I believe in the total person concept. To me a leader must have strong values in order to succeed. I am a proud father and husband. I love sports some times too much for my wife’s taste.I’m an animal lover. But dogs to me are special.Proud Gulf War Veteran. I served 5 years in the Navy and 5 in the reserves.Proud Professional MSA Student! My mom says I have a great smile.
Gandhi was able to bring independence to to India with a message of non-violence. To me this is a sign of an incredible leader. Image source: www.scrapetv.com from google imagesIn sports Phil Jackson stands out, for one simple fact, he got the job done with very difficult personalities around him, he was able to get them to play together for the team and win. Image source: www.baltimoresportsreport.com from google imagesSteve Jobs was a pioneer in the personal computer industry. He founded Apple and was fired from the company in 1986. He was hired again 10 years later and become CEO of company once more. Jobs was able to bring Apple back with creativity and innovation. He lead Apple to become the most successful IT company in the world today. Image source: www.apple.com from google imagesIn President Roosevelt, we see a person that faced incredible challenges during his twelve year tenure as president. These challenges include the great depression and WWII while battling polio. He brought the country together to get out of the economic crisis and win the war. After WWII the United States became a Super Power. He had a great way of bringing people together to benefit the cause. Image source: www.presidentprofiles.com from google imagesMilitary leaders include Generals Eisenhower & Patton. These are leaders with proven records for getting results and having their troops follow them unconditionally.Gen. Patton Image source: www.nndb.com from google imagesGen Eisenhower Image source: www.familypedia.wikia.com from google imagesDuring Brazil’s Lula Da Silva’s presidency, the country was able to become energy independent, grew their economy to the point that it is the number one economy in South America and now a major player in the world. Image source: www.cindysense.com from google imagesI believe strongly in these values:Tell the truth, no one likes to be lied to. Confidentiality must be taken into consideration. (Need to know)Trust must be established with the team in order to have a healthy environment (Life, work, etc)Fairness! I treat everyone the same, I discourage the teacher’s pet syndrome. Your actions and performance will be your measuring stick.I was lucky early in my career, I had great supervisors and managers that shared their knowledge. I enjoy doing the same with my teams and I expect themto do the same in the futurePersonal Values are very important, but Integrity to me stands above most. I have a passion to motivate and inspire my team or athletes to reach and surpass their goals.
Image source: www.wipeoutmarketing.com from google imagesMy friends, current and former colleagues tend to describe me as a person that: - likes to work in an even playing field as a leader and a follower (Fair)- Is a multitasker that gets the job done (Productive)- has laser focus and gives his heart and soul for the task (passion)- Commits to the team, organization or task (Committed)- Is upfront will tell you the truth and knows a person to trust. Image source: www.cutcaster.com from google imagesDaniel Goldman, (2000) Leadership That Gets results, Harvard Business Review March-AprilI use both the Affiliative and Coaching Leadership Styles. I am a person that looks at the big picture and enjoy moving people to the vision.I also enjoy developing personnel. This brings me a lot of personal and professional satisfaction.
Image source: www.jaipals.com from google imagesMy philosophy is based on who I am and what I passionately believe. The words motivate, inspire and accomplish are important because those are thing that I love to do and that I constantly strive for.The second sentence explains the environment that I will create for my team to succeed.
Image source: www.gordonmarcy.com from google imagesLegacy is about what you leave behind and how you will be remembered. But, before moving on, all pot holes most be covered and a plan must be established for the future after departure. When the subject of succession came up in the modules, I found it very interesting and important, a lot people leave positions and they don’t plan their exit. I have been in that situation, a department was dumped on my lap. I during the process, I made sure that I prepared the next person in line. This gave me more flexibility and I had someone that I felt comfortable with running the department when I was gone.
Image source: www.changetheworld101.com from google imagesMy legacy statement has to do with Paying it forward. If you learn something pass it on. By guiding and mentoring a leader can achieve a lot. And if the members of the team pass along the knowledge, the legacy continues.
Image source: www.grayuk.com from google imagesLike any person that needs rehab, a leader must accept his flaws in order to strengthen those areas and become better.I need to improve in all these areas in order to keep climbing the latter of success.I am a lot more patient than I used to be. Maturity, fatherhood, and marriage will help in this area.I tend to become overly creative and I end up with complicated solutions.Like it reads in the picture. I need to become a more active listening. I like to get to the point and sometime I don’t pay attention to the details, that may be importantI have improved in my Time Management skills, but It is a daily challengeI take on a lot of responsibility and sometimes I don’t want to let go of work dues to trust issues.Every now and then I rush to assume what the conclusion may be. Image source: www.smallbiztrends.com from google imagesI need to stop reacting and start acting. I thing the decision of enrolling in the PMSA program was a good start.I sometimes focus on the end result too much and not on the task that will get me to the end result.I have to start saying NO! more often. I sometimes take on too much work.Control the free open door policy, common trait of an ENFJLearn to recognize a situation and apply the correct leadership style.Pearman, R. (1999).
