Follow this guide to determine what your item is worth on eBay.
So you want to sell an item on eBay but not sure how to price it. It happens all the time, you go on eBay and
search f or the item you have and see a lot of other sellers selling the same item. Should you price it the same
as theirs? Higher? Lower?
Condition is important!
Pick up the item and examine it. Are there any f laws? (For clothing) Are there any holes or stains? (For
electronics) Does it work like it is supposed to? Does it have any chips or cracks? (For antiques) Is it rusting?
Does it need to be cleaned?Knowing all this inf ormation bef orehand is very important bef ore determining the
price of the item.
Ok I have examined the item, now what?
Perf ect! Time to go on eBay and search f or the exact item you have.
For this example we will be determining the value of a used “iphone 5”.
Type “iphone 5” in the search bar at the top of the page. (Since we are selling a cell phone, go to the category
“Cell Phones & Smartphones”) You do this to narrow the search results to only show what you are interested
in.
The “Cell Phones & Smartphones” category is where you want to be. This way you will only see cell phones
2. and not cell phone cases, charges or accessories.
Now you want to narrow down the search criteria a little bit more. Below the categories section, there is a
“Condition” section.
Here you can see the condition options. Since we are selling a used
iphone 5, click the “used” checkbox. This way you will only see used
iphone 5’s.
Now if you look below this section, there will be another section called “Show Only”. You want to click the bow
that says “Sold Listings”.
The lef t side of the page should look like this now. You should have the “Cell
Phones & Smartphones” category, the “Used” condition and “Sold Listings” options
checked.
Now if you look at the items on the right, you will see that the prices of the items have changed to a green
3. color. This means these phones sold at this price.
Now you should look f or the exact phone you have. You can now add keywords to the search bar (Sprint,
Verizon, AT&T f or the carrier and maybe the storage size 16GB or 32GB) to narrow down the results. Af ter you
do this, you will get an estimate of what other people are selling their phones f or.
Quick tip: Price with the market (the average price of what the item is selling for) and price
with free shipping. Your item will probably sell faster.
Now let’s recap:
1. Determine the condition
2. Search f or the item
3. Narrow the results down by clicking its category
4. Narrow the results down more by the item’s condition
5. Add additional keywords to f ind the exact item (optional)
6. Click the “Sold Listings” under the Show only section
7. Look at what others are selling their item f or
8. Price with the market
Icing on the cake: BUYERS LOVE FREE SHIPPING
There you have it! This is what I personally do when trying to determine the price of an item I want to sell on
eBay. If you have any questions or suggestions please let me know. Also, if I am missing any steps, please
make sure to comment. I’d love to hear what you have to say.
