2014 Exam which is scheduled to be conducted
on 24 August 2014 by the Union Public Service
Commission. The candidates must be facing the
trouble of what to study and what not for the
IAS Prelims Exam which consists of two papers:
General Studies Paper I and General Studies
Paper II. Indian Polity and Governance forms
an essential part of the IAS Exam Syllabus and
needs to be studied in a thorough manner.
3. Books to be followed :
• The most important source for this section is
the NCERT Books for Class 11 and 12 for Indian
Polity. DD Basu can be referred for studying the
Constitution of India. After going through
these, the candidates must thoroughly go
through at least one standard text book for
Indian Polity like M. Laxmikanth. Newspapers
should be regularly read in order to keep
abreast with the recent happenings related to
governance.
4. Focus Areas :
The questions asked from Indian Polity and
Governance can be related to the following areas:
Fundamental Rights and Fundamental Duties
Directive Principles of State Policy
Procedure of passing various bills in Parliament
All important aspects of Executive, Legislature
and Judiciary, their parts, powers and functions
The election/appointment and removal of
prominent Government authorities like the
President, Supreme Court and High Court
judges, Governor, etc.
5. Other important Constitutional bodies and
authorities like Attorney General, Finance
Commission, CAG, CVC, Election Commission
etc.
Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Governance
Important legislations passed in past few years
Planning- procedure, Planning Commission, etc.
Non constitutional and Statutory bodies of the
Government
Important amendments to the Constitution

Castes and Scheduled Tribes, Minorities,
Disabled etc.
Various
important
Committees
and
Commissions under the Constitution
6. • The questions asked from Indian Polity and
Governance might be factual but are framed in
a complicated format. The question is followed
by two or more statements out of which the
correct or incorrect statements have to be
selected. This is quite a confusing task and the
candidates need to know about all the
statements in order to mark the correct option.
Hence, clarity of concepts is absolutely
necessary. Superficial knowledge can land the
candidates into trouble by luring them to mark
the incorrect option based on half knowledge.
