3. Industrial Revolution: When and Where?
• It started about 1760 and it went
increasing to sometime between 1820 and
1840.
• It began in Great Britain and within a few
decades had spread to Western Europe
and the United States.
4. What was the Industrial Revolution?
• The Industrial Revolution was the
transition to new manufacturing
processes.
• This transition included going from hand
production methods to machines, new
chemical manufacturing and iron
production processes, improved efficiency
of water power.
5. Live conditions before the “IR”
• The population grew slowly, mortality rates were very
high, although compensated with high birth rates.
• The economy was agricultural: the main source of wealth
came from agriculture and livestock. The industry had
little importance and was handcrafted.
• Food was scarce.
• The trade was limited, predominantly made long away by
boat. Terrestrial communications were poor.
• Stock was few in number.
6. Industrial Revolution: Why?
• The causes of the industrial revolution
were that people needed to produce stuff
faster to sell it and gain more money with
it. It began with the steam machine and
the train.
7. Stages of Industrial Revolution:
1st PERIOD
• The first major step was the Industrial
Revolution which took place between
1760 and 1870. It was a period marked by
continuous inventions.
• In 1800, Volta invented the electric
battery.
• Stephenson invented the first steam
locomotive in 1814.

• In 1825 the first passenger line opened.
• In 1837, Morse invented the telegraph and
the first great impulse given to
communications.
• In 1863 the first subway system in the
world opens in London.

• It started in about 1870. The invention of
the dynamo gave a new boost to the race
for technological modernization, obtaining
hydropower through these dynamos
helped transform it into light.
