On April 23 rd , an election will be held for a 4 year replacement levy for Battle Ground Public Schools. Ballots will arrive by mail the first week of April.
Battle Ground Public Schools receive most of their education funding from state and federal sources. Even though the state is constitutionally required to provide ample funding for education through a general and uniform system of public schools, state funding is not enough to provide the quality of education expected from Battle Ground students. It is necessary to ask local voters to make up the difference. The replacement levy which would begin in January 2014 will help provide funding for…
More than 90 certificated teachers which allows class sizes to remain small enough for students to benefit from personalized instruction.
Assistant principals, who provide instructional leadership, supervision of personnel and safety monitoring for all Battle Ground schools.
Classified personnel – Secretaries, media assistants and support staff
The levy also funds the $__________ budget shortfall from the state to pay for daily transportation of students.
Levy funding pays for rigorous and relevant curricular materials.
It pays some fees for students who, due to financial issues, would be unable to participate in activities such as band, jazz choir, sports and drama.
State and federal sources do not completely pay for the services required for our diverse student population. In Battle Ground Schools, all students are expected to succeed and excel socially and academically.
Battle Ground students are talented and creative. Levy funding allows them to develop those talents and become well-rounded citizens.
Reading and math interventionists provide accelerated instruction for students experiencing difficulty learning.
The levy also funds librarians and the purchases of media materials.
And programs for students learning English.
It pays for technology and upgrades which prepare our students to be 21 st century citizens.
Maintenance and custodial services
School nurses and counselors who care for students’ physical and emotional needs and assist them in planning their post-graduation opportunities.
Finally, the levy funds safety officers and safety patrol personnel, who play a crucial role in keeping our students safe.
So, how much will the levy cost?
In 2014, the projected levy rate per $1000 is $4.49. For homes valued at $200,000, the cost is $898 per year.
In 2015, the projected levy rate per $1000 is $4.52. For homes valued at $200,000, the cost is $904 per year.
In 2016, the projected levy rate per $1000 is $4.51. For homes valued at $200,000, the cost is $902 per year.
In 2017, the projected levy rate per $1000 is $4.46. For homes valued at $200,000, the cost is $892 per year.
The current levy expires in December of this year. The election on April 23 rd will allow voters to decide whether to replace that levy with a new levy which would begin in January 2014. This new levy will cost homeowners approximately $4 to $6 more per month than the current levy, depending on the value of their home.
Battle Ground Public Schools strive to be good fiscal stewards. According to Mike McAlexander, an expense reduction analyst, “The staff is to be commended for its proactive and aggressive approach to maintaining a low-cost operation.”
We accomplish this through the use of energy efficiency strategies to reduce utility costs, recycling on all campuses, auto shut downs for technology and efforts to reduce paper waste. Teachers and leaders actively seek grants for special projects.
