6O’ you who have true faith! If one who publicly and openly commits sins brings you any news (concerning
another person) then ascertain its truthfulness carefully (before you spread it) lest you harm people
through (your own) ignorance (through accepting and following false reports) and then regret what you
have done.

4. WHAT IS A ‘FAASIQ’?
• Word Faasiq ()فاسق comes from the trilateral Arabic root “ق س ”ف meaning to “exit”
from something / somewhere – used 54 times in the Qur’an in various ways:
• Pharaoh
• Hypocrite
• Those who harm the Prophets.
• Those who give priority to their family, wealth, etc… over Allah and His religion.
• In the Qur’anic usage, it means to leave the path of truth and also a person who
performs a major sin and does not repent.
• Opposite of “ عادل ” or ‘fair and just’.

1. As believers, we MUST be those who investigate and look into issues without
passing judgment in haste. «یاّهایاذینّالآمنوا...ّنوایفتب»
2. Not all of the companions of the Prophet were noble people. «انجاءكمفاسق»
3. There is no problem in ‘exposing’ those whose habit is to spread problems in
society. «انجاءكمفاسق»
4. Societal problems stem from two sources: those working to cause problems and

5. The norm in Islam is to give people the benefit of the doubt, EXCEPT for those who
are proven to have broken this sanctity – they must be treated differently. «الذینآمنوا

6. Some people who spread rumors do so under the guise of “news” or “information”
– not rumour mongering. «جائكمفاسقبنبأ»
7. True faith does not go hand in hand with blind acceptance. «آمنوا...ّنوایفتب»
8. One MUST NOT delay when it come to ascertaining the facts. «فّنوایتب»

9. Sometimes, a fasiq may tell the truth – thus, always investigate first. «ّنوایفتب»
10. The Muslim ummah will always be faced with infiltrations to weaken us – from

11. In the model of Islamic leadership, one must always investigate before passing

12. The philosophy behind many Islamic rulings is present – we need to search out

13. One of the roles of mass-media is in spreading mis-information and thus, creating
