Environmental advocacy group focusing on renovating existing sporting facilities to become more sustainable. We are the link between stadium management, engineers, and the companies that provide solutions to ensure the most efficient, sustainable, and most environmentally friendly methods are implemented in operations of stadiums and sporting facilities. We are a registered 501(C)(3) non-profit environmental business organization designed to work with contractors and engineers in an effort to find ways to renovate existing stadiums, and then educate and provide solutions to the management of stadiums in methods to maintain efficiency in the most economically and ecologically effective manner.
The Green Team was formed by a group of graduating business students with a deep concern for the environment and a love for sports. We saw the environmental impact that can be created when the average 50,000 fans attend a football game at their local stadium. We began to think about how many times during a typical NFL game, stadium toilets are flushed, how many light bulbs are on constantly for the duration of the game, and how much waste is created by fans. All these components of stadium operations create a giant environmental impact.
The upcoming Olympics' Aquatic Center, commonly referred to as the Water Cube for its translucent, bubbly design, had its long awaited opening last week for tourists and early testing of the pools. From the looks of it, it looks very green, somewhat strange and otherworldly, and if its environmental claims are correct, it could lead other cities to build more environmentally friendly buildings.
Systems such as touch-free 1.6-gallon toilets which use no more than 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) and have multiple levels of flush power that can alternate between .8 and 1.58 gpf, waterless urinals which use a sealant liquid in the units’ cartridge instead of water and faucet sensors in the faucets which eliminate water lost when turning faucets on and off are the three main technologies we will be used to reduce water usage. The use of recycled water and rainwater harvesting on the Stadium roof will also be implemented in Qaulcom Stadium to reduce the need for outside water sources. The harvesting of rainwater on the Stadium roof will be used for the irrigation both inside the stadium on the field and outside the stadium in the landscaping. The use of recycled water through the use of Grey Water technologies which filter used water will be used in the restrooms where the water from the sinks will be recycled and used again in the sinks and toilets.
Flag Football Game The Green Team has joined with the San Diego Chargers to put on the first annual Flag Football Game. This even, which is open to all San Diego residents, will be head on November 30 th at Qualcomm Stadium. To register your 7-10 member team, participants will need to visit the Green Team website at www.greenteamsd.org/flagfootball and click the “Sign Up My Team” button. Every member of your team must be entered along with their age, address and contact information. All participants must print out a liability form which must be filled out and sent into the Green Team at the address provided. Furthermore, teams will need to rank themselves on their ability level and specify a team leader who will be contacted with schedule times. Any team that does not seem to fit into their rank will be moved into the appropriate rank. Ranking will consist of 3 levels( A, B, and C) with A being Under high school level, B being high school level and C being college and above skilled players. A one hundred dollar entre fee will be required for each team which will be used to raise money needed for The Green Team. The first round of games will be held on the weekend of November 22 nd and 23 rd . The tournament style games will eliminate teams until there are 8 teams left for each letter ranking. The final round will bring these remaining teams together on November 30 th . The Charger team will be out meeting the finalist, giving coaching tips and having fun with the rest of the participants. The public is also encouraged to join us for this day of fun with five dollar tickets sold at the stadium and online at The Green Team website.
The goal of The Green Team is to raise money to make the renovations to Qualcomm Stadium a reality and to raise awareness in the community of the solutions available and the necessity of these steps in order to create a winning environment to play in both inside and outside the stadium. We are focusing on three areas in the stadium to reduce the environmental footprint created by 71,000 fans per game.
