3. RATIONALE OF TRIBAL
The word “tribal” or Adivasi often brings to our mind a picture of half-necked men and
women, arrows and spears in their hands, feathers in their heads, and unintelligible language,
combined with myths of savagery and cannibalism. However, social knowledge of tribals is
very limited, leading us to believe many myths at the cost of their dignity. There are
approximately 100 million persons enumerated in India as members of Scheduled Tribes,
comprising of about 8% of India’s population (Source: Census India 2001). Scheduled tribal
population in Tamil Nadu is estimated 1% of the total general population. Out of these 1%
estimated tribal population of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvallur district comprises of 6% of the
Scheduled Tribes.
A majority of this population is economically deprived, socially marginalized and their
families lack resources. Hence their access to education, health care and sanitation,
employment and other income generating opportunities are very much limited.
Due to a combination of societal attitudes, varying belief systems, and governmental neglect,
tribal populations throughout India have long been denied basic healthcare. As a result, gaping
disparities in health status of tribals, when compared to metropolitan areas, are evident.
Genetic abnormalities and infectious diseases such as sickle-cell anemia, malaria, tuberculosis,
leprosy, typhoid, and cholera are rampant in areas of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil
Nadu, Orissa, and Assam states. Additionally, malnutrition, birth disorders, and stark
deficiencies have been detected in gross amounts of calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin,
and animal protein. Certain tribal groups are even facing extinction due endemic diseases and
an unusually low sex ratio. (Source: Tribal India Health Foundation)
The need of the hour for tribal development is to reduce the gap between the Tribal and Non-
Tribal population with respect to economic, educational, health care and sanitation and social
status.

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2008-2009
PREAMBLE
Rendering co-operation or assistance by the beings is justified. Every one has to love their
neighbor and naturally the human beings whether rich or poor has to depend on each other at
any cost. There is always parallel in the human communities all over the world, here we can
analyses about the economical status of the rural poor, which leads the person to determine
their status, social, political cultural and spiritual priding.
In India there are more than seventy percent of people living in rural areas; most of them are
not aquatinter with basic needs. For a big country like Inda it is suffocative and a withering
aspect. The government alone cannot fulfill all the needs of the people but the people
