In this session we will learn how to architect and implement information in SharePoint and leverage concepts such as managed navigation, taxonomy, content types and search to create a highly successful SharePoint site. In this module, I will explain how to become familiar with SharePoint 2016. SharePoint 2016 is a collaboration tool at its heart. Its primary goal is to make it easy for users to find and share information, and there are many features built into SharePoint to facilitate this. SharePoint's library system feature can provide a superior alternative to the traditional file server. SharePoint lists can be an easy-to-design and easy-to-use alternative to sharing spreadsheet files or more formal database tables. Both lists and libraries can be customized and xtended to provide enhanced appearances and functionality, such as calendars and discussion boards, to name a couple. All of this collaboration can be done through a browser interface and in some cases through integration with Microsoft Office applications.

The session will address the different ways users can be authenticated in SharePoint: Active Directory, forms based authentication, claims based authentication, and anonymous access. I’ll discuss when to implement each method and what the best practices are for permission application and management. I’ll address when to use each method and when to implement other concepts like web application policies, extending web applications, laying out a decentralized security model. To abide by this best practice, I’ll discuss how the farm’s taxonomy may need to be restructured. This is where administrators need to develop and enforce a governance plan around the farm’s taxonomy. Thinking about where lists, items, and groups need to be in a SharePoint farm will ensure the right eyes are seeing the right content- and nothing more. The goal of the session is to ensure SharePoint content is secure and permissions do not get out of control. I’ll take a deep dive into what is available out of the box and what you can customize. Finally, I’ll also demonstrate how to utilize SharePoint’s auditing functionality to track who is changing permissions. The audit reports will be used to ensure the admins changing permissions are taking the correct action. When administrators know all their options around security, internal governance plans can be developed to safeguard their farm’s content.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
