SUMMARY
The shop is tolerably clean and tidy. The BUTCHER wears an almost white coat and his hair is
combed smoothly. He sings as he arranges his meat as he waiting for some costumers to come. He started
dividing his meat into a smaller piece with a big knife. Swinging the blade dangerously he cuts himself, as
he sees his bleeding hands, he wipes the blood off on the piece of meat and sucks the wound. A WOMAN
is heard singing as she approaches.
The Butcher greeted the woman and asked if she want to buy a meat, the woman said “Yes”. The
Butcher put the meat in the scales and adds some bones. As she saw what the Butcher did she angrily said
“What am I going to do with the bones? I’m not a dog”. Then the butcher put aside the bones and gives the
woman the meat she wanted. After the woman paid her meat, a girl enters, dressed in a dirty tattered flock
and carrying a basket. The girl said “Give me half a pound of meat, please. Nice----like you! As the woman
is going out she bumps into Dongo as he enters. They greet each other, and Dongo asked the woman what
is the quarrel between her and the Butcher, the woman replied “Aaah, nothing.” Dongo continued to ask
“Weren’t you complaining of ill-treatment? I heard you shouting.” then again the woman said that she was
only joking with the Butcher. After some talking they said goodbye to each other.
The girl who arrived early before Dongo asked the butcher to give her a meat with no bones on it
but the Butcher tried to give her a small amount of bones for her father. But the girl said “No! My father has
no teeth.” The Butcher said “Ooh, I see.” While the Butcher is busy with his client, Dongo was clearing his
throat loudly so that the Butcher may see him. As the Butcher saw him he greeted Dongo and asked how
he is.
2. Dongo replied “I’m okay. And you? The Butcher said “Not well at all, because you know you
haven’t endorsed my trading license. Please do it just now. Only a week is left before the closing date.”
Dongo stands as if ready to receive a gift. He looks away, pauses, and then looks back at his hand as if
surprised to see it empty. Dongo gets angry to the butcher; he said that the Butcher’s shop is not clean and
tidy, his apron is so dirty, and his hair is not combed smoothly. He said that before pestering him to get the
trading license, the Butcher must clean his place first and also his self.
While the Butcher is thinking of what happened a while ago he saw Kanubhai a Hindu trader. The
Butcher opens up his problem to the trader. The trader told him that the health inspector wants some
“BONES”, and yes! “BONES” and he realized what bones means.
After a week Dongo came back to the Butcher checking his shop. The Butcher gave the bones that
he wanted and suddenly signed his trading license. As the woman came back to buy a meat again, she
suddenly changed her mind as she saw the dirty place in the meat shop.
