This presentation discusses four wheel steering mechanisms. It introduces different types of steering systems such as front wheel, rear wheel, and four wheel steering. It then explains the basic geometry and principles of four wheel steering including Ackermann steering geometry. The components of a four wheel steering system are listed as the chassis, tires, mechanical linkage, differential, and propeller shaft. Finally, it notes that four wheel steering improves steering response and vehicle stability at high speeds, and decreases turning radius at low speeds. Applications mentioned include racing vehicles and future vehicles.
2. INRODUCTION
Steering is the term applied to the
collection of components, linkages, etc.
which will allow a vessel (ship, boat)
or vehicle (car, motorcycle, bicycle) to
follow the desired course. An exception
is the case of rail transport by which rail
tracks combined together with railroad
switches (and also known as 'points' in
British English) provide the steering
function.
4. BASIC GEOMETRY
The basic aim of steering is to ensure
that the wheels are pointing in the
desired directions. This is typically
achieved by a series of linkages, rods,
pivots and gears.
6. PRINCIPLE OF WORKING
Ackermann steering geometry is a
geometric arrangement of linkages in
the steering of a car or other
vehicle designed to solve the problem
of wheels on the inside and outside of
a turn needing to trace outcircles of
different radius.
8. WORKING
Four-wheel steering (or all-wheel
steering) is a system employed by
some vehicles to improve steering
response, increase vehicle stability
while maneuvering at high speed, or
to decrease turning radius at low
speed.
9. WAYS OF STEERING THE REAR
WHEELS:
a) Disconcordant
steering (reverse
phase);
b) Conventional
steering;
c) Concordant
steering (same
phase)
11. FEATURES & APPLICATIONS
1. This mechanism is in the racing
vehicles where high vehicle stability is
needed at high speeds while
maneuvering.
