Editor's Notes
CP: Hello everyone and welcome to today’s SwissTalk with Zurich!
We hope you are doing well, and we are delighted to have so many of you joining us here – and of course hope to see you in person soon again.
CP: For those of you who don’t know us yet, we are all three based here in NYC and for today we have chosen our favorite backgrounds, all within less than 1hr from Zurich.
Myself – here with the background of the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen, Natalie on Mount Rigi in Lucerne and Maite in Rapperswil.
We are your one stop shop for all you need for your business events and are happy to guide you through any RFPs and assist you on anything Swiss related.
Now let’s get to today’s SwissTalk! We have an exciting session with our partner destination Zurich coming up and will cover more information about Switzerland including the current situation after we learnt all about the MICExcitement in Zurich.
NH:
Before we begin, let’s quickly go through some technicalities in case you are new to our SwissTalks.
Our aim is to make the next 30 minutes interactive and fun and therefore suggest you change your chatbox setting to ‘send to panelists and all attendees’ so everyone sees your comments and questions and we can engage with each other.
We will also use the polls twice and will also record this session and send it to you tomorrow.
We appreciate you sending us your questions in the registration form for today which we will try to cover as much as possible, starting with the question of direct flights into Switzerland.
CP:
Indeed, we have some good news that many airlines, including, SWISS Intl. Airlines will expand schedules from mid-Summer, and re-introduce long-haul routes that were recently not served, such as Boston, LA & Miami and we hope that more will follow soon as well. And of course, if your clients are already in Europe, Natalie has more good news for you.
Updates (not to be said, just FYI)
United Airlines: From March 7, the Dreamliner will once again be flying from Zurich to Washington D.C. - initially three times a week.
SWISS: On the long-haul front, service will resume on the Zurich-Miami (Florida) route from 28 March with up to five weekly frequencies.
SWISS: Up to seven weekly services will also be offered between Zurich and Boston on the US East Coast from 1 May onwards
SWISS: Up to five weekly services will be offered to Los Angeles on the US West Coast from 2 May onwards.
NH: Yes, whether your group flies into another European destination for a better flight connection or a dual destination program, or you may have participants located in Europe already, Switzerland has great train connections as you can see here, for example from Paris or Milan it’s only 4hrs to Zurich.
And Zurich is not only easily accessible from European destinations but is also the perfect hub to travel within Switzerland.
CP: Yes, that’s right Natalie, you can see how quickly you can travel from this metropolitan city to any other corners of Switzerland – including my neck of the woods, which is the Zermatt area, where the famous Matterhorn is based, it only takes 3.5hrs and is a truly spectacular journey!
NH: Today is all about Zurich though, and we’d love to know who of you has been to Zurich? Please use the chatbox to share with us. Maybe in transit only, or private or even with a group?
(NH to comment on chatbox)
CP: Those of you who have been (or had groups) may already know our guest speaker, and if not, it is now my pleasure to introduce Vanessa from the Zurich CVB. Vanessa, the floor is yours!
If you think about your last MICE programs, most likely back in 2019, what would you say that your guests remembered long after they left? Please write your experiences in the chat.
This is exactly what our experience has been, as well.
In Zurich, we believe the true value of service is found in unique, unexpected and meaningful moments such as the ones that you have just shared.
In this presentation I would like to add highlights from some of my own meaningful moments to our list in order to show some ways in which your next event can become another memorable experience in Zurich.
.
One thing that I think that we can all agree contributes to creating memorable experiences, is having sights and activities that are easily accessible from a central location.
I will only mention a few of our City highlights, starting with the picture of the Uetliberg on the top left side.
As I think best way to take in a city is from above. It’s only a short train ride from the Main Station and a 10’ minutes walk that you reach the Uetliberg lookout with a spectacular view over the city, lake and the Alps.In summer, there’s plenty to discover on marked hiking routes and in winter, even bette, the hiking trails to the summit are converted into sledding runs. And although I know the number one sport in North America is football, I’d like to draw your attention to the original FIFA World Cup Trophy which you see on this picture here – The trophy is on display at the FIFA soccer museum in Zurich. It is an interactive museum for young and old and celebrates the rich heritage of soccer. And even if you are not passonate about soccer like me, it was an unexpected great experience, which I can only recommend.
And a must do for a visitor in Zurich is a stroll through our medieval Old town. Starting at the Zurich Main Station, the best way to discover the old town is by foot. You reach the famous Niederdorf which is part of the old town after a 5 minutes walk. The Niederdorf is a pedestrian zone and very popular for shopping as it features mostly boutique stores and smaller brands. Some of them you’ll only find in Switzerland. In the evening, this part changes into a nightlife district with many bars, restaurants and street artists.
So you see in Zurich, everything is so close. And that means as well that the first highlight awaits you the moment that you leave the airport.
I am talking about The Circle.
So now, please join me in welcoming the Director of Sales at The Circle, Mr. Paul Dirksen. Paul is going to lead us on a virtual tour of the Convention Center. Paul, please take it away.
Thank you so much, Paul for that inspiring tour of the Circle. Paul will be live with us until the end of this presentation to answer your questions.
But for now, let’s move on to our next exciting experience.
The first highlight that I would like to draw your attention to, is the all-in-one experience that can be had at the Pavillion Le Corbusier.
Our last customer event with around 100 guests took place at the museum that was the last building designed by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier.
The museum is located along the shores of Lake Zurich, so you can imagine yourself standing before the breath-taking view of the lake and the Alps. After some time mingling with the other guests, we went inside for a standing dinner which was served in a setting surrounded by the exhibition. That was very impressive.
This is a moment that our customers could not have experienced without our organizing efforts.
And in what other city can your guests be served wine from a drinking fountain? In Zurich, we make it happen.
Is there anyone with us today who attended the Meeting Trophy in 2019?
If so, I am sure you’ll remember the welcome reception that we had at Seebad Enge - with attendees putting the pools build in at the location to good use once all of the formalities were over. It was one of those exciting experiences that we still talk about in the team.
And last but not least a very exciting moment for our guests is when they arrive at the LHoC after travelling there by boat across Lake Zurich.
But before handing over to my colleague Stephan, the Sales Manager of the LHoC, I would like to know from you, what you think will be a memorable moment for your guests in Zurich?
Wow Stephan. Thank you very much. I am sure, now, all of us have a big appetite for chocolate. Stephan will be live with us until the end as well to answer your questions.
But for now would we like about your opinion again. What do you…
So, which other destination can invite you to play around with the best chocolate in the world, mingle by a lake after an insightful congress or even enjoy the sunset from the top of a house mountain with a spectacular view.
I hope we could show you, how different and extraordinary a MICE outing to Zurich can be, if you have the right partner onsite, focusing on our very own interpretation of the “E” in MICE
Before coming to the end, I’d like to invite you to sign up through the link as we would love to send you your personal experience from Zurich. We justed posted the link in the chat as well.
.
Last but not least, please join me in thanking Paul and Stephan for the outstanding virtual tours they gave us. We still have a few minutes left before I hand over to my dear colleagues from the SCIB team for some more Swiss updates. So I invite Paul and Stephan to join me on the virtual stage to answer your questions.
In addition, please connect with us on LinkedIn and let’s stay in touch. We would really love to welcome you in Zurich very soon again.
CP: Thank you Vanessa, Paul and Stephan!
Personal comment on presi and presenters…
For the next 5 minutes we will now give you a quick update on the current situation in Switzerland as well as a little refresher in case you are not too familiar with our country.
NH:
Thank you, Caroline.
Firstly, if you listened to our last SwissTalk, you know that Switzerland has been in a light lockdown since January, but has started to slowly loosen it a bit, so for example stores and museums are back open now but as you may know, American and Canadian citizens are still not allowed to enter the country. Therefore, we will wait with sharing any details about quarantine and testing until travel restrictions are lifted and it makes sense to do so. Should you be interested in that though, you will find all relevant links in tomorrow’s followup.
But now to what you are seeing on this slide. We actually have a dedicated page on our website now for hybrid events. You can find tips and tricks, how-to’s and case studies to help you make your hybrid event a success. So have a look at it and let us know what you think!
CP: Thanks Natalie.
From what we are hearing, bookings are increasing, and we believe Switzerland has a lot to offer, also in terms of privacy and safety for your groups. Last time we spoke about the Churchill train and you can actually also just privatize a train carriage and hold a meeting or welcome breakfast for your group in a very unique way to get from A to B. One car fits about 30pax and there are two of these available, so this would be for smaller groups of course.
MV: Thank you for this great idea! I always wanted to participate in a meeting in a train like this!
And for the group who wants that special treatment, it is also possible to rent a hotel where your group can have all the privacy and safety they require.
For example the Chedi hotel, nestled in the Swiss Alps in Andermatt, only 1.5hrs from Zurich, is ready to welcome you and your group exclusively. The trendy luxurious property has 123 elegant rooms and suites, meeting rooms equipped with the latest technology, four excellent restaurants and bars and the modern Spa and Health Club.
NH: And if you would rather leave the hotel for an off-site lunch or gala dinner, you can also privatize a whole street, a mountaintop or a village for a culinary outdoor experience, isn’t that something unique! We can also do this in the midst of the vineyards if you prefer to be right at the source of our delicious Swiss wine.
CP: I certainly can’t wait to go back and enjoy the stunning views and of course sip on a delicious Swiss wine!
But until we can clink glasses in Switzerland, we’d love to answer any remaining questions you may have! So go ahead and use the chatbox to ask anything you’ve always wanted to know about Switzerland and we will try to answer as well as possible.
MV: While you type your questions, let us get you excited for our next SwissTalk with Montreux. Did you know that in this beautiful vineyard region of Switzerland, a lot of well-known musical artists have actually lived and recorded famous songs?
We have therefore decided to create a Spotify playlist of over 100 songs by North American artists that have a Swiss connection. So have a listen and try to guess the connections. You can find some of the stories on our leisure FB page if you search for MySwitzerland.
CP: Thanks Maite and Natalie, we hope we sparked your interest in our SwissTalk with Montreux next month and would love to have you join us!
So now let’s see if we have any questions, either for Vanessa, Stephan or Paul – or Switzerland in general.
We will stay on for a few more minutes if there are still any burning questions but for now, we’d like to thank you all for your time today, we hope we were able to transport you to Switzerland and in particular to Zurich.
Our special thanks again to Vanessa, Paul and Stephan to show us what’s waiting for us!
We look forward to having you with us for our upcoming SwissTalks and you can of course always reach out to us in the meantime.
For now, please stay safe, healthy and positive
(Just in case there’s a comment about Burka: “We represent an open Switzerland, which welcomes any guest, and are against any measures that are contrary to this spirit.”)
