Hold’em Poker jargon. If a player has an
ace and king as hole cards, it is referred to as
X. One reason is the common initials the hand
shares with X, but the more funnier reason is
that the hand has the reputation of not
playing well. It is thus said that an X hand,
“looks really good, but rarely wins.” ID X.

Excerpts from Pakistan captain Imran Khans autobiography
"we were playing a warm-up match against the West Indies
moments before the match, the secretary of the cricket board,
Shahid Rafi, informed me that the Chief Minister of Punjab, X,
was going to captain the team that day. I was taken aback but
then assumed that he would have a non-playing role. Therefore I
was shocked to see him walk out to toss the coin with Viv
Richards, dressed in his cricket whites; but there was a bigger
shock to come. He was going to open the innings with Mudassar
Nazar against the West Indies, one of the greatest fast-bowling
attacks in cricket history. Nazar wore batting pads, a thigh pad,
chest pad, an arm guard, a helmet and reinforced batting gloves,
while X simply had his batting pads, a floppy hat and a smile."

I Do Declare…
• The most cynical stretching of the laws took place in the much quieter surroundings of Worcester, when Brian Rose, captaining
Somerset did something that infuriated the spectators.
• Somerset travelled to Worcester knowing fully well that under the rules of the competition they would qualify for the quarter-
finals as long as they did not lose by a heavy margin. Even if they won, Worcester (and Glamorgan, who were seemingly assured of an
easy win over Minor Counties South) could only finish on the same number of points as Somerset; they needed a conclusive victory
to overtake Somerset by virtue of a superior strike rate.
• Rose realised that what he was planning was likely to cause an outcry, and checked with Donald Carr, the secretary of the Test
and County Cricket Board (the forerunner of the English and Wales Cricket Board), whether it was legal. The reply came that was
while it was within the laws as they stood, it was certainly against their spirit and that there would be ‘repercussions”.
In the month following this incident the editor of Wisden Cricket Monthly, David Firth, wrote that he hoped that the events at New Road
had restored some sanity to the game. He famously went on to write, "I have been waiting, with some trepidation, with six runs needed off
the final ball and a lot of money at stake, the bowler informs the umpire of a change of action and rolls the ball along the ground. Maybe
this dreadful vision will now vanish."
Sadly for Firth and the world of cricket, 20 months later Greg Chappell did just that at Melbourne.
What did Brian Rose do?

Rose won the toss, batted and after one over- a maiden bowled to him by Vanburn
Holder, which included a no-ball- he declared at 1 for 0. Worcester took 10 balls-
with Glenn Turner scoring two singles- to win a game that lasted 18 minutes,
including the statutory 10-minute break between innings.

absence of M.S.Dhoni decided to withdraw the appeal after
a consultation with Sachin Tendulkar.

• “If __________ was at the point, we forced him left and doubled him. If he was on the left wing,
we went immediately to a double team from the top. If he was on the right wing, we went to a slow
double team. He could hurt you equally from either wing—hell, he could hurt you from the hot-dog
stand—but we just wanted to vary the look. And if he was on the box, we doubled with a big guy.
• The other rule was, any time he went by you, you had to nail him. If he was coming off a screen,
nail him. We didn’t want to be dirty—I know some people thought we were—but we had to make
contact and be very physical.”

• ) Lord John Douglas was a Scottish nobleman known for his outspoken atheism. In March 1895, he
was areested and sued for criminal libel by Oscar Wilde whom he had publically accused of posing
as a somnodite. Libel charges could be bought as homosexuality was a crime then. He made the
allegation because he was angered by Wilde’s apparent ongoing homosexual relatioship with his
son, Lord Alfred Douglas. Douglas’ lawyers portrayed Wilde as a vicious older man who seduced
young boys into a life of degenerate homosexuality. Wilde dropped the libel charges when
Douglas’ lawyers informed the court that they intended to call several male prostitutes as
witnesses to testify that they had sex with Wilde. In accordance with the Libel Act 1843, proving
the truth of an accusation and a public interest in its exposure was considered as a defense against
a libel charge, and Wilde’s lawyers concluded that the prostitutes’ testimony was likely to do that.
• Douglas then won a counterclaim against Wilde for the considerable expenses he
had incurred on lawyers and private investigators in order to prepare his defense. Wilde was left
bankrupt, his assets seized and sold at an auction to pay the claim. Douglas then sent the evidence
to Scotland Yard, which resulted in charges of sodomy and “gross indecency” against Wilde, who
was convicted and sentenced to two years’ hard labour. His reputation destroyed. Wilde went into
exile in France and died at the Hotel d’Alsace in Paris.

  • 129. • The most cynical stretching of the laws took place in the much quieter surroundings of Worcester, when Brian Rose, captaining Somerset did something that infuriated the spectators. • Somerset travelled to Worcester knowing fully well that under the rules of the competition they would qualify for the quarter- finals as long as they did not lose by a heavy margin. Even if they won, Worcester (and Glamorgan, who were seemingly assured of an easy win over Minor Counties South) could only finish on the same number of points as Somerset; they needed a conclusive victory to overtake Somerset by virtue of a superior strike rate. • Rose realised that what he was planning was likely to cause an outcry, and checked with Donald Carr, the secretary of the Test and County Cricket Board (the forerunner of the English and Wales Cricket Board), whether it was legal. The reply came that was while it was within the laws as they stood, it was certainly against their spirit and that there would be ‘repercussions”. In the month following this incident the editor of Wisden Cricket Monthly, David Firth, wrote that he hoped that the events at New Road had restored some sanity to the game. He famously went on to write, "I have been waiting, with some trepidation, with six runs needed off the final ball and a lot of money at stake, the bowler informs the umpire of a change of action and rolls the ball along the ground. Maybe this dreadful vision will now vanish." Sadly for Firth and the world of cricket, 20 months later Greg Chappell did just that at Melbourne. What did Brian Rose do? +15/-10

He could hurt you equally from either wing—hell, he could hurt you from the hot-dog stand—but we just wanted to vary the look. And if he was on the box, we doubled with a big guy. • The other rule was, any time he went by you, you had to nail him. If he was coming off a screen, nail him. • 153. • ) Lord John Douglas was a Scottish nobleman known for his outspoken atheism. In March 1895, he was areested and sued for criminal libel by Oscar Wilde whom he had publically accused of posing as a somnodite. Libel charges could be bought as homosexuality was a crime then. He made the allegation because he was angered by Wilde’s apparent ongoing homosexual relatioship with his son, Lord Alfred Douglas. Douglas’ lawyers portrayed Wilde as a vicious older man who seduced young boys into a life of degenerate homosexuality. Wilde dropped the libel charges when Douglas’ lawyers informed the court that they intended to call several male prostitutes as witnesses to testify that they had sex with Wilde. In accordance with the Libel Act 1843, proving the truth of an accusation and a public interest in its exposure was considered as a defense against a libel charge, and Wilde’s lawyers concluded that the prostitutes’ testimony was likely to do that. • Douglas then won a counterclaim against Wilde for the considerable expenses he had incurred on lawyers and private investigators in order to prepare his defense. Wilde was left bankrupt, his assets seized and sold at an auction to pay the claim. Douglas then sent the evidence to Scotland Yard, which resulted in charges of sodomy and “gross indecency” against Wilde, who was convicted and sentenced to two years’ hard labour. His reputation destroyed. Wilde went into exile in France and died at the Hotel d’Alsace in Paris. • But, it is for something that a certain John Chambers did in 1865 and gained relevance ten years later which he, Lord John Douglas endorsed that he finds a mention in this sports quiz.
