TEDxKazimierzAdventure - Zero waste Christmas
1.
2. Christmas Facts
During Christmas people create 25% more trash!
Example of consumption just in the UK 2018:
• 125.000 tonnes of plastic packaging
• 13.250 tonnes of glass waste
• 277.000 miles of Christmas wrapping paper waste, which is
enough to wrap around the equator nine times
3. Christmas Facts
If every family reused just two feet of holiday ribbon,
the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet.
If every American family wrapped just 3 presents in re-used materials, it would
save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields.
The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football
field 10 stories high. If we each sent one card less, we’d save 50,000 cubic yards
of paper.

5. 1. Zero Waste Wrapping
• Use wrapping materials that can either be reused for daily use or for gift
wrapping next year
• Use wrapping paper made out of recycled paper
• Use reusable cloth ribbons instead of plastic bows
• Don't wrap gifts at all! Try to think of reusable decorative tins, baskets
or boxes
• Put the gift into the cotton bag
• Get creative!
6. 2. Zero Waste Gifts
• Choose gifts with an environmental message
- Refillable thermos bottles
- Shopping bags
- Cloth napkins
- Stainless steel straws
- Battery recharger or items made from recycled materials …
• Make your own Christmas gifts (have a look at DIY ideas!)
• Buy experience not things: vouchers, activity, tickets etc.
• Donate in someone’s honour
7. 3. Christmas Tree
• Get a real tree in a pot instead of plastic one
• Find it local
• Drop your tree off at a recycling centre or recycle it in
your own garden after Christmas
• Rent a tree
• Search for local projects
Volvo F5 Tech-moto: For every rented tree, there will be
10 new trees planted
8. 4. Christmas decoration
• Don’t buy cheap and bad-quality decoration shipped around the globe
• Get it second hand
• Make it your own
- dry fruits like dried orange slices hung with thread
- cinnamon sticks
- pinecones
- salt dough stars
9. 5. Greeting cards
“More than a billion Christmas cards – 17 for every man, woman, and child –
will be delivered each year. That’s enough to stretch around the world five
times.”
• Make your own cards
• Send electronic cards
• Try to look for eco friendly projects, for ex. Paper Culture:
they use post-consumer waste and wood alternatives for their cards and
envelopes, and plant a tree for each order to offset their carbon footprint
10. Food waste during Christmas
83 million dollars worth of food was wasted during Christmas in 2014!
Christmas dinner components wasted:
• 263,000 turkeys
• 17.2 million Brussels sprouts
• 11.9 million carrots
• 11.3 million roast potatoes
OVER 4 MILLION OF FESTIVE DINNERS ARE THROWN AWAY EACH YEAR
12. How not to waste food during Christmas
• Have a plan for your food
• Use the leftover food in other dishes
• Freeze the food for later
• Pay attention to packaging
• Buy local
• Go Vegan
13. 1) Plan your menu and be realistic about portion sizes. Take into account that the guests have been
"snacking" , children portions are way smaller, think about quests with special diet and total amount of food
served. If you are not sure of how much food will be required you may use the LOVE FOOD Hate Waste site
and calculator available in there: https://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/what-to-do.
When planning menu think about storage and leftovers - have a ready plan on how to use the leftovers and
where to store them.
2) Make sure you’ve got some containers in which you can freeze excess food.
3) Pack the food that left after the gathering (also the unfinished) and give it to the guests.
4) If you still have some food left, bring it to Jadlodzielnia (Foodsharing place) on Kamienna , Paulińska 28
or a community fridge in Tytano 10 / post on the Foodsharing group on FB describing what you’ve got left so
someone can pick it up from you:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1149542825120169/. Even if you’re
bringing it to Foodsharing place, you can still take a picture of what you’re leaving there and post on the FB
group.
5) Share your meal with those who don’t have one. You can leave food in the distribution points so it’ll be
delivered to the one in need or ask the driver to pick it up from your home: http://podzielmysie.pl/
14. Some last tips...
• Focus on the true meaning of Christmas!
• Less is more!
• Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones
• Be creative on when you can cut the amount of waste
• Turn off all the Christmas lights when leaving home or going to sleep
• Don’t expect the first year to be easy!
