The Attributes of
                 God
        Noun: attribute |ˈatrəˌbyoōt| |ˈøtrəˈbjut| |ˈatrɪbjuːt|
a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or
inherent part of someone or something

God is bigger than your
     thoughts - much bigger -
     Job 26:14, whilst he was
     looking at creation
“And these are but the outer
     fringe of his works; how
     faint the whisper we
     hear of him! Who then
     can understand the thunder of
     his power?”

The Sufficiency of
                           God
    He is totally and
    absolutely complete
    within himself
    Nothing can be added or
    taken away from God, there
    is nothing that can compare
with Him or that in any way
    would make him better

Tuesday 22 November 2011
There is no limit to
  God - no box you
can put him in - we
  should be intimidated
  by him, even though
  he invites us to know
  him - the Bible calls
  this The Fear of
  the Lord

The Independence of God

 “God does not need us
 or the rest of creation
 for anything, yet we
 and the rest of
 creation can glorify
 him and bring him joy”
                           Wayne Grudem

4 Aspects
                      of God’s
                    Sufficiency
Tuesday 22 November 2011
1. God is responsible
                  for his Creation

Col 1:15-16 The Son is the image of the
invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For
in him all things were created: things in heaven
and on earth, visible and invisible, whether
thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all
things have been created through him and for
         him.

Telescope...clouds of cold gas and dust
sculpted by winds and radiation from a
hot, massive star. Still swaddled within
the cosmic clouds, newborn stars are
revealed - It is called the "Mountains
                                         of Creation"

Gas Pillars in the Eagle Nebula (M16): Pillars of
          Creation in a Star-Forming Region.
The picture was taken on April 1, 1995 with the
Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and
Planetary Camera 2. The color image is
constructed from three separate images taken
in the light of emission from different types of
atoms. Red shows emission from singly-ionized
sulfur atoms. Green shows emission from
hydrogen. Blue shows light emitted by doubly-
                 ionized oxygen atoms.

1.a. Creation Reveals
                    His Person
Ps 19:1,The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies
proclaim the work of his hands.
Evans suggests that the complexity and orderliness of
creation prove that God is all sufficient, that there is
none like him. God pre-existed creation and therefore
has self generating power, life within himself -
John 5:26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has
granted the Son also to have life in himself.
God created not because he had to but because it
brought him pleasure to do so
Tuesday 22 November 2011
1.b. Creation Reveals
                   His Pleasure
Eph 1:5 - he predestined us for adoption to sonship through
Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will
God does all things out of himself simply because it brings
him pleasure to do so - when God wants to do something
he does it - God can create anything he wants to
The Sovereignty of God will deal with what God wants to
do or not and when he does it.
God creates by speaking a word - therefore it is important
for us to know him, and what pleases him - then if what
we ask is line with his will, God speaks the word and it is
  done.
Tuesday 22 November 2011
2. God is independent
                 of his Creation
  Acts 17:22-25
Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said:
“People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.
23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of
worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:TO AN
UNKNOWN GOD. So you are ignorant of the very thing you
worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.
24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord
of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human
hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed
anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and
  everything else.

Tuesday 22 November 2011
2.a. No Outside
                              Influences
We all are influenced by many
things in our lives - family,
  friends, schools, education. We
  can explain our clothes in
terms of how the cotton was
  grown, who wove the fabrics,
  who stitched them, where we
  bought them.

Tuesday 22 November 2011
God has no such
  explanation - no
  influences made God
who he is - all that God
is he always was - and all
he will be he already is
  Nothing can be added to
  make God better.

Tuesday 22 November 2011
2.b. No Necessary
                       Relationships
God will be happy if you go to
church and worship - but he is
not affected if you choose to
stay at home - your pastor
  might not be happy though!
  God does not need your
worship - we are the one’s who
  benefit, who are privileged to
  worship him

Tuesday 22 November 2011
2.c. No External
                 Needs
God does not need us. We do need
  God.
Job 35:7-8 If you are righteous, what
do you give to him,or what does he
  receive from your hand?
Your wickedness only affects humans like
  yourself, and your righteousness only
  other people.

Tuesday 22 November 2011
Luke 17:10 tells us that at our
best our efforts are like those of
  unworthy slaves
Isa 40:15 Surely the nations are
like a drop in a bucket; they are
regarded as dust on the scales; he
weighs the islands as though they
  were fine dust.
  God’s self sufficiency also means
he is answerable to no-one -
extending from this is the fact we
do not tell God what to do, he
  tells us
Tuesday 22 November 2011
2.d. Independence
                        Implications
          1. You cannot help God out - nor can
          you threaten or intimidate him
          2. God can defend himself - Rom
12:19 - Do not take revenge, my dear friends,
but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written:
“It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
          3. God does not need us - however, he
does enjoy us and wants our fellowship

Tuesday 22 November 2011
3. We are dependent
              on God’s sufficiency
Creation is not independent of God:
Acts 17:26-29 - From one man he
made all the nations, that they should
inhabit the whole earth; and he marked
out their appointed times in history and
the boundaries of their lands. God did
this so that they would seek him and
perhaps reach out for him and find
him, though he is not far from any one
   of us.
Tuesday 22 November 2011
‘For in him we live and
    move and have our being.’
    As some of your own
    poets have said, ‘We are
    his offspring.’ “Therefore
    since we are God’s
    offspring, we should not
    think that the divine being
is like gold or silver or
    stone—an image made by
    human design and skill.

Tuesday 22 November 2011
3.a. Our Reference Point
We cannot know ourselves apart from God - we live
   and move in him.
All of our life is meant to be lived in relationship to God.
In him we find who we are - and all of our life is
appointed by God. We might strive for independence but
it is all about God’s will and purpose, what he predestines

Tuesday 22 November 2011
3.b. Our Inescapable God
In rebelling against God we simply
turn from enjoying his love to
incurring his wrath - whatever your
attitude you cannot get away from
   God.
The sun shines all the time - God
exists, you choose if you acknowledge
him, recognise or submit to him.
God is responsible for all of creation
   - yet independent of it, he can do
whatever he wants but we are totally
   dependent upon him
Tuesday 22 November 2011
“I believe in God
  like I believe in
  the sun, not
  because I can
  see it, but
  because of it all
  things are seen.”
            C. S. Lewis

Tuesday 22 November 2011
“I believe in God Severe solar
                           flare events can
like I believe in cripple satellites
the sun, not and pose a risk
because I can to astronauts in
                            orbit, and also
  see it, but have the
because of it all potential to
  things are seen.” knock out
                            power grids on
            C. S. Lewis Earth.

Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes
me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside
quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me
along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though
I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for
you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort
me.You prepare a table before me in the presence of
my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup
overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of
  the LORD forever
Tuesday 22 November 2011
4. We find our
    completeness only in God
  God’s sufficiency
  means we can only find
  our completeness in
  him. This is reiterated
  throughout the Bible
and Psalm 23 is a great
  example - we are
  sheep, He is the
  shepherd

Tuesday 22 November 2011
4.a. Spiritual Needs
  Ps 23:2-3a...restores my soul
God gives you back your life - turns
confusion into clarity, makes a mixed
up week a glorious one, turns
  tragedy into triumph
The broad way leads to destruction
  - with lots of parties on the way
The narrow way leads to life - less
crowded but Jesus is there to refresh
  and replenish you.
Tuesday 22 November 2011
4.b. Directional Needs

  Ps 23:3b - God takes a lost
  sheep and ‘finds’ them, puts
  the wrong path right.
Let God be God and he will
  direct you on the right
  path...he does this for his
  name’s sake.

Tuesday 22 November 2011
4.c. Emotional Needs
Ps 23:4 - shadows come over
us, we think things are bad
         (sheep sometimes see shadows
as night falling, even in the
middle of the day) - we might
         feel unbalanced, but God isn’t.
The staff pulled sheep out of
trouble - David knew all about
this in his life. The rod killed
         predators.
Tuesday 22 November 2011
4.d. Physical Needs
  Ps 23:5 - shepherds had a
  cloth and pouch inside their
belt - the pouch had fodder
  and grain in it for
  emergencies when a sheep
had to be rescued (it was laid
out on the cloth) - the
shepherd kept a cup too to
  give the sheep a drink.
  God always supplies the
  needs of his people
Tuesday 22 November 2011
4.e. Eternal Needs
Psalm 23:6 - Knowing Jesus Christ is good for
eternity! Your eternal destiny is in his hands.
Everything you need is covered by the sufficiency of
God - spiritual, directional, emotional, physical and
eternal - live under his authority, in accordance with
his will and by his word and God will demonstrate his
  sufficiency.

Tuesday 22 November 2011
Trials simply reveal God’s sufficiency
and our insufficiency - when we walk
independently of God he allows us
to be humbled of our self sufficiency
 - there will come a time when only
God can lift you up; something a
 doctor can’t heal, a job you can’t
find, a bill you can’t pay, a person
who doesn’t like you, fears you can’t
overcome - at that time you cry out
for God’s mercy, and he replies,
“Do you believe I am sufficient?”
Tuesday 22 November 2011
The sufficiency of God is
  not an abstract concept
it is a reality to live your
  life in.
  It involves giving your life
  to God for what he
wants for you - and all
  owing him to be
  sufficient for every need.
  We are only complete in
  God’s sufficiency

Tuesday 22 November 2011
Responding to the
                    Sufficiency of God
What do we do to ensure God
is our shepherd, that we are
  submitted to his will?
  1. Thank God that he created
you for his pleasure - and that as
he created the people around in
this way too ask him to give you
  his heart and mind towards
  them.
Tuesday 22 November 2011
2. What trials do you face
at present - ask God to
deal with each one as he
  sees best, in his sufficiency,
  and thank him for it.
  3. Are there areas of life
  where you have lived
  independently of God -
  prayerfully search your
  heart, repent and respond
  to what God reveals are
  your areas of
  independence.
Tuesday 22 November 2011
4. Locate a carpet
  of green grass and
  still waters - take
  time to be alone
  with God.

Gods attributes sufficiency

  • 1. The Attributes of God Noun: attribute |ˈatrəˌbyoōt| |ˈøtrəˈbjut| |ˈatrɪbjuːt| a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 2. God is bigger than your thoughts - much bigger - Job 26:14, whilst he was looking at creation “And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?” Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 3. The Sufficiency of God He is totally and absolutely complete within himself Nothing can be added or taken away from God, there is nothing that can compare with Him or that in any way would make him better Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 4. There is no limit to God - no box you can put him in - we should be intimidated by him, even though he invites us to know him - the Bible calls this The Fear of the Lord Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 5. The Independence of God “God does not need us or the rest of creation for anything, yet we and the rest of creation can glorify him and bring him joy” Wayne Grudem Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 6. 4 Aspects of God’s Sufficiency Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 7. 1. God is responsible for his Creation Col 1:15-16 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 9. An infrared view from the Spitzer Space Telescope...clouds of cold gas and dust sculpted by winds and radiation from a hot, massive star. Still swaddled within the cosmic clouds, newborn stars are revealed - It is called the "Mountains of Creation" Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 11. Gas Pillars in the Eagle Nebula (M16): Pillars of Creation in a Star-Forming Region. The picture was taken on April 1, 1995 with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. The color image is constructed from three separate images taken in the light of emission from different types of atoms. Red shows emission from singly-ionized sulfur atoms. Green shows emission from hydrogen. Blue shows light emitted by doubly- ionized oxygen atoms. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 13. 1.a. Creation Reveals His Person Ps 19:1,The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Evans suggests that the complexity and orderliness of creation prove that God is all sufficient, that there is none like him. God pre-existed creation and therefore has self generating power, life within himself - John 5:26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. God created not because he had to but because it brought him pleasure to do so Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 14. 1.b. Creation Reveals His Pleasure Eph 1:5 - he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will God does all things out of himself simply because it brings him pleasure to do so - when God wants to do something he does it - God can create anything he wants to The Sovereignty of God will deal with what God wants to do or not and when he does it. God creates by speaking a word - therefore it is important for us to know him, and what pleases him - then if what we ask is line with his will, God speaks the word and it is done. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 15. 2. God is independent of his Creation Acts 17:22-25 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.  24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 16. 2. God is independent God is independent of hisin not of creation Creation Acts 17:22-25 needinginanything Areopagus and said: Paul then stood up the meeting of the “People of Athens! I see created you are very religious. from the that in every way 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with toinscription:TO AN order for him this UNKNOWN GOD. So you being of the very thing you continue Iare ignorantto proclaim to you. worship—and this is what am going  24 “The GodGod does not God. who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and out of in temples built by human function does not live hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed necessity. anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 17. 2.a. No Outside Influences We all are influenced by many things in our lives - family, friends, schools, education. We can explain our clothes in terms of how the cotton was grown, who wove the fabrics, who stitched them, where we bought them. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 18. God has no such explanation - no influences made God who he is - all that God is he always was - and all he will be he already is Nothing can be added to make God better. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 19. 2.b. No Necessary Relationships God will be happy if you go to church and worship - but he is not affected if you choose to stay at home - your pastor might not be happy though! God does not need your worship - we are the one’s who benefit, who are privileged to worship him Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 20. 2.c. No External Needs God does not need us. We do need God. Job 35:7-8 If you are righteous, what do you give to him,or what does he receive from your hand? Your wickedness only affects humans like yourself, and your righteousness only other people. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 21. Luke 17:10 tells us that at our best our efforts are like those of unworthy slaves Isa 40:15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust. God’s self sufficiency also means he is answerable to no-one - extending from this is the fact we do not tell God what to do, he tells us Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 22. 2.d. Independence Implications 1. You cannot help God out - nor can you threaten or intimidate him 2. God can defend himself - Rom 12:19 - Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 3. God does not need us - however, he does enjoy us and wants our fellowship Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 23. 3. We are dependent on God’s sufficiency Creation is not independent of God: Acts 17:26-29 - From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 24. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 25. 3.a. Our Reference Point We cannot know ourselves apart from God - we live and move in him. All of our life is meant to be lived in relationship to God. In him we find who we are - and all of our life is appointed by God. We might strive for independence but it is all about God’s will and purpose, what he predestines Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 26. 3.b. Our Inescapable God In rebelling against God we simply turn from enjoying his love to incurring his wrath - whatever your attitude you cannot get away from God. The sun shines all the time - God exists, you choose if you acknowledge him, recognise or submit to him. God is responsible for all of creation - yet independent of it, he can do whatever he wants but we are totally dependent upon him Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 27. “I believe in God like I believe in the sun, not because I can see it, but because of it all things are seen.” C. S. Lewis Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 28. “I believe in God Severe solar flare events can like I believe in cripple satellites the sun, not and pose a risk because I can to astronauts in orbit, and also see it, but have the because of it all potential to things are seen.” knock out power grids on C. S. Lewis Earth. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 29. Psalm 23 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 30. 4. We find our completeness only in God God’s sufficiency means we can only find our completeness in him. This is reiterated throughout the Bible and Psalm 23 is a great example - we are sheep, He is the shepherd Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 31. 4. We find our completeness only in God God’s sufficiency means we can only find our completeness in him. This is reiterated throughout the Bible and Psalm 23 is a great example - we are sheep, He is the shepherd Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 32. 4.a. Spiritual Needs Ps 23:2-3a...restores my soul God gives you back your life - turns confusion into clarity, makes a mixed up week a glorious one, turns tragedy into triumph The broad way leads to destruction - with lots of parties on the way The narrow way leads to life - less crowded but Jesus is there to refresh and replenish you. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 33. 4.b. Directional Needs Ps 23:3b - God takes a lost sheep and ‘finds’ them, puts the wrong path right. Let God be God and he will direct you on the right path...he does this for his name’s sake. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 34. 4.c. Emotional Needs Ps 23:4 - shadows come over us, we think things are bad (sheep sometimes see shadows as night falling, even in the middle of the day) - we might feel unbalanced, but God isn’t. The staff pulled sheep out of trouble - David knew all about this in his life. The rod killed predators. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 35. 4.d. Physical Needs Ps 23:5 - shepherds had a cloth and pouch inside their belt - the pouch had fodder and grain in it for emergencies when a sheep had to be rescued (it was laid out on the cloth) - the shepherd kept a cup too to give the sheep a drink. God always supplies the needs of his people Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 36. 4.e. Eternal Needs Psalm 23:6 - Knowing Jesus Christ is good for eternity! Your eternal destiny is in his hands. Everything you need is covered by the sufficiency of God - spiritual, directional, emotional, physical and eternal - live under his authority, in accordance with his will and by his word and God will demonstrate his sufficiency. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 37. Trials simply reveal God’s sufficiency and our insufficiency - when we walk independently of God he allows us to be humbled of our self sufficiency - there will come a time when only God can lift you up; something a doctor can’t heal, a job you can’t find, a bill you can’t pay, a person who doesn’t like you, fears you can’t overcome - at that time you cry out for God’s mercy, and he replies, “Do you believe I am sufficient?” Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 38. The sufficiency of God is not an abstract concept it is a reality to live your life in. It involves giving your life to God for what he wants for you - and all owing him to be sufficient for every need. We are only complete in God’s sufficiency Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 39. Responding to the Sufficiency of God What do we do to ensure God is our shepherd, that we are submitted to his will? 1. Thank God that he created you for his pleasure - and that as he created the people around in this way too ask him to give you his heart and mind towards them. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 40. 2. What trials do you face at present - ask God to deal with each one as he sees best, in his sufficiency, and thank him for it. 3. Are there areas of life where you have lived independently of God - prayerfully search your heart, repent and respond to what God reveals are your areas of independence. Tuesday 22 November 2011
  • 41. 4. Locate a carpet of green grass and still waters - take time to be alone with God. Tuesday 22 November 2011
