Audience Profile
By Saskia Long
Things to consider when audience profiling:
 Age/ Gender/ Race/ Sexuality
 Education
 Occupation
 Annual Income
 Disposable Income
 Current Lifestyle
 Culture
 Media Interests
 Buying Habits
 Loyalty to Brands
Audience Profiling
When looking at previous ‘Pearl & Dean’ profiles I noticed that
the target audience for the slasher genre and horror films in
general was between the 15-24 age group. The reason for this
is because it’s the age when they are beginning to discover
themselves therefore try experiencing new things and
emotions. They are the age that want to feel an adrenaline
rush and they seek thrill. Horror movies can give them this
crazy feeling of something that they’ve never felt or seen
before. The younger the audience the more open they are to
scenes of a violent, involving blood and guts. Whereas an
older audience would think more negatively because they are
more sensitive to scenes of an unnatural nature. I am able to
have a low budget but still an adoring and strong fan base.
Age
Using stereotypes, the male gender would be more
interested in the slasher genre. When previously looking at
the ‘Pearl & Dean’ audience profiles, it seemed that males
were more open to this genre. Boys are thrill seekers, they
love gore, torture, violence because its something new to
them, girls (once again stereotypically) get more frightened,
therefore I would aim my trailer at males. Females
stereotypically prefer films of a softer nature eg. romance,
drama.
Gender
In this society, the topic of religion and sexuality has
become less of a taboo subject. In terms of my slasher
trailer and race, I think it will attract all races because
teenage boys despite black, white, mixed race will all be
attracted to my slasher trailer. For sexuality, I believe
heterosexual males will be most attracted to my trailer
because gay males are known stereotypically to be
slightly wimpy and more feminine.
Race/Sexuality
Demographics
By breaking the population into six social classes, I can determine what social class I want my trailer to be
aimed at, this will help me in further research of my audience eg income, occupation and lifestyle etc. Being
that my audience is 15-24 year olds, I would expect that some of my audience are still in full time education,
the job occupations that some will have won’t be that advanced. Therefore after delibration I have decided
the three main classes I will aim my trailer at would be D (working class), C2 (skilled working class) and C1
(lower middle class). The reason I have chosen these three social classes as these are the ones that I believe
these 15-24 year old would come from. These are the type of classes that experience a lot of rebellion and
on the news we always hear about people from these classes in fatal situations so they may be able to
relate to the violence in horror movies. Also these are the classes where 15-24 year olds go out to cinemas
in their spare time to especially watch horror movies. With higher classes I believe that they would have a
very negative attitude to the horror aspects in a slasher trailer. I didn’t chose the lowest class either
because they can’t afford to go out and see films, they also have other interests.
Psychographics
From this table, I am able to find out about their behavior and
personality traits and further more about their viewing and
spending habits. This table is called the ‘Cross Cultural Consumer
Characterisation’ and was created by the advertising agency
Young & Rubican. It helps put the audience into groups and then
see where they are in society. As I have already decided to have
a young audience (15-24 year olds), I have clarified that those are
the type of people are the ones that seek adventure, even on
this chart it says that young people (mainly students) are
explorers (which I complete agree with). Those are the ones
that seek thrill adventure, new experiences, open to new things,
therefore they are the explorers. The people also in the category
are very frequent users of technology, using video games
related to the horror genre, they read magazines/books that are
also related to this genre and they listen to heavy metal music
(especially males) that is very in tune with the horror genre as it
features some very dark aspects covered a lot in horror films.
On online sites such as YouTube, you are able to read user
comments and see who they are mainly from and why, which
audience is most intrigued in this genre – which was mainly
young adults. If its spoken about a lot on the media then this
age group will happily buy into seeing this particular film
because they are open to new and exciting things.
